Back in the 2000s, the Underworld series became one of the most well-known action horror franchises ever made. Through its first three films, Underworld, Underworld Evolution, and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, the series capitalized on the growing demand for grit and darkness in otherwise ridiculous stories, and while it may not have had the critical acclaim of films like Blade, it helped fill out what was, at least at the time, a fairly niche genre in vampire action. Of course, it also saturated itself with many contemporary cliches, including some of the most extreme uses of skin-tight leather. However, though people often remember the franchise for its dark, moody aesthetic, grimy practical effects, and of course, Kate Beckinsale, its characters and lore often seem to go relatively unnoticed. For an action horror, its characters and setting, which were increasingly expanded upon during the first three films, often outshined much of its mainstream competition. Rewatching the series recently, I found myself much more invested in the complexities of some of its characters than I thought I would be, and Viktor in particular stood out as the character that seemed to push past many of the series' limitations and become something closer to Game of Thrones than any early 2000s vampire action movie character should be allowed to.

Idk if I’d say he should have been the protagonist but he portrayal of victor was pretty great, but the character himself was probably the most dishonorable and disliked character

Solis Prime. I think the decision to reveal the vampires and lycans to humanity was a bad idea for the franchise. It kinda goes against the whole point of the series, it's called UNDERWORLD for Pete's sake, you can't call it that if everything secret has been brought out into the light for the common man to know about. It's also more difficult to believe vamps and lycans can have wars with each other when the whole world knows about them and is trying to purge them. For example at the end of Bloodlines the Lycans attack the vampires' fortress and practically blow the place up; how can two supernatural armies have such a massive battle without somebody noticing the gunfire, explosions and monsters running around and not have it result in somebody nearby calling 911 to the local purge army so they could come and exterminate everyone? Underworld really went downhill after Rise of the Lycans.

@@mfmageiwatch Yep, White Wolf, INC. (the creators of WoD RPG) and author Nancy Collins sued Sony Pictures, Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment for copyright infringement in 2003. The author Collins claimed UW’s entire plot was based on her short story Love of Monsters. I wonder what White Wolf thought of True Blood TV series (or Twilight saga, hah!) which had similar werewolf/vampire clan antagonism.

One thing I always liked about Viktor is they always gave him respect as a formidable foe. In the first film he literally was able to beat lycans bear handed and go toe to toe with a hybrid even getting the upper hand BC of his combat prowess and it literally took a sneak attack to beat him. In Rise he was only defeated bc of sunlight. And thats what makes him so intimidating, to my knowledge, no character has ever bested him without him having some sort of handicap

Yeah, thats he special thing about being a warrior before he was turned. I feel like even marcus couldnt beat him. Sure marcus is technically stronger, but marcus relied on his powers to fight while Victor has decades of combat training. Michael was much stronger than victor but Victor skills let him be able to take him on.

@@TheStellarmanCo. Because lucian was trained by Viktor. I hate how in the 1st movie lucian was whatever honestly even though he was the first Lycan but prequel we see how badass he really was. I do wonder was he only able to beat viktor because the sun and stairwells mix with him being a very capable fighter or he legit was always able to beat Viktor if it came down to it. Most Lycans/werewolves are naturally stronger than vampires.

Bill makes all the villains he play come to life in the most terrifying and mesmerizing way. Yet, he himself claims there's no trick to it, and he just does the gigs for the money most of the time. Raw, natural talent. Viktor was by far the best character in Underworld. Every time I think of it, I think about him, Markus, and the babe in latex getting boned in a container unit.

One thing I would like to point out, the only time Victor was ever seen violated his own rules was when he feed on Selene's family but even THAT wasn't done out of disgust for animal blood like Kraven claimed. It was done to protect the vampire species by eliminating the only living witness, Selene's father, to the location of William's prison after Lucien escaped with the key. Victor eliminated the rest of Selene's family as a way of obscuring his tracks from Marcus. I would even argue that the rumor that Victor spread about being the first wasn't done out of a need for validation, as he freely shared that secret with members of the council and his family, but as another layer of protection for William's prison. If Victor was the first vampire, and Marcus just one of his turned vassals as he claimed, then their was no reason to search for the missing Corvinus brother.

