That Akai is really Killer. I have Vol 1 of the Lyman Exotica on LP....Love that stuff, Martin Denny and Les Baxter too. Man it must be great living in that part of the country with all the open space and no crowds. My Dad worked around there way back in the 1950s on the Platt oil pipeline, he always told me it was his favorite part of the country.

I actually live in the city so it's not ALL peace quite...but my neighborhood is fairly chill. I get to drive around in the countryside all day for my job though, so it's nice to get away! I love collecting exotica records! I've got a LOT! I've got most of Martin Denny's catalog...most of the Arthur Lyman records...most of the Les Baxter...and lots of other stuff!!!

I would’ve found out who that vendor was and cut a deal for the whole box! LoL! I was drooling over all those books! I find those antique malls are over priced tho for records! I'm seriously thinking about going back and doing just that! Make an offer on the box! Tuco, you had me upon seeing that gorgeous Akai reel-to-reel deck! Holy cow! More than 20 years ago, I bought several Akai reel-to-reel decks on eBay including an Akai GX-646 deck like that one, but mine is a silver model with its original heart-shaped plastic dust cover. What I paid 20 years ago ($100 to $200 per unit on average and about $350 for an Akai GX-646)) is still a fraction of what they sell for now ($1,000 to $1,200 or more), so what a treat to see one of the top Akai models at a garage sale for a bargain price of only $40. Plus, the black Akai reel decks sell for even higher prices than the more common silver models, so that was quite the score, Tuco. :)
@VinylHunter

I'm surprised the black sell for more than those gorgeous silver faces! I'll have to Ebay a dust cover for mine! It's also missing a cover that goes over the heads.

Hey Steve, same here in antiquey places, so often overpriced occasionally underpriced by the clueless. Stalls are so expensive too so I kinda get it. That was hard work but you seemed to enjoy it. You are like me go in for some small talk jokey chat just be yourself rather than a hard nosed dealer 🙂
@VinylHunter
@VinylHunter Жыл бұрын
Yes! It's something that you've really got to enjoy doing. Thrifting, garage sale-ing, etc is not for everyone! I love doing it whether i find stuff or not...it's the thrill of the hunt. Many people don't enjoy it because they go to one or two places and they don't find anything, and give up out of frustration. Speaking of booth/stall rent. Most people have a hard time selling enough stuff to pay the booth rental fee. I've been in that world...i know lots of people in that world. Say, for example, their rent is $150 for a month...they struggle to sell $150 worth of merchandise...and that's $150 total sales, not $150 profit...so usually they are actually losing money!

There's plenty of duds in the space age genre...i collect the good and the bad...$1 blind buys. A lot of times though, if it looks really cool, it usually is. You must be a mind reader haha. I was just thinking how much I hate having the stickers on the covers and then you said that :-) The local record store I do a lot of my in-store purchases from puts a small sticker on the backs of each LP with a date and the price. It is really small but what I don't mind so much about it is they are easy to peel off once you get home. I've bought some that had been on for a few years that were a little more difficult to cleanly remove but in the long run they aren't too terribly bad. I learned to wait until I've listened to the LP and made sure it was something I wanted to keep before taking that back sticker off too. I wish nobody put stickers on the LP's cover just so there wasn't any risk of tearing the cover or leaving that gunky residue behind. I hope your 2023 is off to a good start and keep on making these interesting find videos. Like I said before, it makes me feel like I'm out doing it but I can't due to my vision and lack of being able to drive anymore. It sure makes me want to though! I'll just keep living vicariously through your videos until I can find a way to get out and do some searching myself again 👍 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

I had an experience awhile back at an antique mall where i was buying an upgrade to my Lalo Schiffren Mission Impossible. I found a pristine copy at this place...except they put a small sticker on the cover. I thought it was not the end of the world though...i can just use a hair dryer to remove it. When ringing up, the lady started to remove the price tag (because they use it to keep track of who gets the money) I asked her can she please not take that off...but she ignored that, said she needs it, and kept removing it...of course, totally ripping a good hole in the cover.
@Bootradr
@Bootradr Жыл бұрын
@@VinylHunter exactly. If they want to put a sticker on it to pull off, then put one of those 3 mm sleeves on the outside and put the sticker on that. Or at least do it in a way where it's not going to rip or tear, or even make a hole in, the cover art. There's ways they can do it but they don't seem to worry too much about it. That really bites when it's something you were really glad you found. And some of these stickers I've seen are not small either and I think they use super glue on them haha. A lot of the people selling don't have a clue about things like this but at the same time you would think a little common sense would make them think twice before they slap the gooey sticker on it :-)

Gotta love it when they charge high prices for meh records under crappy clothing. At least they weren't stored horizontally -- I have a big pet peeve with antique mall vendors charging high prices while improperly storing their vinyl. The Association as the first record in a crate - the price is a great indicator of if that booth is reasonable or delusional in pricing. I never know what to say to people when they ask "what kind of records are you looking for" because I (like you) have very eclectic tastes and often the weirdest thing in the crate is the one I'm most likely to buy.
@VinylHunter
@VinylHunter Жыл бұрын
Yeah, when someone asks what kind of records I'm looking for, i just say my tastes are all over the place. It's easier than saying "metal, punk, jazz, exotica, anything inappropriate, weird electronic records, space age, very valuable records at very cheap prices...." etc

Antique stores are among the worst places for vinyl digs, because each of the dealers have pie-in-the-sky hopes that THEIR mangled John Gary and Pickwick orchestra albums will snag an unsuspecting “new” vinyl enthusiast. @TorontoJon
@TorontoJon Жыл бұрын
@krwd I've tracked the "SOLD FOR" eBay prices of Akai reel-to-reel decks for about 20 years and I can guarantee that Akai decks are highly sought after and prices have skyrocketed in recent years compared to when I bought several Akai units, a Pioneer RT-909 deck, and three Tascam units back in 2001 to 2003. Akai GX-646 models are the cream of the crop and whether they are silver or black units, they command very high prices in either working or non-working condition and the black version like the one Tuco bought is rarer than the silver units, so they command even higher prices. Either model, black or silver, sells for over $1,000 easily and as Tuco mentioned, he has seen units sell for $1,499 that were "parts only". They are also sought after by some rock bands (and by vintage audio equipment collectors, of course) for their sound quality and features, so they are very much in demand.

Hey TUCO, I started going through some more of those 400 plus mostly NM or mint LPs that were passed on to me by a friend last April. A lot of the music just isn't my kind, as in this example I'm going to post a link to, but I know you like those exotica covers also so I thought I'd share this one with you. You probably have it but maybe not? It's taken me about an hour to get the dead wax info but I finally got it well enough with my magnifier and a few photos. But anyhow, I thought of you when I saw The cover on this one. A lot of these albums I've never seen or heard before. Have you ever run across this one? It's definitely not my kind of music but I'm surprised they would have been able to put this album cover out in 1982 when the LP was released :-) Michael Franks - Objects Of Desire Url: www.discogs.com/release/2545343-Michael-Franks-Objects-Of-Desire Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
