This is a test of the one piece 315 gr Jumbo by Bishop Archery.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 18 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 19.95 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.625" = 7 pts +.35 bonus = 7.35 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.625” = 7 pts +.35 pts = 7.35 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.75" = 5.25 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.68 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 317 grams = 8.83/10 = 7.95pts) & Edge Retention (9%, +15 grams = 9.7/10 = 8.73 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (10/10= 2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 10.54 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (5.25" = 5.83 pts )
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 33 layers= 4.71 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 20 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (10/10 = 5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
Additional BONUS:
+2.13 pts Super thick blades (.125")
+1 pt Unique cutting action/wound channel
Total Score: 90.30 pts = 10 Golden Arrows
Price: $67/head

Appreciate the video and comments John! Awesome!!! Thought the review was more than fair for this niche type of North American Big Game head. Firstly, just to clarify, while we have harvested big game with compound bows in prototypes for six years and the 315 grain works great for compound bows, I have primarily used this 315 grain with 22 inch arrow/bolts for crossbows and my traditional archery bows. The 315 is my personal favorite for North America Big Game with my Crossbows and my Traditional archery bows. Secondly, unlike the awesome serrated stone points and Magnus heads in our collection that I adore over the years...there is no cutting device between the planned mechanical cutting like on stone points, a Magnus, or a SteelForce. (There is no cutting device between the planned mechanical cutting by design and it does not exist in the prior art). Thirdly, just as lightweight sub IBO 5 grains per pound micro diameter arrows and high FPS thin bladed broadheads will always penetrate the best in friction based arrow stopping mediums such as ballistic gel, layered foam targets and cardboard...... but not so much so in big game, we have yet to fail to get a passthrough on North America Big Game over the last six years with the Jumbo 3 in 100-315 grain prototypes. That record will end with a knuckle or femur, I am certain...but even with my little 45 pound Shrew longbow = 100% passthroughs on numerous big game over the last six years. Fourthly, 315 geains is not for everyone, but check out a milder version of the Jumbo 3 in 125 grains for North America Big Game that is more geared towards compounds. Fifthly, check out my free e-book The Edge Bevel Integrity Continuum at Bishop Archery. Lastly, God Bless everyone and regardless of the brand of broadhead or bow 🏹 you shoot from a longbow through a crossbow - praying 🙏 for nothing but passthroughs for you all as at the end of the day we are a passthrough driven R&D outfit and for North America Big Game this Jumbo 3 tested 100 percent passthroughs on humdreds of animals over six years. Though keeo in mind femurs and knuckles of even deer can stop even our 600 grain single bevel sometimes. Check out that free E-Book over at Bishop Archery, normally $7.99 but right now free at Bishop Archery. God Bless You All, Sean and family over at Bishop Archery 💘

You can really tell how big of a hole these punch with the steel plate test! I got a good laugh at that point in the video. Those square cuts into the edge really do change the cut pattern. I am tempted to machine some channels like that into a more reasonable weight, one piece head like an Annihilator XL or something similar. I would assume the results would be the same. Great video John!

Just started the video and can say already the blades are way too thick and that serration is no good. Magnus did that also and it just collects hair and brings it into the wound. If it penetrates 5 and a 1/2 inches I'll be surprised.

That was actually greater penetration than I was expecting. It definitely demands a lot of momentum to make it effective on an animal. It’s designed for people shooting very heavyweight set ups like around 1000 grains or so.
@Jsfea01
@Jsfea01 2 ай бұрын
Great video! I’m confused by this broadhead. Has the weight that you would use on the biggest animals on the planet, yet has a cutting width that would limit you to smaller animals. I don’t see many deer hunters using a 315gr head nor do I see dangerous game hunters using a penetration-limiting massive cut head. Also, not saying they aren’t worth $67 a piece, but they really should be closer to 200 on the sharpness tester.

It’s definitely a niche head. Some people like to hunt deer sized game with very heavy set ups-just to put them down on the spot. They also plan to come out with a lighter weight version that would be more commonly useful.

