This day was action packed with bike rides, boat tours, fish feeling the most koi I've ever seen in one place, walking up 700 steps for two outstanding views and to end the day some amazing local food.

So so glad you did the tour, I agree, you are on someone else's schedule, but great to get to the different sites and the background of the areas. The cycling was amazing, but I don't remember ours being 30 minutes, it didn't seem that long. I took a photo of the horses outside the Temple too. I still drink the ginger and honey drink as we were served at lunch on our trip, (different place to yours). The boats were amazing, and our lady did all the rowing with her feet, which was incredible. I suspect there are quite a few different tour schedules, as we didn't get off our wee boat. On our first Vietnamese trip we went up to Halong Bay, pre Covid, on a small boat, overnight cruise. Sadly the firm must have gone out of business as no longer available. They do say Nin Binh is like an inland Halong Bay. I am typing as I am watching, am so excited to see all of this again. The Dragon Mountain, just about killed me, but so so worth the view, absolutely special. My husband and I were the oldest on our wee tour bus, and they were taking bets, I think, as to whether I would make it. I didn't go to the Dragon Head though. Absolutely awe inspiring. We were there early December, so not so many people. The meal looked amazing, um apart from the pig's stomach! So wonderful to eat with a local, I agree.

It sounds like your memories are as fond as ours! The meal at the end was fish stomach and tasted pretty good! Ooh, we’d have that meal again in a heartbeat!

I've found Ninh Binh to be more interesting than Halong Bay, there are quite a number of gems there. There's a Thung Nham Bird Sanctuary which is quite peaceful too, I think you missed that one, but you've already hit most of the good spots. I agree with you about the uneasy feeling at the dragon peak at the Hang Mua cave/mountain. It's pretty risky at some of the steps if you think about it 😅 But great views 😂

Oh, we really would love to spend more time at Ninh Binh - the bird sanctuary sounds nice and there seems like a lot of local life to immerse oneself in, too!

One summer I planned a cycling trip in Norway but was talked out of it by my trip mates. (Cycling from town to town and fjord to fjord.) In the end we just took the usual buses and ferries. To be fair it might have been more grueling than I planned for and it could have been a case of biting off more than we can chew. 😬 More ‘contained’ cycling tours like this look so fun though!

I am so glad you were able to visit Ninh Binh. This is my Dad’s hometown, it is where he grew up. He has been trying to bring our family back to Ninh Binh, but it has been a challenging effort because we all live on different continents. Ninh Binh i heard is like Ha Long Bay on land. It is also the place where the film Kong was filmed. It looks breathtaking.

Such an amazing place. I’m so happy I got to share your experience albeit on line. The dragon looks awesome. The surroundings would have made me feel very wibbly 😂. Lovely boat ride too. Looks a great place and as always enjoy seeing the kids 💜💜

The dragon was great to experience but I wasn’t quite prepared for how the top was! I think I thought it had some sort of platform or something. Would love to know how they made it up there ♥️
