Vikings were seafaring people originally from Scandinavia (present-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden), who from the late 8th to the late 11th centuries raided, pirated, traded and settled throughout parts of Europe...

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing your experience on sailing a Viking-Ship. I know that the Viking-Ships are good Sailboats, but i did not imagine that they can outperform modern Boats. For me, the Oseberg-Ship looks nice, but the true Viking-Ship is allways the "Gokstad-Ship". Unfortunately, all the Viking-Ship Model-Kits are from the Oseberg-Ship-Style. I have been to the Oslo-Viking-Ship-Museum two times and i was allways impressed, standing in front of the Gokstad-Ship. To build such a ship with medieval tools and skills is allways fascinating. Greetings from Germany!

Guten Tag, mein Herr, und shoenen Dank! Sorry, don’t have “umlaut” on my phone keyboard, so will continue in English. Yes, indeed. Oseberg is essentially a pleasure boat, a prestige vessel, but not an operational proper warship or merchant ship. Yet, as you point out, all Kits are only of her. The solution, of course, as ever, is scratch building. The Gockstad is interesting to be sure, the publication is easily accessible, too. However for sheer breadth of types, nothing can beat the Skuldelev fjord finds. And from the publication, an experienced modeler can easily produce first-rate, unique models. I know Olya is toying with the idea…

Oh that was nice😁 and I share your opinion about artistry . I would accedently throw away a Pollok because it looks like a used covering tarp of a paintjob🤣🤣. nice ilustrations are like made from Gary Embleton or John Howe and for sure Victor Ambrus..... The rebuilds showed to me that it is very sure to me that at least some sites in Canada or Us are still hidden, cos they knew for sure that wether and klimate getting better to the south. The smal sight in l arse o meadows is just not big enough to provide a good support for logging and trading. Maybe one day they will find more around the st Lorenz river. Thanks a lot from frosty Germany Roger S.

Yes, we clearly have similar views on art :-). Returning to L’Anse: more importantly, it does not have a necropolis. There are no burials there at all. That’s why the dominant theory is that it was just a camp; not a permanent settlement. Though now it is believed that it may have been used off and on over nearly a century; not the 10 years or so initially thought

I don’t mean to take away from the replica’s accomplishments, but not all tugboats are created equal.

Dr. Batchvarov, thank you for another excellent and informative video. I've learned so much. I'm planning to build a Drakkar model later this year based on the Pavel Nikitin it. My kit is number 109. I'd like to download a copy of the book you mentioned that is available as a PDF. I think this would be good reading before I begin to build my Drakkar model. Do you have a copy of the link to the PDF? I've also begun to do some preliminary research on Viking shield designs. Was there any significance to each separate design? I assume that the shield designs were to identify a particular individual or group. I will be painting the shields of my Drakkar model using information uncovered from my research. All of my ship model projects begin with research. Thank you for providing this wonderful channel for us neophyte modelers to learn from.

I shall dig up the link and posted here. May I point out that Mr. Nikitin's model is no doubt quite nice, but it is NOT a drakkar. It is simply a model of the pleasure boat or status ship from the burial from Oseberg. That vessel was not a drakkar: it is too small to be even a real sea-going ship. I am aware of two drakkars: the Skuldelev 2 and the Lady ship. There may be others. - it is not my period of specialization - but Oseberg definitely wasn't a drakkar. Best of luck with the research and construction!

@@kroumbatchvarov-archaeologist Dr. Batchvarov, Thank you so much for your response. It just goes to show that the title of a model kit box cannot always be relied upon. Now that I think about it, I seriously doubt that a Viking warship would have had the elaborate carving on the bow and stern that Pavel Nitkin's model has. I'm going to follow your advice and build the model for what it is; a pleasure craft or burial ship found in Oseberg, Norway. I think I will interpret my model as a burial ship. As such it will not have a mast or sail but will include some of the accoutrements to accompany the deceased monarch to the afterlife. I don't think there are too many models of Viking burial ships on display at the various model shows. More research is needed. Thank you so much for your time in responding to my query.