Not really, his fatal flaw was his need to be in control and at the top of everything. Yes he killed Selene’s family to erase any trace to William’s prison but going by what Kraven said it wasn’t a one time thing of him feeding on humans. Not only that but the specific words were that he bled Selene’s family dry, if he wanted them dead there are plenty of other ways to go about it besides draining their blood. And I don’t know what you were trying to say about why Viktor claimed to be the first so others wouldn’t look for Marcus. Are you referring to the lie of if Marcus was killed then every vampire would be? If so then that was only known to Viktor and no one else. Marcus claimed it because he knew that Viktor would kill him if he wasn’t useful, thus the lie kept him alive. The reason is proven during their confrontation when William is captured and Marcus looks around and realizes he is surrounded by vampires all loyal to Viktor, not him. The chain of elders: 1 awake and 2 asleep was set up to further undermine Marcus’ power by making it so he is forced to sleep for 2 centuries while Viktor and Amelia have time to make sure there’s no one loyal to him.

@@SoaringxDragon I'm not too clear on who exactly told Viktor The Lie about both Marcus & William, but I suspect it was Alexander Corvinus - anyone else, and Viktor ~might~ not have taken said story seriously. I also suspect that if Viktor ever REALLY put The Lie to the test and KILLED Marcus..? that Corvinus would come for him. Powerful as he is, aided by Amelia, and surrounded by a MASSIVE army of Death Dealers, I suspect Alexander would have made VERY short work of Viktor. (Marcus only got the drop on his father because his father refused to harm or kill him.)

@@Sidragrosm the one who told Viktor the lie was Marcus himself to not only protect himself from Viktor killing him but also to protect William which Viktor would not want to put to the test not only incase it was actually true and would thus mean his own death as a result, but he was also already using werewolves as slaves at that time and didn’t want to risk the lives of his daylight guardians. And I do mean werewolves, not lycans, as Lucian was born after William was captured.

Everything Viktor did since he was turned was to further his own power and erasing his history with Marcus and how he was once a human was one such thing.

Bill Nighy's body language, his gaze, his pauses before speaking. Especially his eyes. A leader through and through, although not a very pleasant one and not without dirt on him. Bill played Viktor to perfection as a viciously unforgiving tyrant of a leader, with a few soft spots. You won't see his soft spots in his mannerisms though (with the exception of Sonia's execution) you see it in his actions and decisions.

Since so many people feared Viktor already even before he was turned, no one would dare try to kill him to try to kill all vampires. Yeah I rewatched the prequel and it seemed like he really enjoyed milking the peasants of all their silver to help them out when he could have charged way less and just be fine with doing something that would help everyome equally out.

@@vegetabriefs2841 It's entirely possible that he originally came up with the lie to protect Marcus. It's also probable thathe convinced himself of that. It's also likely that he spread the lie to limit Marcus's power should he ever attempt to free William. He clearly couldn't trust Marcus on that account.

Marcus came to Viktor because he needed Viktor's army and military expertise to control and combat the growing werewolf threat that William was causing. Marcus himself had no army and his name meant close to nothing. The only thing he could offer was Immorality which Viktor jumped at. After the capture and imprisonment of William, Viktor with Amelia's support undercut and undermined Marcus' authority. Also because the original Death Dealers came overwhelmingly from Viktor's army and to a lesser extent Amelia's Royal Knights, their loyalties were to Viktor and Amelia. Hence they were able to seize power in the coven over Marcus. Also since Viktor Could never fully overthrow Marcus by killing him he and Amelia conspired to name Victor himself as the original vampire instead of Marcus. This was a ploy to protect Marcus also because Viktor and Amelia both believe the lie that if Marcus should be killed then all Vampires would perish as well including the 2 of them.

07:10 - It only made sense for Viktor to take up the mantle of "Original", mostly because he believed that the Deaths of William and Marcus would mean the annihilation of the Vampire and Werewolf species, a lie that Marcus spun to Viktor, so its very much likely that Viktor created the lie in order to ensure that any future threats wouldn't specifically target Marcus. Besides, who at the time was gonna call Viktor a liar and expect to survive? While reverence an belief that Viktor was the strongest was to be expected, what Marcus really had not considered is loyalty and what Viktor could do to Marcus instead of killing him - All those soldiers including Amelia were entirely loyal to Viktor, and while killing him is not an option, eternal imprisonment is the alternative, something that could have been done at any time when all 3 were awake.

I do understand Viktor's response to Lucien removing his collar. Bare in mind, it wasn't a spur of the moment, tore the collar off move. It was premeditate. Lucien made a key which implies he was going to use it to free himself. Granted Viktor's actions were still the wrong choice, but I understand why saving his daughters life wouldn't be enough for a parden in this case.

I hope that they make another prequel, one that explores Viktor *Before* he was turned; 'did he always come from power, or did he have to fight-uphill for it; was he born into it, or did he start-out with nothing?', etc...

