Victorinox... Leatherman... who doesn't know the brands. The big names in the EDC and multitool world.
However... which is the best? Today we compare a similar type of multitools from both brands to see which we think is the best. Of course we focus on outdoor use and not on your typical EDC... i mean... this is DUTCH BUSHCRAFT KNIVES for god sake!

Hi my dutch friends! Greetings from Germany! After using the mid sized and the XL version of the (original) first Leatherman back in the 1980's for about eight years, I purchased the exact Victorinox Swiss Tool you are testing in your video. I now have it for 30 years, and am using it ever since. As a live musician and Motorbike rider I just have beatenthe living shit out of it, and more often than not. The only thing that ever happened to the Swiss Tool: I damaged the chissel by using it as a screwdriver (yes it was dark and I was drunk), but was able to fix this on a cheap waterstone, and the leather sheet or butter, the belt loop of the sheet broke after 25 years of carrying it. I bought a second one, to have a spare, but never needed it, always use the first one. Pro tip: use the back of the saw for fatwood scratching and use of the firesteel. The back is real sharp. Love your videos! Keep on doing what you do.

The last time I was looking for a new multitool, the main thing I looked at was the scissor. I may be a weirdo, but that tends to be the tool I use most. The simple fact is that no one has exactly the same needs, so you always have to stop and think about what is best for yourself.

@@JordanMac79 The Surge is absolutely insane. It built my bedroom. I use it for computer repair. You can also use t-shank jigsaw blades with it, though it's best if you use a drill press to punch a hole in the shank. I've used brad point and drill bits with the ratcheting tool. It's not even the most expensive Leatherman but imo it is head and shoulders above the rest in versatility.

I think Swiss Tool would be more comparable to Leatherman's Super Tool 300, but it's still amazing how well they both handled bushcrafting tasks. I'm still going to carry around a fixed blade in addition to my multitool. Can you please review the Glock Feldmesser (either 78 or 81)? I know you don't like 1095, but it's a rather affordable and very sturdy bayonet and I heard it might stop being produced soon.

I have had both the Victorinox Swisstool and the Swisstool Spirit X. In the end I kept the Spirit X because it fits in my watch pocket of my jeans and has rounded edges making it more comfortable to use. They both have the same features except for the Swisstool having a ruler and having the jaws of pliers being able to open up a bit wider. Also you can apply more force because of size with the Swisstool. But the compactness of the Swisstool Spirit X won it for me. I like the 'hardness' of the tools being exactly right (for me): the tools do not break but bend when applying too much force and can be bent back while still being able to keep an edge. Also rust resistance is great: using it in and around the sea does not immediately cause rust. You still need to rinse it after use with sea water and sometimes apply a drop of oil is recommended. Making fire with fire steel using the saw blade works great. Most used tool in my life. Have many great blades but since society frowns upon having a knife hanging from your belt this has been with me for the past years and worked great. And the best knife is the one you have with you and not the one laying in a drawer at home.... Still use Victorinox Outrider with my own fire steel and torch attachment when bush crafting in Norway. Also prefer small knife and a saw in the out doors... Just more weight and labor efficient compared to carrying a big knife. A small Gransfors axe also sometimes comes along just because the big knives do not appeal to me. Have used samekniv (leuku) but a Gransfors axe is far more efficient for building shelters. Cleaning fish (even big ones) is a bit of hassle with a samekniv so you also need a small knife.

@@folksurvival The scissors on the Spirit is less useful for cutting wrapping paper (and have cut a lot with it) but it is great at cutting metal sheet, paracord, band aid, bandages, nails, rope (that fits in the jaw, etc). I have carried both full size and Spirit around and in the end the Spirit X won: in the field I am usually not cutting wrapping paper and plastic sheets, mylar etc is no problem. (long time having them both on my belt: swiss tool to borrow to others, spirit for myself).

Great review, you guys did things with a multi tool I wouldn't do, but now I know, so thanks. For me the signal is the overall winner, one tool that does all around camp, especially the hammer makes it the winner (it works, but lacks some comfort). For processing wood I use and axe the only role that my signal has in the process is the can opener to hold the wood stable, to keep my fingers away from the business end of my axe.

