Hi. I kept a female veiled that we had for 5 years. We kept her totally free range... Kept her in a small room and had a UV on for 12 hpd aimed at her fav spot on the house tree. Took her outside a lot and cut her diet low once she got big... As far as water, I had a climb for her in the shower and she'd chill in there with me. I never had any problems with her. She got gravid once but she either laid them or reabsorbed them. That's what the vet said. Awesome tempered creature and we hung out a lot.

Very informative and helpful to anyone thinking about raising a chameleon. They are a creature that requires proper handling, nutrition, and environment. Any major change can cause them to go from healthy to sick within a few days. My daughter showed up one day with him for my birthday about 3 years ago. I was definitely not prepared for a male baby Veiled Chameleon. After wondering if he was gonna make it more than 3 times during our first 2 years together, and the thousands of dollars spent on live insects, fruits, veggies, supplies, & habitat materials... you begin to understand how fragile they really are. Freds now a big, beautiful, cone-headed boy that loves soaking up the afternoon rays of sunshine in a window. It took us a couple of years to figure each other out. Patience & care are a must. 🙂

Hello Bill, I'm trying to get down the misting routing for my Juvenile Female Veiled Chameleon. I have a mister that goes up to 120 seconds of a mist duration. I understand the reasoning behind misting before you turn your lights on, and after you turn them off. However, in doing this, how long do you think should I be misting each time? I've been having issues with water pooling in the substrate bin (It's bare. No substrate or anything in the bin. So it just collects water). I know everyones situation is different but I'd like to hear a general starting point from you. if possible. Thank you!

Hi Bill, 👋🏾 I haven't been a Chameleon keeper in a long time but my interest has never waned over time. I'm just building and growing my education on chameleon husbandry, so when the time comes I'll be skilled and equipped to care for its every need. I think a lot about chameleon husbandry and I think about expanding the parameters of successful chameleon keeping. I was wondering what you and the other members of your group have to say about this. It's no doubt that good ventilation is paramount for heathly keeping, but what about actual windflow of varying temperature gradients and directions. I also think about overcast. Should we simulate overcast as a prequel to rain and general early morning overcast which the basking light can beam out from? I believe this will have a great result on mood and behavior. Lastly and most of all not least. How about implementing sounds. Thunder could come in as a raining overcast is short to fall. The distant or faint call of birds and other wildlife. I understand that these sounds may cause some stress but it could also stimulate behavior unseen in captivity as well in triggering survival instincts. These ideas in the prospect of creating a living atmosphere came to me as I spend so much time outside in the natural world. All of these atmospheric additions and conditions definitely need more expansion per the chameleon a person keeps and their habitat of origin. I'm so glad that you also agree on a larger sized enclosure than what is readily available, and that you encourage hobbyists to build their own cages. I've also thought about a preliminary light source that gradually brightens from first light to sunrise. So that the beaming of a light being turned on wouldn't be so harsh. Because we all know how much of a rude awakening it is when we're sleeping and someone turns on a bright light. The only question I have is, should fog roll in at the substrate level or fall from above? Does it make a difference in humidity or chameleon behavior/mood? what kind of misters do you have? My chameleon has just bad humidity in his terrarium.. its about 35% on average and i just need to have him hydrated while im in school or doing some other stuff, could you tell me some of your reccomendation or something please?

Talking about the humidity levels, my humidity is constantly at a 49 or so, do I have to mist the habitat until it reaches 80%?

One question if anybody can answer it i'll be very tankful. I'm building my screen enclosure and i have a doubt about the lightning. I will put real plants in the cage and i want to know if a basking lamp and a uvb lamp is enough or should i put other lamps too. And than another question,should all lights be on for 12 hours a day? i live in malaysia. my rooms ambient temp is about 24-26 degree celcius and my rooms humidity level is 75-80 in daytime. So i can definetly use a screen cage right????

That’s because mounts of Yemen have Mediterranean climate other have tropical rainforest mountain climate or high plateau upon savanna or desert Africa . Mediterranean have the ripe loccalityspecies and all similar climate are preferable that’s why we have unique species in S Africa coast and near plateau mountains. All good🙏🏽