In all honesty, it probably would not be worth a film. The only reason I say this is because unless Victor had dealings with Vampires or Warewolves prior to his turning, it would deviate from the Underworld setting completely. If they wanted to stay within the realm of Underworld and keep to the ongoing war between vampires and lycans, they could but doing so would change much of his story prior to his turning. Not to mention it would cause yet another problem with the possibility of undermining Markis's proposition that insighted him to agree to being turned. This only continues to spiral out of control when we also have to remember that prior to Victor, Markus (as far as we know) was the only living vampire. From what I can tell, the ammount of retconning needed just to keep the setting of "Underworld" in the picture would be too much. The only way I see this working is if Markus is the center of the story and it follows him as he appeals to Victor as his King and works his way into his inner circle to then provide the offer and put an end to his brother's slaughters. The only problem, I see there is the amount of time that possibly could have taken and if its not less than a couple of years, it gives Markus's brother too much time to roam and cause havic.

@@SeviathTheHumanDrago You could storyboard it but you would not have any grounds or rights to sell it. You could offer it to the original creator of the series through, if they are open to the idea. But you might need a little more than a storyboard if you do go that far. Possibly. It really depends on who you end up talking too.

@@christopherpoet458 I'm an aspiring author and I totally agree, I agree entirely with you itd have to focus on Marcus but I think itd have to explore more with Alexander showing how the disease caused immortality in the first place. We'd also have to see just how bad the 1st gen werewolves got out of hand in order for Alexander to send Marcus to Victor. I think Marcus acting on behalf of his father at first would be a more realistic scenario, but Alexander not wanting to entirely deplete his own resources would get marcus to find a proxy to fight his war. That's more alluded to in the 3rd movie "I've spent years, and fortunes keeping my sons war secret." If memory serves me.

First time that I saw this character in the movie, I totally fell in love. The fact that it was just not a movie with mindless killings and whatnot. But how they extended it with elders like Victor and their history was glorious. And! added to the fact that it’s played by Bill Nighly was just magnificent. It definitely put a great solid material to this movie.

I agree. This movie, and Love Actually, are the movies which made me appreciate Bill Nighy a lot. Especially the scene where Viktor berates Selene, where you can really see him feeling for her. The way he raises his voice but then tries to explain his reasoning in a calmer voice is so charming and loving(?). Very cool

There’s a reason Viktor told the new generation of Death Dealers he was the first Vampire, it was to undermine Marcus so that the other Vampires would always side with him & Amelia instead of Marcus.

Not fully true. It really had nothing to do with siding with him and Amelia over Marcus, it was to protect himself. He used Marcus own words and con against him. Marcus stated that they could not kill William or himself or risk themselves being killed, because Marcus stated that if either of them die, then all linked to them would die, meaning all vampires and lycans. So to prevent Marcus from just straight up killing him and taking control over his army, they agreed that the lie would be told, but about Vicktor instead of Marcus, this always allowed Vicktor to stay safe as an elder. This is why by the time of rise of the lycans film all vampires believe the story. otherwise lets be real, marcus would have easily gone after and taken Viktor down, because all Marcus wanted was his brother back.

@@Drakenfoul I dont know if i would go so far as to say insanely strong... Selene did slice his head is half, and she was only a much younger little vampire compared to Viktor. Viktor's strength came from his intelligence and tactics from being a ruler, and his strength came from his army. That really is about it. But mostly it was the army. It was the only reason why Marcus turned him into a Vampire in the 1st place after all.

Viktor was strong enough and had alot of combat experience to take on a Hybrid that was strong enough to fight and kill the original Werewolf ( I read that the original werewolves are physically stronger than lycams but lack any tactics or control) Tbh I feel like in a proper 1 vs 1 viktor would be able to take on marcus even after marcus became a hybrid just because Viktor sheer combat skills always tips things in his favor.

Underworld is very underrated of a series. Could/should have had an MMORPG or FPS game, plenty of lore for a TV spin off etc. Selene is the most badass woman in all of sci-fi rivaled only by maybe RE Alice. And yes Viktor was a better villain than any they had in the sequels

I don't think he was against blood union because we would no longer be at the top. He said many times that it is an abomination, to him werewolves are monsters and to mix with them would be a half monster yourself. "Even at the cellular lever our species seem destined to destroy each other" Viktor is easily the best Underworld character, the moment he died everything went to shit. Proving him right in the long run.

He is what any general would call "the perfect man for the job" he did what had to be done for his people regardless weather it was his own family being killed for it and he bore the weight of it. Integrity is a cool idea, but no one cares when you're fighting to survive.

