Im sad that the old trees got cut down with no reguard for their age. This makes my heart happy to see the other trees saved and rehomed. Never seen one of those giant spade trucks only learned about them in college. I bet they are awesome in person. Pretty. Amazing how they can move such huge trees without killing them. Thank you for showing this process. My heart is happy

Stumbled across this video and brought back some good memories. I lived about 3 blocks west of the arcadia neighborhood in the 80's. Our neighborhood was about 1 sq. mile of these trees. If you didn't get them trimmed every year, the dates would make one helluva mess on the ground.

I am surprised that the neighborhood or city or some historic committee are not protecting these trees. These are what make the neighborhood special. I use to live in Chicago and there is an area that if you move in you can not cut down the oak trees there since they are special to the neighborhood and has been there for 100+ years. In California too, my brother has a 75 year old California Oak and he can't touch it, he can trim it but he has to let the city know how and by whom, but he can't just cut it down.

I've heard of a thing called basal crown rot. The idea here is if the base of the tree is covered with mulch or dirt then that will cause the base to rot and it will kill the tree. Seems like that put the palm too deep.

Nice video! Were the houses in this Black Sphinx Date palm neighborhood build in a Date palm grove? The grid of the Date palms seems interrupted by the houses that are present today. Was just one tree relocated, or a couple of them?
@rejeandurette3471
@rejeandurette3471 7 жыл бұрын
It was originally a date grove, planted mostly in the 1940s, and the subdivision was laid out in 1955 if I am correct. They attempted to preserve as many trees as possible. lining the streets around the rows of trees, but of course many of them were taken out to put homes in. The original black sphinx seedling was likely discovered in 1928, and it would have taken a few decades to generate enough offshoots to plant the entire grove. Most of the trees would be around 75 years old, not quite as old as Jake believes them to be.
@luca_rr4660
@luca_rr4660 7 жыл бұрын
Okay thank you. So not all trees are from 1917? Still a nice history though. You see these subdivision for building plans also a lot in olive groves in Europe, they just dig out the olive trees (some 100+ years) and sell them, to let them rot away in a few years in a not ideal to wet and to cold climate.

I remember when I was little seeing a palm tree... We don't have them in the NYC metro, obviously. So when I first saw a palm I was intrigued by it. I went over and stuck my hands in the fronds and moved something somehow... All I remember was about 25,000 giant cockroaches scattering in every direction and it absolutely freaked me the hell out. I had never seen so many insects, and I had never seen a cockroach, either. Instinctively I hated the disgusting pieces of shit. They're probably the world's most disgusting creature. They're just awful. They move so fast. They get so large. They have no weapons, like no stingers or claws or bite or anything... their survival strategy is to literally gross everything else out. So.. to this day I worry that palms and cockroaches always go together. Is it common to see roaches infesting palms? Do most palms have this problem? My mother grew up in a part of the US with palms everywhere, and she always told me that was one of the main downsides to palms--they host awful insects and rats. Because a palm isn't a naturally self-cleaning tree like most I'm familiar with. Palms don't lose their leaves, or fronds, they just wilt and flop down and form that dry dead 'skirt' of old fronds that sticks to palms forever... or until an extremely strong wind rips them off or we prune them. These dead fronds host bacteria, mold, fungus, because they just sit there dead, but sucking up moisture from any humidity or morning fog... it's just a damp disgusting haven for bugs. Anyone have palms that are completely free of insects? If so, is this because you have to constantly prune the damn thing? This is why trees in the NYC area are nice. They all take care of themselves. They just don't attract bugs, and because we have a substantial winter, bugs never get to completely take over any area before they all die around September or October. That's another downside to the 'Sun and Fun And Palm trees of Cali and Florida... the bugs!!
