The only difference between the results is whether you lose a beer or not, the end result is the same either way. So it definitely was a waste. On the other hand, beers aren't as useful as other items, so it's not a big loss. And if you're gonna be full on items, wasting beer to make room for more items can be a good thing. Joel isn't the only person I've seen make this mistake though. And it seems like half the people I see play this game don't understand the "shooting yourself with a blank skips the dealer" rule, despite it being the foundation of the whole damn thing.

Beers are important if there are 2 live rounds in a row last or more depending on the amount of beers, you can make sure the opponent doesn't get the chance to shoot back knowing another live round is next.

29:13 Here's an idea on "Wacky Mode," what if the ONLY way to tell what the shells were was to use a Magnifying glass? As in, keep the "all black" shells part at the opening of each round, but it changes the significance of that item. (Also, it means the Dealer's AI doesn't have an unfair advantage if it checks the round. Although you could also make it useless for the Dealer by removing its ability to actually confirm what the round is...)

because i don’t know where else to put this, i think joel might really like a game called outcore. it’s got a bit of undertale, a bit of windows destruction, a bit of other indie games that have some kinda meta elements at the center of their plots, and the final boss is one of the best 4th wall breaks in gaming. also a bit of doki doki literature club for a brief section towards the end, but i don’t think he played that one.
