With the help of Thatcham Motor Insurance Research Centre, we crashed a Mark 4 Astra to demonstrate what happens in a crash at a speed of under 30 MPH.
The doors and b pillar have been removed from one side to allow a better view of what happens inside the car as it crashes. The removal of these won't have overly affected the way the vehicle behaves.

That's reassuring. The car its self didn't deform at all. I drive one. With seatbelts on, the doors and pillar in place and airbags activated it looks quite a safe car.

We removed the doors and b pillar to give a better view of what was going on inside. To show that it isn't only the people that move around but also all the loose content within the car. Whilst the car may not be as strong the forces experienced by the dummies as the car hits a solid object would be similar to those experienced in a complete car.

Thank you for your kind comments. We hope that this video and the Peugeot crash we produced really help to get across the message that seat belts are incredibly important.

For a moment I thought this was with using seatbelts, I am happy it wasn't.

Nice stuff quite shocking really never seen this type of test in so much detail before. Good job Hampshire Fire Service. I found this video by search "Vauxhall Astra Crash Test" you were one of the top videos. Very good video.

Very good. Flawed regarding the pillars? Maybe. Still a very good breakdown. Would have been good to see all with seatbelts, because I think anyone safety conscious enough to be interested in any form of crash tests and watching this video would also be the kind who always wears their seatbelt...

Now not that I am picky but did you realise that by removing mid pole and both doors you efected structural integrity of car? Its actuall quite anoying to see "test" like this when you remove 30% of car structural support and show how terrible is to have acident. I hope you realise people does not drive around with third of they're car cut off. Otherwise its nice detailed video.

Despite their age, it are reasonable safe cars. There is a fold appearing where the windscreen is joined to the roof. Tha's because of the removal of the pillar. Also these cars normally are fitted with airbags. Airbags only do their work properly when you are wearing seat belts. You not only gat slammed against the dashboard, but also hit in the face and chest by those thing. It's almost safer to be in a car without airbags when you aren't wearing a seatbelt. So just wear the damn things....

I wanted to say this, removing the B pillar and doors on one side weakened the structural integrity of the car, but it still performed solid in this crash.

It certainly will. I know for myself that a seatbelt saved even though it was only lap belt when waist high it still saved from hitting the dashboard I did hit the back seat got two black eye. I would say I came out good as I did walk away with no pain.

Is not wearing a seat belt still a thing? When I was a kid, it was unheard of to have have rear belts, then I'd say upto mid 2000s before people on mass started using them. Now it's unthinkable to have loose children or adults in the back. front seat occupants today even if they wanted to not wear a belt, can't due to the alarm. You could permanently put the belt on and sit on it, but why bother?
