Virginia researchers work on solution for loss of smell from Covid infection

One of the lasting impacts for people infected with Covid-19 is the loss of sense of smell. NBC’s Dr. Akshay Syal explains why two Virginia researchers may have a solution for the nearly 15 million people worldwide suffering from this long-term loss.

I hope they do find out. I lost my smell and taste buds on 12-21-2020 and here it is 2023 and I still have not even a piece of smell or a taste of taste. And I’m here to say IT F’N SUCKSSSSSS!! I used to love cooking, but I don’t even enjoy it anymore. Not because I can’t taste it, but because I have no idea what it smells like and I can’t just walk away from the stove like I used to be able to. I have to monitor it to all the time because I used to be able to tell when it’s done based off the smell. So I hope they find a cure!! It’s very depressing. I want to be able to smell again.

I'm sorry to hear. It's terrible for anyone to experience that. My taste is about 35% of what it used to be and my smell maybe 10-15%. Life is so bland. Suicide is so tempting knowing that it will probably never be 100% back to normal even with successful treatment. Stay strong.

And how much does this technology and the cost of surgery cost? I don't see the benefit of brain surgery to get all or even part of my smell back.

It took a year for me to fully get my senses back. It was crazy. I couldn't smell or taste anything and then it was weird. All poop 💩 smelled like diesel ⛽️ fuel.

Good luck to them. I lost my smell and taste in 2020 and have now recovered around 50% of what my original senses were. For example, I couldn’t smell our gingerbread house last Christmas unless it was touching my nose. Also, I cannot smell or taste at all for a while after waking up. It’s been really tough, but I am thankful I can still experience it in some way, even if it is weakened.

Try to often eat garlic and drink ginger, try smell different things and exercise when you have time, I manage got my sense of smmell and taste doing this. Hope this helps ~

Was feeling unwell for more than couple of days (the usual viral symptoms). Baked a cake day before yesterday and thought it weird that I couldn't smell it but blamed on my stuffy nose. Today, I felt a little better and while cooking vegetables, I realized that I can't smell anything 😟 went around the house trying to smell various things but couldn't. If I put the thing I'm smelling really close to my nose, I do feel I can smell vaguely but can't be sure, maybe the mind's tricking me. I hope and pray that my sense of smell returns as well as all the people suffering from it. 🙏🏻

I lost mine in January 2020 and work in seafood restaurant I don't smell anything even dumpsters outside which are horrible. Miss garlic as far as tasting I'm done everything is tasteless or when I do it's not right

I started losing mine years before Covid hit. At first it was sporadic. Then it seemed permanent. Just received a packet from the Parkinson's Foundation. I cannot smell much in it. I think, one day, I caught a sweet sense of bubble gum but that is on our tongue too. Sometimes, as I have read, loss of smell can precede neurological diseases later, such as Parkinson's, MS, dementia, and Alzheimer's. Parkinson's is in my family, on my mother's side. Needless to say I am scared. So, I am trying something a Dr. Berg has written about, taking certain Vitamins. He also said something about insulin inhalation therapy but I don't know how to obtain that. (He is a Scientologist but has a wide following. So, I don't want to judge on that alone.) Who knows, he might be on to a cure. Life is so different. I try and whiff a flower and nothing. I cry at times too. Life without smell is dull.

READING THESE.COMMENTS SCARE ME! today is 3/23/2024 and I gave NEVER gotten covid before until this week. My gma, son and I are on the mend and feeling better and BOOM lost my smell today. I've heard ppl try to explain it to me and I couldn't understand. I had son much horseradish on my French dip earlier and I was thinking wow this must be a very weak kind. I just put my nose in Vicks and still nothing. I know a lot of ppl that have their senses back and there are those that say it hasn't gone back to normal. If I can't smell my toddlers hair after a day in the sun or taste food right.,.guess I'll be losing weight finally.

I lost my sense of smell. I can only smell 30%. Miss smelling this I love. I still cannot tolerate citric smells. Hope this comes to my area soon

I lost my sense of smell from RSV. Only have 25% of taste. It's terrible, as I had a very hightened sense of smell. I hate this.

I lost my smell but every now and then I weirdly smell very strong cigarette smoke which is suffocating but there’s no smoke near me

Had covid. Had zero respiratory symptoms, lost smell for 3 months. chicken smelled like metallic burnt coffee grounds. Not implanting a chip in the brain!

I caught covid last year. I lost my taste and smell. Luckily, that's no longer the case. I can taste and smell perfectly fine again.

Not sure this is worth it for brain surgery. And having to wear the glasses all day? And u lost the smell when going to sleep because u have to put down the glasses so if there’s a house fire then this is useless
