Thank you for yet another interesting lecture! The idea of doing them in threes on a subject allows for greater information!!!!!

That was nice😁👍 for my part I like the viking age history a lot and do some viking reenactment as well.... in the 3 most noted ship burials Sutton Hoo, Gokstad and Oseberg there were a vast amount of all day use items. At the Gokstad ship was one of the few viking age helmets found and in that case it had a iron eye cover like glasses after the Vendel tradition. Sad that only a few of the items are shown to the publik or in literatur. For the sutton hoo ship there is a full dokumentation of the excavation availeble in atiquaries but it is sooooo expensive... 10 years ago I spend 3 months close to istanbul / Miklagard and it was a need to go to Hagia Sophia and visit the place where "Halfdan" made the grafiti. And close was a weaver and I bought some handwoven raw silk and my wife hand sewn Haitabuh baggy trousers for me 😁

There is the famous helmet from Sutton Hoo, too. Pat Tanner published an excellent article on the ship reconstruction of the vessel from Mound 1, the likely burial of King Raedwald of East Anglia.

This was fascinating. I had not heard of the accidental sinking and crew casualties before. Not a great way to find out that there had been a mistake made all those years ago. I like viking ships but my main interest is much later working ships of Europe, however, all information like this is of interest.

I don’t remember the exact year- may have been last century. But, yes- she went down. Now a new book is coming out on her by Viebeke Bischoff which ought to be excellent. I have ordered it already

I believe that you will find a model of the Gokstad made by Billings Boats of Denmark.

Thank you for this! Obviously I am not a reliable source of information on kits 😁

Perhaps your next one could be on drakkars. How do these ships compare to the earlier Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo ship? I mean the hulls themselves burial and grave goods are obviously not the same.

There is a big project on the Sutton Hoo reconstruction going on now. Sutton hoo had no sail rig- probably - while the drakkar did.

Hallo Dr.Batchvarov, thank you for another interessting video about the Viking-Ships. I am still searching for a accurate Modelkit of the Gokstad-Ship. I know the Kit from Dusek, but i think the Bow an Stern-Sections are not correct. To my eyes, the planking goes not enough upwards. There is a Paper-Model from the polish Company WAK in 1:72 scale. I think it looks more accurate than the Dusek-Kit. Perhaps i will use it as a basic-plan. But this is a lot of work!😅Greetings from Germany!

Thank you for watching and your comments! I just read that Billings Boats have a kit of the Goleta’s ship, but I have not seen it so can’t comment on it. All in all, it seems I have demonstrated that I am not a good source of information on what kits are out there 😆

THANKS! Speaking of movies, have you seen the 2021 movie: The Dig? A true story about the discovery and excavation of a Saxon burial ship of Sutton Hoo in 1938 by Basil Brown. I would love to know more.

I have heard of it, but I haven’t actually seen it. Naturally, I know the story behind it. I do remember a comment by a colleague that the film creates a conflict between the two archaeologists that actually did not exist in reality. Other than that I have heard only good about it. Currently, as you may have heard, there is an organization that is trying to build a replica. Pat Tanner is doing the reconstruction of the ship.
