@@VideoRevealed a part 2 with "common mistakes" of the production workflow would be great. Showing the duplicate ID errors, Improper NAS configuration,etc.

Productions continues to baffle me from a real world usage standpoint. I need to see someone doing a full project, start to finish, to see all the actual ways a production is both similar to a regular project, and different. There’s too many “if you want to, you could...” examples. I need a full video of someone doing a full project so I can see all the decision points they come to, the options they are deciding among, and what that results in. I want to see all the little frustrating aspects that pop up and how to work around them. I don’t want to get five hours into an edit using productions and realize I should have been doing it a different way all along. I’ve yet to see any video on productions that’s convinced me this would be a more efficient way of working than the project-based way I’ve grown used to and know all the idiosyncrasies and have a basic certainty on my final result. I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining about your video. It explains the basics very clearly. I’m complaining about the inherent complexity of trying to reconcile and/or incorporate this with my current workflow I’ve used for decades

The thing is, there is no "one way" to work with Productions and each editor or workgroup will create their own workflow. I know that doesn't help but Adobe always gives users an open tool to decide how to use it themselves.

@@VideoRevealed Oh, I get it, I've been using Adobe products for 25 years. It's just that this is such a different way of doing things and it's possible to really screw things up or make things way less efficient, in a way that isn't possible with the straightforward Projects. I just want to see someone going through a full project, speed bumps and dead-ends and all, so I can hopefully better extrapolate what my workflow would best look like. For example. I have a bunch of car dealerships I do monthly commercials for. Some dealerships have multiple brands (Honda, Ford, etc), while some dealerships are only one brand. Each brand has a full line of assets, like logos, running footage, etc. Each dealership has a full line of logos and music and branding. And each month is a new set of commercials, with a sales promotion that can extend across multiple dealerships. Right now, I just import anything I need into that project. But with Productions, I can see maybe making a folder.. or project or something for each individual brand/dealership/promotion and then bringing that into each individual production. But is that the most efficient way? Should I make even more granular projects that can be imported into a production? Should I make a new production for each month, or just make a new folder or project within that production for each new month? I don't have time to completely rebuild my projects from scratch to test it out. I know no example is going to cover every use case, but seeing someone go through the whole process of setting up a production and seeing what assets they have and how they use them would do wonders for allowing me to compare and contrast with my own use case. So far, I've yet to see any video anywhere of someone actually USING Productions. It's just tutorials of what the buttons do and how to vaguely set up a production.

The way Productions works is pretty much how Avid Media Composer handles their project workflow. Productions is mainly meant for multiple editors being able to work on the same project without stepping on each others toes but the benefits can still be seen for single editor project. It breaks down projects into smaller chunks so you're only ever loading the assets you need at a time, instead of every single asset that you have to wait for to finish loading. This should bring more stability and less bloat to your projects. In that sense, you can organize a Production a number of way, just like there's no one way of organizing a Premiere project. If you're only ever working by yourself, you likely don't NEED to switch workflows. Just keep doing what works best for you.

Hi Colin, As usual a complete en detailed video. I support the idea to make a video with productions from scratch. A short film with different cuts, sounds, fx and finally merged to one film to be exported. This makes it more specific. I'am specially interested in working local and experience the benefits of productions.

Colin, hi. Thank you for this tutorial. Great job. I am a noob to this feature and I wonder if you could help me understand a bit of strategy as to best practices of its use. I will be using Productions individually and NOT with outside collaborators. I am a bit confused as to when things should be a project and when it should simply be a folder or series of bins within a project. Let me explain: Let's say I have set up a new Production in Premiere in which I will bring footage from a 3 day video shoot where 3 cameras were used. Seems to me there are at least two ways to configure this in Productions, probably many more: 1. In the Productions panel create a "footage" folder. In the footage folder, I create 3 projects: Cam A, Cam B and Cam C. When I then open the Cam A project, I then create 3 bins in the project panel: Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3. I then import footage into these respective bins. I would do the same for the other two Cam projects. So, in this scenario, the Cam A project would contain ALL the Camera A footage and same for the other Camera projects. 2. In the Project panel in a second scenario, I would create, as before, a folder for Footsge and within that folder create three additional folders: Cam A, Cam B and Cam C. Then within each of THOSE folders, I would create three PROJECTS: Cam A/Day 1, Cam A/Day2 and Cam A/Day 3. Then, the appropriate media would be imported into each individual project. What I don't understand and would really appreciate your help with, Colin, is how do you determine which is the best way to do this? The first method obviously has footage in 3 projects, while the second would have 9! It seems like that's a lot of opening and closing and scrolling through different projects to get at this footage. It seems like this feature allows you to endlessly slice and dice components into different smaller projects. But at what cost in terms of editing efficiency? I would very much appreciate your thoughts.

