Veterinarians are not paid nearly enough for the debt we go into.

The school is extremely hard to get in and graduate even with the costs. Literally same with medical school. Human doctors earn much more than us.

But insurance makes it such that many people are disconnected from the cost of their care. Vetmed is a cash business and there is far more transparency when it comes to fees. It is better for the customer, but it makes it much harder for us to charge appropriately and be paid according to what we provide as an essential service.

@@worrell3831 yes, exactly. I love being practitioner veterinarian but some of my days I’m considering my career because of the money problems between us and clients. It hurts me the most when we have to make euthanasia even though the patient has curable disease just because the owner can’t afford the treatment.

Not anymore I went to a place that wanted to charge me 14,000 for my dogs surgery but another place I went to after gave me 3,000 its a huge difference in prices.

Plus most of these insurances want you to pay upfront then they decide if they want to compensate you back. It’s also hard if you’re dog doesn’t have perfect health

Peanuts story dog This hasn’t helped at all. My 8 & 1/2 year old miniature poodle went from normal self to not walking at all and laying all day on her side in bed. She needs help for everything but can drink water and eat. I’ve switched her to organic soft food, and joint support treats as well as antibiotics, steroids, and valley fever meds after they failed to tell me she had slight signs of it. Until watching her get worse for a week to 2 weeks from walking to not at all. Idk what to do to help her she’s been on the meds about 2-3 weeks now and little to no improvement they said it could be a multi neurological disorder they don’t know have suggested a 4k spinal tap and MRI for further diagnoses. I don’t have these funds and see no improvement but she’s all there cognitively, her hind leg goes stiff and one she’s been curling up and can straighten the front ones don’t seem to support her, she’s slightly standing now but collapses if I let go. She’s had 4 chiropractor adjustments and nothing has helped. Please if anyone has seen this before and has any ideas to get life back in her please help. I feel terrible for her and she’s all there otherwise. Its hand and foot with her and I don’t know what to do. Help 🙏

Idk if this is factual. Reason being is there are different vets maybe 20mikes a part that charge different prices for the same procedure
@blueduck8876

Sometimes thats because there are differences.. one vet may have a specialty and more experience.. also one clinic could be including more for the procedure than the other. For example, pain medication and inflammatory medications during/after or using anesthesia versus sedation. Perhaps one office is using more advanced or just plain more medical equipment. I have seen many cases where the cost is higher because the pet is made much more comfortable during and after the procedure or on the flip its lower cost because the office is limited on their equipment and using old outdated stuff. Most often there are reasons why there is variance in cost even if the clinics are in close proximity.

Because one is probably cutting corners when it comes to care. I have seen this happen in my area in FL. You go to low cost and high volume places, you get what you pay for. I have also seen corporate owned clinics 15 mins from each other with one having nearly 3x high fees. This was because one was in a more affluent part of town and another was in a more middle class area.

That doesn’t disqualify that veterinary medicine is still extremely fucking expensive. Sure I may have to pay a cheaper amount, however, surgeries and things like that no person has $8000 to just throw on an animal

I dont think her point was that vet care isn't expensive. She seems to be aware that it is. She was trying to offer perspective. Her point was basically that medical care in general is expensive both human and pet (human much more so), but most people have insurance to offset the cost so they don't always consider the true cost. Pet insurance is out there too. Unfortunately a possible surgery is part of owning a pet. I agree its scary to get a bill like that and it puts the owner and the vet in a predicament. A lot of times vets will do all they can to reduce cost or work out a plan if an animal is in dire straits.

Yes, specialists earn more, but A lot of human GPs earn more than veterinary specialists. That is the reality for us, despite specialists having to go through the same hoops of human specialists.

A GP human doctor makes the same as a vet specialist, no matter the area they go into.

@@rhiannn3416true, but vet specialists still make a lot of money even if it isn't as much as a human doctor. It's certainly enough for me, and the rest of the "pay" would be fulfillment in my eyes.

Yes... in most situations. Unfortunately a lot of our job is talking about money because money is the biggest barrier to gold standard treatment. We always want to offer the gold standard but unfortunately most of the time we can't.

Practicing veterinary medicine without a license is a criminal offense. This gives veterinarians the ability to extort people over the pain and suffering of their pets. Karma will get these unethical scumbags eventually.

I dont think this applies to most vets.. I know a lot of great vets who do everything they can to get a pet the care they need even if it means sacrificing some or all of their cost
