@johnstack43162 жыл бұрын
My great grandparents on my mother's side of the family died in the Johnstown flood may 31st 1889. My grandfather John Morris was 2 years old when he was orphaned. There were around 99 orphans like My grandfather. There are no records of where they went after they were taken to Pittsburgh. The rich guys like Carnegie and the Rockefeller's didn't want the bad publicity for the tragedy they caused. They were responsible for raising the water levels and installing screens to keep fish from going over the spillway. 10 inches of rain in 24 hrs was too much for the earthen dam and it washed out. That's why Carnegie became a philanthropist and built library's because of the guilt of killing over 2200 people that they know of. The number is actually closer to 2500 since the valley was a steel valley full of immigrants. Nobody had social security numbers back then. That flood was the first time the American Red Cross was deployed.
@coldcynic22132 жыл бұрын
@@johnstack4316 I'm sorry for the loss of your family. Thank you for recounting you families history, never let it be forgotten. This story hit me hard because my brother was being flooded out a few days ago when I watched it. He is below a dam and they were releasing water to ease the pressure on the dam. No one seemed to realize that was a sign the dam was at risk. When authorities are willing to flood people's homes it's usually because they are trying to avert a larger catastrophe! Fortunately the rain has stopped for awhile and the water level has receded.