Awesome video boys! In my opinion multitools are great for urban use and as a backup in the woods, just to be prepared. A nice fixed blade often does the job better but a multitool is a bit more allround. As a student, I like it to keep a leatherman rebar in my pack for all kind of situations in which you need a knife/saw/screwdriver. That said, pliers also are often very handy!

Had a vicrotinox for many years. I never had any real complaints until I was gifted a surge. The vixtorinox is definitely the more refined product, but the surge is unbeatable if you're looking for a no nonsense hard use multi tool. You would be hard pressed to find anyone anywhere that uses their multi tool harder or more frequently than I do (pipeline contractor that averages around 70 hours at work a week), and there is no way my victorinox would have held up the way my surge has. It's easily the toughest and most diverse multi tool on the market.

Dealing with appliances and electrical devices. So many things. Victorinox was advertised in the US as like the boy scout Swiss Army Knife that all kids would want at camping trips. But I have a preference toward my Leatherman wave. It always comes in handy for most useful tasks in a pinch away from the Bushcraft scene. I could even use it for some survival tasks should that ever but hopefully not happen since I been using it for over 20 years. When I compare the two companies the generalizations I have always come to are - (my opinion from my use in both the forest service industry, ranch work, camping, hunting, hiking, daily EDC) Comparison is between Leatherman Supertool / Rebar/ Micra and Wave vs Swiss Tool and Swiss Spirit Tool Fit and Finish - Hands down Victorinox wins- They are just more comfortable long term use. The Leatherman Rebar and Super tool tends to cause hot spots when the file comes out while applying torque on the pliers. Victorinox is just engineered cleaner and nicer and Leathermans have a tendency to have more than one tool come out while Victorinox for me at least is easier to remove the tools. Warranty - The same, Ive used both warranties and had the same experience. Broke a Swisstool and broke a Wave and got replacements in about 6 weeks without questions asked. Scissors - Hands down Victorinox knocks it out of the park. Leatherman scissors are garbage, its not even close. Pliers- Leatherman takes the win because of how many models have replaceable 154cm cutters (Surge, Wave, Signal, Supertool, Rebar etc) File - Win goes to Victorinox - the file pattern is cleaner and seems to resist marring long term. Saw - The 111-130mm larger Swiss Army Knives are KINGS of the saw, Nice long saws with sharp spines but the Swiss Tool eh.... I think its tie with the saws with the Victorinox Plier based tools and Leathermans Blades - Leatherman wins here just because while I prefer the style of the drop point pen of the Victorinox they use a softer steel and even 420HC is better than Victorinox in my opinion Awl - Leatherman wins slightly in my experience I have bent a Victorinox Awl and have abused and abused my Supertools awl. Screw Drivers / Torque tools - Leatherman wins here just because their bit kit system on their Wave/ Skeletool is nice and their screwdrivers seem to handle torque without warping better ( I stripped the Swisstools phillips head) Leatherman also has better after market extensions, ratchets and a variety of 2 d bits. Kind of wonky though so maybe thats not a pro. Long Term Use - I give the edge slightly to Victorinox only because I have two models that I have used the longest the Leatherman Supertool and the Victorinox Swiss Tool and the use (a few years each as work tools on my work belt - forest service work) The leatherman gets "looser" over time than the Victorinox. I really do not see a significant advantage over each other and I ultimately end up finding myself carrying two tools the Supertool 300 or the Rebar and either a Victorinox Compact or SD Classic because the scissors and the scale tools are nice or I just use the Swisstool haha ... Its good to have options and swap for longevity.

Thanks for your helpful insights. I have a Leatherman Charge TTi and a Surge, but I’ve never tried the Vic. Swiss Tool or Spirit X. For weddings and festive occasions, a classic leatherman is worn in a leather case and with it a zippo also in a leather case. and for picnics and regular days, something more robust and slightly larger is desirable due to greater usability. So I recommend everyone to buy the most robust model in stainless steel version regardless of the manufacturer unless they have small fists.

