A lawyer was savagely mauled in the Arctic, and we went back with him to investigate why climate change is causing more polar bears to attack humans.
Matthew Dyer, 47, was savagely mauled by a polar bear in the Arctic, while on a Sierra Club hiking trip. VICE and InsideClimate News returned with him to one of the wildest regions in the world-Canada's Torngat Mountains, where 10% of the world's polar bears live-to investigate why climate change is causing more polar bears to attack humans.
Find out more about Dyer's epic story on VICE: bit.ly/polar-bear-man-full-length-

Dillon Crampton that’s anywhere. Going out into the bush without a gun period is stupid. You never know what’s going to happen and a gun could be the difference between surviving and starving to death. Hell even in NW Calgary in the 90s you couldn’t walk your dog past a certain time at night because wild coyotes were so common in our neighborhood.

I just want to point out that polar bears have always "come onto land" in the summer. Bears hunt seals in the fall and spring just before the ice breaks up, the times seals are most accessible to terrestrial creatures (living things that live on LAND) . During the summer they eat fish, caribou, moose, other bears, berries, and anything else they can scavenge.

20 years ago, we hiked through Ayayutuk national park, a little further north on Baffin island, near Pangnirtung. I remember very clearly having a required morning lecture where they explained all the safety protocols, and made it clear that this was the bear's land and we we visitors. No one would be brought in to kill the bear if one was spotted, but we might be airlifted out to allow a bear to pass. The land demands respect, the bears require respect, and we must tread in their space with humility, especially now that so much has changed. Huge respect to the wisdom of the guides, and their deep knowledge of the land.

Well, when city slickers go out into the wild shit happens. Since the polar bear population has increased from 5.000 to 30.000 in a couple of decades it’s natural for them to seek food among men. It’s not because of “climate change” they are living closer to humans, it’s because they’re thriving and will continue to do so until they are hunted in larger numbers.

I lived in Alaska for a while. We never dealt with polar bears because of the lower latitude, but grizzly bears often came around my home and usually I would just shoot blanks at them to scare them away 99% of the time, but there was one time were I was splitting wood and a bear came out of nowhere and lunged at me, I always had a .45 on my belt when I was outside for obvious reasons, but I was very reluctant to use it because the Bears don't recognize people as 'alpha Predators' because that's what they are! They either see us as food or as a threat and neither of those is their fault. Not to mention how beautiful and powerful they are. I stood my ground and slowly backed away but it moved faster and faster towards me, eventually I was cornered and had no choice but I use the blunt size of my axe and hit her on top of the head, not too hard but just enough to either piss her off or make her run away, off she went!

@@Semperidem94 I think that when you said "That is if you are speaking the truth." , you were saying what most people are thinking as well. So this person was splitting wood and had a Grizzly Bear "lunge" at them, and although they usually would shoot blanks at the bears, even though they stated they ALWAYS had a .45 on their belt (guess they carried a different gun that was loaded with blanks AND their .45), when the bear moved faster towards him, he decided to hit the bear on the top of the head with the blunt side of his axe.....BUT NOT TOO HARD............LOL, AHAHAHAHHA, hang on, me and everyone reading this with me are pissing their pants and choking on their food. I noticed the bear guard, Maria, is armed with only a .243 caliber rifle. That's a marginal deer caliber at best, certainly nothing I would use for protection against an animal the size of a polar bear. I understand her stature and the light recoil of the .243 have something to do with it (and that she has back-up) but it's just an observation. I would say a 30-06 at a minimum, with the .300, .338 or .375 being more ideal. Anyway, nice video. Matthew Dyer comes off as a genuine, funny and positive guy.
@ChakibTsouli
@ChakibTsouli 9 жыл бұрын
You didn't have to be that guy. But I don't think she would kill the bear if he charges at her, they numbers are slimming everyday because of us. those rounds are probably used to neutralize him, a shot of those won't kill the bear, but would definitely be painful enough to scare him.
@machbaby
@machbaby 9 жыл бұрын
Chakib Tsouli I'm not sure what you mean by "that guy", but just trying to point out a bit of logic. You shoot a (dangerous) charging polar bear to kill it, hopefully, in a humane manner. They use the "bear bangers" or flare pistols for the scare tactics. I know these bear guards do everything possible to avoid any conflict with these animals - as I would. I'm certainly not advocating the killing of polar bears, but you need the right tool if ever placed in that position. Regards.

I just read the description- who the hell goes camping where 10% of the earth's polar bears live? Oh, ok, they just said the bears are also about starving. What could possibly go wrong

Well it's really no different than people traveling into warzones or places where their nationality is hated or just considered to be a pinata.

This is an old comment but no the bears aren’t starving the vast majority are very healthy because of the seal population being in the millions around this coast

Lol that's what I was thinking.. that would just piss them off. It's almost cruel to shoot such a large animal with that caliber.

While that is true, we must remember that more power doesn't necessarily always mean a kill. Proper placement is key. And if she can fire her .243 effectively and accurately, well then she is in better shoes then either you or I.

I'm not saying that it's ok to have a small caliber rifle but. Up here in Alaska a young eskimo boy hunting by himself came across a polar bear with only his .223. Good thing he knew how to use it and shot it multiple times in the head and killed it.

I have done a lot of crazy things and have spent a lot of time in bear country but there is no way I am camping in polar bear country without packing a high powered rifle and taken turns on watch. This place looks beautiful. I wonder if you can hire a armed guide when in the park. Polar bears are nothing to mess with.

This isn’t true the reason for such high number of bear encounters is because of the ever increasing protection of the polar bear, the populations have exploded and the indigenous peoples are no longer able to keep them under control. The high population numbers have also resulted in the spread of disease and food shortage amongst the polar bears. The best thing we can do is let the indigenous peoples do what they have been doing successfully for thousands of years

In my opinion them bringing a .243 Winchester rifle to protect from Polar bears wasn't a large enough caliber. If I remember right .243 is designed for 80 to 140 ish pound game for hunting. Im sure even a malnourished polar bear would have to be minimum 500 pounds plus. I would think 300 win mag round minimum probably even larger. Very good story and Gianna is quite beautiful. Always have to be extra careful out in nature as Nature is always a cruel mistress.

30-06 is standard measure up here on Svalbard. Some people use shotguns with solid slugs, but they're not really recommended. Nobody uses single shot rifles, that's just asking for trouble. Minimum 4 round capacity. If you're camping you never just rely on the fence, I've heard too many stories of bears getting through them. You want dogs and if you ain't got them, you guard shift through the night. These idiots were asking for trouble. "Camp as far from the water as possible" so they go like 10 meters? They only had 5 rounds between them lol They were damn lucky they weren't all eaten.

This is why you always have your .44 magnum and either a .308 or 30-06 or a 12 gauge or 45-70 etc, etc. Some kids up the road walked into their kitchen an found a black bear digging around in the fridge the other day. I had a family friend who had a bear in their garage and another friend had to shoot a bear when it charged a customer at his motel. Also, you should be more scared of moose and coyotes.

All of these people bringing up political bullshit and I'm just sitting here in awe admiring a man who survived the impossible and a man who showed rare resilience and courage to fight for his life after having his head in the mouth of a bear. Why do people always have to make the story about themselves by bringing up stupid shit? Just listen to this man's story and learn something from it, whatever that may be.