Both Lucian and Sonya are AT LEAST 50 if not 100 years old by the time the movie happens, they are grown ups, not children, yet the script for them is like how 17 year olds behave. If Lucian and Sonya came to Viktor together in private to confess their love for eachother and ask for his blessing all the drama could have been avoided. But going behind his back and making a baby is literal disrespect and betrayal.

@@erikwolf3479- Sonya and Lucian were in their 190s by Rise of the Lycans storyline. Their relationship wasn’t like teenagers to me. Lol. It was a secret love affair for safety reasons. Viktor’s narrow-minded ideology would’ve NEVER been ok with them being together. He venomously opposed lycans and werewolves. So hiding it was best.

According to production notes, Viktor was a contemporary of Alexander Corvinus', therefore, Viktor was, chronologically, *Older* than Marcus and William. Production notes also said that Viktor chaffed-against having to obey a younger man (Marcus), which was part of his motivation for usurping Marcus (and not just that William was *too* dangerous and Marcus refused to see this fact (which is why Amelia sided with Viktor over Marcus)).

I love Viktor as a character. Charismatic, intimidating, and powerful. All things I want to see in a vampire. His presence in the first films and the prequel (the best two in the series imo) is potent and entertaining as all hell.

Totally agree about Viktor. He should have been kept alive as the central iconic baddie of the entire series, especially later on when the Lycans were so powerful in UW: Awakening. Killing him off was a huge mistake as I think he could've have been a valuable foil for Selene and Michael's relationship (I wonder what happened to Michael?).

Viktor strongly reminds me of a Confucian Legalist. He has emotions and desires, but consistently places the rule of law and upholding of traditions above his own whims. This isn't always good or helpful, but provides a consistent basis for his character to build from.

Finally, respect for one of the best if not the best cinematic vampire antagonists of all time! Underworld's magic rests on three pillars- Viktor, Lucian and Selene. As each got removed the series went to shit. They should've stopped at three. The only thing we were missing is the story of Amelia.

I thought that it was said in the story that Viktor led others to believe he was the first vampire because there were concerns if Marcus was targeted and killed, they dont know what would happen to the entire species.

I always thought Viktor claimed to be the first vampire in an effort to protect Marcus who in his mind believed that if Marcus died he would die and since he only cared about himself it was easy to claim to be the first it built him rip and protected Marcus the only one he was afraid of

Interesting video account. One thing I think needs to be clarified however is the misconception of hybrid vigour. Hybrid variants between lycan and Vampire would have not necessarily led to a superior offspring. Hybridisation creates a spectrum of gene variant offshoots that go from the worst outcome to the best outcome. Its a gene lottery in essence, and as such you cannot definitively predict the outcome as being superior/inferior. In an average outcome, one would create an entity that is less adaptive to a vampire in the areas that a vampire is greater than a lycan as the lycan's genetics would dampen the vampiric ones in areas that a vampire is greater, and the same would apply with respect to the areas that the lycan is greater than the vampire. Take an average between two genetic extremes and you often end up somewhere in the middle for any two species/groups, with some instances of preferable outcomes and lesser outcomes at opposite ends of the spectrum. I think the fear Viktor had was the chaotic nature and uncertainty of the possible outcomes, as well as the precedent that sets for the society he has dominion over. Changes to any social order, in the same way one would experience discomfort when having ones reality or outlook on life challenged goes back to the primal fear of the unknown or unforeseen. Maintaining a social order and way of life has certain outcomes as its unchanged between states of being, so to that effect adding uncertainty into the mix would cause a society to compromise its sense of identity around emerging competing identities were those new variants/expressions of life allowed to grow and replace the old standard in their own domain.

Marcus created the lie that if he died, all vampires died. To protect his own life. Which brought on the lie that Viktor was the first. I believe they go over this in Evolution. (I don’t know if this has been mentioned in the comments yet.)

Victor was never evil. Capriccios, Machiavellian, disciplined, but never cruel. Everything he did he truly believed was for the betterment of his people and species. You have to respect that, even if you want to nut him for what he did to Sonya and Lucius.

