The host asked how the word "gumbo" came from okra. In several Bantu languages of West Africa, okra is "ki-ngombo" or similar. That word is probably where the name of gumbo comes from. In some dialects of Spanish, a similar word (quingombó, guingambó, etc.) is still the most common name for okra. The word "okra", by the way, is also an African word, but from a different West African language (probably an Igbo language).