Victorinox gang. I bought my Victorinox multitool from a random guy who wanted to sell it to me for 40$. I dunno if he stole it or really wanted some crack money, but I was so broke at a time and only had my last 10$ till payday. I told him that this is a fking good multitool, but I don't have even 20$. He eventually go down to 5$ and I said it him: You know what? You not gonna sell it to me for 5, here is my last 10$ and it's a deal. And leather sheet with L-Wrench and bit set was included! I dunno if he was a devil and I had to trade my soul with that 10$ for a multitool but I love it ever since and it helped me a lot. It's really for a casual outdoor and indoor use. It's great to have a jack of all trade tool, especially in a tricky situation. The only Leatherman model that can compete with Leather is Leatherman Super Tool 300, but still the design is still not there ;) You can access all the tools with Victorinox, but you can't with any Leatherman. You have to unfold it to get access to every tool.

I've owned, and still own, a bunch of multitools. My favorites are Victorinox because they just have everything and their steel is more stain resistant than Leatherman's. I like the replaceable cutters on the newer Leatherman tools, and I like the way they're moving toward one hand opening in a more efficient way than Victorinox has with their attempt a couple years back, but I still prefer the overall Victorinox toolsets.

either one is great i guess. proven by tens of thousands of users daily,i see no point in arguing which one is better, stick to one you wants most and use it to its limits. i LOVE my Charge, will deff buy Ti version one day. but until then, stock one suits my needs damn well. great VS video btw :)

Leatherman for life!! I think your test was valid for the usual bushcraft purposes on your channel, however, I think the multitool shines when you are using the pliers. Leatherman pliers are rad! and the bit set that you can get is SO dang handy for any urban EDC scenario. I use my leatherman regularly in my home and on the go - but in the field I use a fixed blade, and the leatherman I really just use the pliers to get things off the fire and the little saw for projects. Now the signal doesn't have scissors, which is so lame because scissors is also a huge reason to carry the leatherman! Any way I could babble on about leathermans for a long time. fun video guys, thanks! that being said I'd pick a multitool over a fixed blade for a 1 tool only scenario... but that would make me sad I like BOTH! :D

No offense BUT , one idea of having only one tool is to use that tool to create other tools . Either of those multi-tools could have made a hardwood wedge which (with a baton) would have split wood all day without damaging the multi-tool . 😊

Nice to see a multitool here. Maybe you can try victorinox with 11/13 cm locking blades. They can take a beating. I've see one with a broken blade before its mechanism broke.

I carry a surge everyday. Into the bush alot. I have an 8 inch jigsaw blade that can attach to my surge and I can literally cut down up to 6 inch trees with it , you just have to treat it like a pull saw so you don't bend the thinner blades

My leatherman has been my multi tool of choice for a year and a half now after a Gerber multitool crapped out on me after about 4 weeks of use, it’s been through some seriously shitty environments and hasn’t failed me yet. My very first “knife” was a big Victorinox multitool my dad gave me. I’d take a leatherman any day of the week.

Awesome. I wanted to get your guy's opinion on the victorinox because I was debating on getting one but feel that they use a softer steel and has less tools than a Leatherman in terms of accessories like adapters.

If you just want something to toss in the car in case of bush craft survival needs you can assemble a way better kit for the price. You can get a decent axe for under $50 (like the Cold Steel Trail Boss), a good folding tree saw for $25 (Samurai Kisi), and a great full tang bushcrafting knife with firesteel and leather sheath for $40 (BSP Adventurer, approved by DBK). You still have budget left over for whatever else you prefer for a car emergency kit like a decent flashlight. Can't really justify the price on these multitools.

All multitools are pretty yuck for doing extended work with, but when you can't take the tool box they sure can get you out of a jam. On a boat I'd have a Victorinox, otherwise I have the Leatherman Charge TTi on my belt. Both are heavy, why a SAK Huntsman is better in the pocket. A good folder are better as a knife. Like all these things its all about what you need to do and how far you are going from a tool box/work shed. What is the least you need to carry and can still get the job comfortably done? A quality multi tool adds to the armoury of man cave essentials. My daughter has one too.
