This is the extremely rare UK TV special "The Beach Boys in London" from 1966. Filmed by Peter Whitehead, director of many 1960s music videos in England.
More of this footage was released officially in 2006 on DVD but the footage was silent, often repeated, played backward or sped up. Whitehead shot that footage for this TV special.
As far as I know, this TV special only aired once on British television.
I have done a quick correction of this special which I have had in my collection for almost 20 years.
This will get flagged for copyright for sure, but it does fall within "fair use" for showing how old, faded film footage can be quickly restored for better viewing.

@@notanotherjamesmurphy5574I think it was Brian who once said (and I believe it to my core) "you can't force creativity".. And Capitol was simply the worst record label for anyone with a creative mind---forcing bands to put out THREE albums a year with a tour to support each album! Who has time to be creative with that kind of schedule? It worked for Brian from 1964-67--but he got burned out from touring to focus on producing albums, but the pressure to even produce became too much to bear to the point where he became burned out from being creative altogether!

I have been a big fan for decades, collecting all their music and even creating a setlist archive website, have been to 60+ shows, and this is the first I've seen of this documentary! The part with Dennis and Al shopping is fascinating! Also the backstage banter. And crazed fans rushing the stage only to be forcibly removed! Thank you for posting this!

@@impalaman9707 I mean, he was the Love Man after all!😉 Seriously, he absolutely looked a lot older than his age at that time. He was in his early 20s and they were in their late teens probably. The ladies were definitely models and were taller in their heels than the Boys! London was swinging to be sure.

What a rare and enjoyable glimpse into the Beach Boys touring and experience and fan's reception in England in 1966. Great to see them going into stores, shopping, etc. Brian was back home, but his music was at such a peak that year that the Boys represented to their solid fan base in England (and the world). Songs like "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Sloop John B", "Caroline, No", etc. This was a beautiful time piece. Rare, but now available through KZfaq.

"Wouldn't it Be Nice"--to actually hear the live performances shown in this film. On the back covers for the albums "All Summer Long" and "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)", the boys each wrote something for the liner notes, and Al was the one who wrote about how hard the work of a musician is. It's interesting to see the backstage footage and see him hard at work preparing for the concert while the others were doing other things. It's sad to see Carl smoking at about the 6:29 mark, knowing that the habit eventually killed him; and what's Dennis smoking just before that?
@impalaman9707

Agree. To see Carl insert that cigarette into his sweet babyface almost made me wanna cry! As for Al, he worked hard at being just a rhythm guitarist, and his Fender guitar sounded great. Too bad he was never allowed to play lead--oh well, always a bridesmaid--never a bride!

Thanks for the efforts of restoring this and sharing it. Very enjoyable! I guess we should count our lucky stars that the TV network didn't wipe the recordings and reuse the video as was a common practice in the 50s/60s. One of my first album purchases was a Beach Boys compilation on 8-track tape which had mostly their car songs and a few beach ones on it. I think it was just called "The Beach Boys" and it was in a bargain bin at K-Mart so I could afford it! To this day, "409" is probably the only song I can sing completely unaccompanied through. I have that strange trait of remembering lyrics when the song is playing but forgetting them otherwise. That's why I marvel at people who can recite poetry from memory! I didn't realize it was that that far along in their career before the Beach Boys broke in the UK. But once they made it, the fans became fans for life and they seemed to do better in the UK when their US album releases were barely getting into the Top 200 in the late 60s/early 70s. I also remember how well the concerts with Brian doing "Pet Sounds" or "Smile" were received over there a couple decades on. The UK also treated some lesser known bands like Love with a lot more respect and popularity than they could muster outside of LA here in the US. I saw this a bit more than a month after Brian Wilson shared the sad news of his wife, Melinda's, passing. I hope he has a safe harbor of his own now that's she's gone. He does have his children, but she was such a strong support for him in these past decades. Love and Mercy to you Brian and family and I'm still missing Carl & Dennis forever!

Fantastic footage! When they play the Pet Sounds tracks you can hear that they are from a UK copy of the album with the terrible duophonic or duophonic folded back down to mono sound. Marianne F. probably got the narration job because the BB uk publisher was Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate company, and he also managed her.

Watching them reminds me of a quote from my late voice teacher: "Something for everybody." Despite the papers focusing on Dennis, ALL the boys were attractive. Each one had different features that appealed to different gals, as you could tell by the way everyone got stormed on stage. 🙂 I agree with everyone about how cringeworthy it was to see Carl put that cancer stick into his babyfaced mouth; likewise when Dennis smoked. Mike Love looked ridiculous with that huge pipe, trying to be cool. The sequence with Al and Dennis in the antique shop was adorable. We got to watch two childhood friends goofing around, which we didn't get to see often enough. I was impressed with Al going through the chords of "God Only Knows" on his Strat before the concert. Even though he'd been playing rhythm guitar for several years, you could see that he still felt insecure about it (his first instrument with the group was upright bass). What's amazing is how little Al has changed over the years; he still looks and sounds the same.

It frustrates me how unproactive everyone in this band other than Brian was. Why were they still wearing those stupid shirts in 1966? Why did they have to wait to be laughed off stage before they ditched them? Why didn't they encourage and/or help Brian (a very easily-coerced person) to finish SMiLE? They were all so behind the eight ball!
@boomerrocksUSA
@boomerrocksUSA Жыл бұрын
first sentence:huh? is that supposed to make sense? second sentence: This was their first tour of Britain in 1966 and they were still associated with look by British fans. Not sure they were ever laughed off the stage anywhere. third sentence: Because the Beach Boys were out touring to make a living and no time to babysit Brain. Besides by the time he did "Smile" Brian was falling into deep depression and psychosis. He literally heard voices in his head. Brian is technically on "the spectrum" with either Autism or Aspberger's syndrome. He exhibits all the common signs of both conditions - talks out of the side of his mouth, an extraordinary, almost super human talent or skill, very socially awkward, doesn't cope well with change or confrontation and gets anxious very easily.