Skipping the part when they actually fell in love to, "Bro, you gotta save your loved one yo." Leaves me thinking, "Why should I care? Only two times I've seen you two (that I can remember), was when they caught glimpses of each other as kids.. to having just banged as adults." 🤷♂️😐

Fun fact, there’s a continuity error. Lucian was born in 1200 while Rise takes place around 1415 which makes Lucian and Sonja are around 200 years old during Rise. Viktor was the ruling elder during Rise and from flashbacks of raising Lucian to be a new breed of slave it is shown he was the ruling elder during his birth so he ruled from 1200-1300 (Lucian and Sonja birth) and 1400-1500 (Rise takes place/start of the war). The chain was already established centuries before then which means he couldn’t have ruled during both events considering how close together in time they are.

well, he might been ruling from 1114-1214, so he could see young Lucian, and then wake up in 1414. No one told that cycle works with actual calendar century, maybe it was "just" century. Besides, they were all awaken when they hunted Will, so maybe exceptions were made, like birth of first lykan(we didn't seen them in this session, but it didn't mean that they weren't awake).

@@bogbog4678 the first movie takes place when it was made (2003), early 2000s. That was when Amelia was going to awaken Marcus so the ruling takes place during the beginning of a new century to the start of the next. Not only that but going backwards of Amelia ruling from 1900-2000, Viktor is slated to rule during 1200-1300 when William was captured and Lucian was born, both taking place in 1202 with Lucian being born after William was captured. 1300-1400 should have been Amelia’s turn to rule, followed by Marcus for 1400-1500. That means Viktor could not have been ruling during the start of the war during the 1400s. And yes he was the ruling elder at that time because at the end of the movie Tannis is sent to secure the elders by Viktor. Elders, as in plural. And if they were awake at that time the battle at castle corvinus would have gone very differently. No, Viktor was ruling alone during that time even though it wasn’t even his turn which meant he broke the chain.

He said he grew up hearing stories of death dealers and wanted to be one when he was older but by the time he became an adult they were all gone with Selene being one of the last due to the events of the first two films and the purge which is the setting for Awakening where we meet David for the first time. David is really only in his like mid 20s. He was born during Amelia’s rule so he has no effect in regards to the chain.

I think out of all the characters in the Underworld Universe Kraven was the worst of them all, he attempted to assassinate the elders so he could hold onto his power, he broke the most important rule of all loyalty to the coven and to the rituals and rules that kept the coven alive through out the centuries.

I recently wrote one of the original creators of underworld. I emailed raze. & Try to explain Victor's presence in these films. Bring them to another level. You payed attention when he is on screen. From the look in his eyes to the command in his voice. I enjoyed him more than Marcus. If they are gonna make another underworld they need to find away to write him back in the story

Its a little ironic that Viktor didn't like the idea of a hybrid when he himself likely would have been the most powerful being in existence if he had turned into a hybrid himself. He values power above pretty much everything so its a little odd to think that the idea of being a hybrid never crossed his mind. Granted perhaps its because he looked down on the lycans so much that it never occurred to him that he would become more powerful by being half lycan.

It's because he valued the purity above raw power. He felt that becoming more powerful was not worth losing his purity as a Vampire. The purity of the species is not only valuable to him, it's deemed sacred. Violating it is Heresy. He correcly felt that the existence of a new contending species would be a risk to them, and the humanity of which they fed upon. The pureblooded werewolves were already bad enough.

On a side note what if William in his werewolf form drank vampire blood from an elder or higher rank vampire? Would he able to change back into human form?

Viktor might have liked the fact of him being the "first vampire", have him the best status, but also I believe that he did that because he didn't know if Marcus died, they all due. He also faked him being the first to protect Marcus, by that protecting all vampires.

Yes this ! Viktor is my favourite character of the series period .Bill Nighy is an absolute legend . I definitely put Viktor up there with my fav villains ...Vader , Frank Langella Skeletor , Star Wars Papy Palpatine /Emperor. His portrayal is just so believable and spot on ...love it...badass !!🙏🤙👊

I thought that it wasn't Victor needing to feel superior that had him going along with being thought of as the first vampire, but an understanding between him and Markus that with Victor known to all as the first, it kept their species safer. If Markus dies, all vampires die as he was the first, or so they all thought. But with Victor as "the first" if he died, they'd al be safe. That is why I always thought they together kept up the lie.

It's ironic that Viktor's hate for a union of the bloodlines was the very thing that made it possible in the first place. Lucian tries to make a hybrid and succeeded but with one hit to the lycan Singe Viktor made a Vampire/Lycan Hybrid which gave way for Selene to become a Corvinus Strain Hybrid and so on.

One of my favorite moments in Underworldis the moment when Viktor shows his softer side to Selene as she complains of Kraven's infatuation. Their father-daughter interactions surely deserved more time. I believe they crammed too much in one movie and left little to explore in the rest of the franchise.