John, if you dont mind telling, how many shots into the cinder block does that arrow you're using for tough shots usually survive? Or does it survive all of them and you're still using the same one? I've run into a situation where i'm travelling with a suitcase and i cant bring any kind of target with me, but i bring my disassembled recurve bow and arrows with me. I've thought about getting some really tough arrows and just shooting them into a side of a hill for practice, i wonder if a set up can be made where the arrow will survive being shot into the dirt with rocks in it. What do you think about that? My recurve pulls around 50lb at my draw weight and isnt the fastest so energy wise its probably half of your compound bow at best.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 ай бұрын
I can typically get about 20 shots into the concrete. The arrow rarely breaks, but eventually the insert comes out. I often glue it back in and keep shooting it. If the insert gets too loose, then I shoot it into concrete, then sometimes the arrow will break. That’s really the only time that the arrow breaks. They also make an arrow called the GOAT that would never break. I use those for my crossbow bolts.

It’s a niche market. I’ve used Broadheads that heavy for very heavyweight situations, like Cape Buffalo. Bishop even makes a 600 grain Broadhead for that very purpose. Some people like hunting Whitetail with over 1000 grains, just to give them incredible momentum with a very large broadhead, so they can put the deer down immediately. People do that especially in suburban areas where they don’t want the deer to run in into someone’s yard, or in very thick areas where tracking would be a huge challenge.

This head could certainly, work well for them. For the average Hunter, they really is not much use for this.

Thanks for all your testing, I go to your videos anytime I’m considering a new broadhead. I really pay close attention to the accuracy test. I noticed your xbow bolts are over 600gr which slows down the bolt a good bit. Is it possible to add in a lighter bolt so that your speeds are over 300fps? A lot of us shoot faster bows, and some of the heads don’t do well over 300fps, it would be nice to see that in the tests as well.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 ай бұрын
I chose that weight so I could get a speed of right around 300 ft./s. That way it is a very comparable test of the aerodynamics at a compound bow speed. I understand there are other variables like Aero length and spine and so forth. But from a share speed perspective, it is very similar. to test them at 400+ feet per second would not be of any value to my compound bow audience, which is the vast majority of my viewers.

Just a little over the top. I’ll pass on this one. My 62# DW wouldn’t even get this thing airborne.👍👍

:) It’s definitely a very heavy weight set up.

Judging by the comments, this broadhead is a HUGE marketing and engineering FAILURE.

Well, comments are one thing; performance is another. It’s definitely not a head for most; but for people with very heavy set ups wanting to put a deer down fast, this will do it.

Basically it’s a Massive QAD Exodus with a bit of Magnus Buzzcut 🤔🤷‍♂️ not very innovative imo just a copy of others ideas

Haha. That’s funny. Neither of those have even close to the same dimensions, materials, or construction. But other than that, they’re similar :)

How can he justify charging what he does for his products. It's absolutely asinine

It’s the cost of using all US steel and machining and hardening, of S7 tool steel. He could go to China and make a similar head for much less, but is die hard on using all US stuff. Many broadheads claim to be all US made, but get their steel in China.

@@stephenferguson6363 ok that's not what I'm referring to at all. It's like $300-$600 for 3-6 broadheads. And around $800 plus for a 1/2 dozen arrows. The dude is smoking crack. I love this channel but the bishop company is is insanely overpriced. Read his bio. The dude is VERY proud of himself and will let you know.

Bishop may make good products, but their website is absolutely horrible. It's the most confusing and un-user-friendly website for hunting gear. It's a shame.

Yeah, you’re totally right. And Sean, the owner knows that full well. He’s got a young family and works as a principal full-time and knows his gift is not in marketing. But he doesn’t have the money to hire somebody to do it for him. He is just pure passion and experience and research and knowledge and intelligence, like few others in the archery community. he does everything himself, but knows his strengths and his weaknesses quite well.

A Broadhead you need a second mortgage to pay for General generic tool steel nothing special Oz per ounce is dam near near more expensive than gold

Well, to get that size of S7 tool steel-all bought and machined and hardened with a proprietary process in the USA costs a lot. Many heads say they’re made in the US, but are not.Everyone has different budgets; some can afford it, most cannot. But it sure is intriguing.

Completely useless lol. You need 90lbs limbs to get that arrow moving 250fps to penetrate 3 inches lol.

Well, there is a niche group of Bowhunters, who like to use very heavy set ups, in order to put the animal down very quickly. There are also crossbow hunters who like to use a very heavy set up for the same reason. In tissue, and with that much momentum, I think the penetration would surprise you.