I love ThatFile!! I really really wish that windows file manager would add columns. I often think about switching to mac just for the clean file manager and column file browsing

I'm loving ThatFile. The great thing is, the developer is actively working on updates and fixes. Oh, and I will never go back to the Mac; I started there in the 80's but I've been a happy Windows user for 10 years now. 😃

@@VideoRevealed Wow, thanks for that link. I just bought it and trying it out. Looks really cool! I like how you can adjust the column widths too. Every time I see MS talk about updates and new UI, I'm hoping for columns in the file browser natively. Hoping it will be in windows 11 or whatever it will be called coming later this month. I absolutely love how column file browsing works. I'm the same, been on PC for most of my computer days. I tried a mbp when adobe first released Premiere for it, but Premiere was super buggy at first and I switched back to PC right away. The new M chips from apple re-sparked my possible interest in a mbp. If it's not to expensive like the m1's were, might get some PC people thinking a bit with the high costs/availability of dedicated graphics cards (we'll see today). Not sure I could be swayed from my current workflow with windows, and how mapped drives and using the Disk Management in Computer Management to mount external hard drives in a folder. I've had no real major issues with windows either. It's been pretty solid for me, other than a few operational annoyances. Anyhow, thanks for all the awesome video content Colin! I really enjoy them! Question: When you setup your Production > create a project > add your media via the "Media Browser" what does the other user see when they open up the project if he or she did NOT add the same media on their end? Do they see anything? Is it assumed that they have a copy of the media on their computer? Thanks.

On my system I have lots of b-roll elements that I occasional use for one client. Currently I search on the explorer level to find clip, preview in VLC and then I drag into a bin. Would Productions all me to access all the b-roll and screen material without slowing down my system? And would I just create all my clients projects inside this Production or would it be separate Production from the b-roll Production? Many thanks.

Yes you could use Productions for that. I would use a new Production for each job though, for security in case there was an issue. Just start a new Production and import you B-roll Project.

All media should be treated the same and only reference once. Not sure what's happening there, unless maybe it's a Dynamic Linked Comp and Productions has to have that in the Project?

Do you use ThatFile over FileExplorer? Or did you use it just for a better demonstration on this video? I've been looking for something that would make organizing my workflow better. I tried Fences before but it clashed with my Laptop and didn't run smoothly. I was wanting something that I'd be able to organize folders into columns and then keep open so I could find what I needed quickly every day.

I switched to Files since making this tutorial. Files is fantastic and I love working with columns. It has a very large open source developer resource so they are constantly updating it. Check it out: files.community/

@@VideoRevealed I was using files, I found it also clashed but maybe I can try it again. My laptop isn't the most powerful. I just got the one from Yellow Pointers that you linked to in a comment below (I thought I was replying to that comment). Since it's been updated a bunch I might give it a try again, but after playing around with Direttore from Yellow Pointers I think I can make that work and it seems to be pretty responsive - I like that you can add labels and highlight files - it will help me with certain tasks.

Do all of the assets for one production have to all be located on the same hard drive?

No but you risk media missing if it's not centrally located. Other editors have to have access to everything so it's just easier to have a central hub.

colin, in a project filled with alot of UHD videos, if i share a production over the internet, does the other user have to download each video to their local machine to do editing or can i provide manual proxies, or do the videos stay online and are temporarily cached by premiere

Productions don't work over the cloud. They are on a local network only and all the media is on the local server.

Can users with different versions of premiere pro have access to the same production project?

It depends. Project versions are compatible with certain versions but not all. There is no way to anticipate what Projects work with which versions as Premiere Pro is developed, so it's always best for everyone to be on the same version.

If you Save As a Team Project, it converts to a standard Project which can be imported into the Production.

I imported a completely different Project that already had a Timeline with media on it. That's all it is, a copy of another Project.

@@VideoRevealed Colin, can you expand on this? When you 'Add Project to Production', was your media copied from it's original location? In our department, we are planning to bring archived projects into the Production. Media is scattered among many servers and folders. The goal is to "clean up" as we bring everything into the master Production folder. How can we move the assets to the new location when we 'Add Project to Production'?
