VINTAGE BROADHEAD TEST: SATELLITE 3 BLADE

This is a test of the old 134 gr Satellite 3 blade.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 18 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 11.4 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.45" = 6.86 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.45” = 6.86 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 17.5 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 136 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts + Bonus & Edge Retention (9%, +106 grams = 7.88/10 = 7.1 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 18.7 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (9" = 10 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 61 layers= 8.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 16.7 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (7/10 = 3.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (4/10 = 1.2 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.

TOTAL SCORE: 82.94 pts = 8 Golden Arrows

Thank you so much for sharing that. That really means a lot. I’m really bummed that I can’t shoot now due to my back surgery. And I heard I might have another back surgery coming up, that’s even more invasive. But, I have a friend coming over in a few minutes to do, the shooting test for me with my bow and arrow. I’m really grateful for his help, so I can get more videos up.

i can confirm that they are VERY sharp. when i was a little kid these are the first heads i ever bought for myself with my own money. it was over 40 years ago and i still to this day have scars on my thumb and finger from assembling them the day they came in the mail.

This broadhead sure brings back some memories! I started off my bowhunting career with the 4 blade version of these. I was not at all surprised by the sharpness results, as I learned the valuable lesson and the importance of using a broadhead wrench when tightening broadheads! A little slip while tightening one with my bare hand and I was leaving an impressive blood trail!

Thanks. I can usually find them in the grass pretty easily, because the grass is so thin. But they do fly pretty far sometimes. It’s a lot better than what I did in Iowa, when I shot it into concrete in my basement. I had some pieces stick in the wall.

Can probably find model cheaper then modern models on e-bay if you live in North America or if not wanting to hunt around, buy NAP Thunderhead using in the 125 setup and use behind broadhead 2 of the 5 grain 3 Rivers brass washers that come in 12 or 100 packs.

Yep, I killed my first and several other deer with that exact broad head back in the early/mid 80's. Those thin razor blades were very sharp and did a deadly job on deer when attached to an 31" Easton XX78 2114 aluminum shaft with 5"vanes, zipping through the air at blistering 230 FPS

oh cool, i was wondering if you would have ever done a vintage broadhead review, i would like to see some of Zwikey delta or eskimo review, i've used them a lot and i'm very curious to know how they perform

Problem is John Lusk does not sharpen any beforehand so he would have very dull heads since Zwickey only has heads where a proper bevel is set so you know angle you need for sharpening.

They made these with up to 6 bladed. That is a lot of cutting surface. Hornet was the other company that made these. Long blades had more pronounced cuts. When they passed through...it left a whole.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures you do a great summary. On everything you test.i have never heard of the bishop arrows until you. I was just curious as the vein lenght, arrow weight, and i hear you say you use a fad elimanator and one other style. I really would like to get a close up look at those. And maybe where you order them from. They really look like tough arrows.i to hunt with a compound and a crossbow. So i have to have bolts and arrows. Anyway. Thanks for all you do and if you ever get a chance to do some close ups on those I'll defintly be watching. Thanks john. Keep up the good work sir. These videos are very very helpful.

Just a suggestion, for broadheads that come apart to replace blades or mechanicals, can you show us how to replace the blades/put them together/set the mechanical? Would be interesting to see how a lot of these are made and the process behind how well they are built and hold together.

Thank you for that suggestion. I have thought about doing that and I may in the future. But as it is, I get a lot of complaints about the talking portion of the video. Some people just want to see the shooting. It’s hard to please everybody. I do include in the rating for sharpness or replace, a variable of how difficult it is to replace the blades. Some are much more difficult than others. And in that case, get they get docked a little bit.

But back in day (from my bother owning some 125 and 125/110 Lighting models) you could buy replaceable fin blades like a number of these brands and brands like Satellite and Lighting packs came with some replaceable blades into the 1990s for lightning, now 125/110 grain Lighting is basically a NAP thunderhead 125/105 grain, where 3 Rivers is calling a 125/100 grain broadhead even when reviews have people complaining about 5 grains and 5 grains is less then a USA or Candian dime.

Modern NAP Thunderheads are as close to old Lighting 2 where 110/125 grain models and version 2 on 125/105 grain Satellite 3 blade models and are a 125/105 grain model as some people want newer heads in a model hey no longer have to track down Of Course I got some old Lighting 125 at a garage sale for my brother and on e-Bay some lighting 2 where package copyright is very early 1990's for renewal and an 1986 copyright before that. I Even have 1 serrated set with copyright 1980s came with Lighting 2. Now for a 3 blade 135 grain is impossible to find new in any model outside a Zwickey 2 or 2 blade with bleaders where in sharpening as all come with no blade only a dull bevel for angle, often in sharpening drop to 130--125 grains so what people do is they buy Modern Nap Thunderheads and use 2 of the 3 Rivers 5 grain Brass washers for a 135 grain head as tracking down old heads is expensive and/or time consuming on e-Bay and similar places.

Yes, I saw that, was probably a pre-threaded end going into metal tip used so manufacture was easier and could be made cheaper using a 2 piece aluminum ferrule.
