Episode#6 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
In this video I will be talking about all of the parts you will need to make a virtual pinball cabinet as well as where I got them from, how much they were, and all of the little things you need to know about them. This cabinet will have SSF (Surround Sound Feedback) so information on all of the external sound card/exciters/base shakers/amps will be discussed. In future videos the LED addressable strips/dot matrix/DOF and mechanical upgrades will be shown. Remember you will need monitors and a computer to build this vpin cabinet and these have separate videos already out, check em out!

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!!! These vids are absolutely crucial for those wanting to build their own cabinet. I have already built mine but man....it was quite a lot of trips back and forth getting all the stuff I thought i already had. This would have saved me a ton of time. :) I went with an SSF setup to start with as well and I am just now adding a shaker moter, maybe a knocker, solenoids and addressable LED's and getting ready to start with DOF. That part I am slightly intimidated. Really looking forward to seeing how you go about tackling that one as there aren't any guides out there that are up to date on this process and it seems to confuse quite a few people. Great videos......really good stuff. Thank you. :)

Thanks Joe! Yeah it looks like there are a lot of people looking for this info as this video especially is really popping. Sounds like you are heading where I am. I'm going to finish the cabinet with ssf and then add everything as separate videos, like led lighting, dof, ssf, bam/Kinect, shaker motor, knocker, etc. So stay tuned and I'll show ya how I end up doing it on my cab. Love the build so far, makes me want to document my process. One note, the power switch you referenced on the coin door is actually a 'slam tilt' switch. It was placed there to prevent people from beating on the coindoor in a commercial setting. If that triggers due to a hard hit to the front of the cab (and it takes a lot), game over. No ball over like a traditional tilt, just loss of credit. We have one on our 1988 Williams Cyclone at work and it's actually convenient if you just want to reset your game due to an early drain (they didn't have ball saves in that era) in a free play home setting. Keep it coming!

Ya you're right. Funny enough I just made a bracket yesterday to hold the coin door switch for cutting power to high voltage. I'm going to use it for telling vpx that the coin door is open and later I'm going to add some lighting to turn on when you open the coin door so you can see inside. I don't think I'm going to use that slam switch but easy enough to do it later. Yeah the build is getting close to playing....hopefully it doesn't stall because I'm too busy playing it! I used the same DAEX58P exciters, however I used the Dayton BST-2 bass shakers. I used the BST-1s on my home theater chairs and they are insane complete overkill for a virtual pinball machine. I probably never even use more than half power on my BST-2s in my cabinet and there are a lot cheaper. SSF is incredible and a complete game changer when it comes to virtual pinball. You will enjoy it.

how big was your cabinet (full size)? good to hear about the smaller bass shakers. Would larger exciters be beneficial, or same to stay with the DAEX58P - I was considering 'DAEX32QMB-4'

Thank you for this instruction video. Maybe 1 tip: I bought a secondhand 4K TV (Samsung UE40MU6120) for the playfield. (Yes they are hard to find) and set it to 1920 x 1080 in Windows. That way I do'nt have to buy a very expensive graphics card and can wait until the prices have dropped. The trick is that the TV itself makes a 4K picture, (it smoothes the edges a bit so it looks better than on a 1K TV). Thank you and keep up the good work.

That's actually a really smart way to build a cabinet....kinda like prebuilding for your eventual upgrade because the monitor is the biggest issue. The gpu is a simple swap later. Dang son....where was this tip at the beginning of my build!!! Thanks for the watch!

You don't need a separate PWM fan controller, you can just use the one built into your computer motherboard. Every motherboard has at least 3 and up to 6+ connectors for PWM fans that adjust based on the motherboard or CPU temperature sensors.

You're right but I like this PWM fan because they're quick to adjust and setup for 4 fans and it has a built in alarm for if you lose a fan and it speeds up the fans if temps get too high. Pretty cheap too. Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench To each his own. You can also use software to set alarms on the PC for a failed fan or certain temperature limit as well though. I mean, why pay more when the functionality is already built into the computer? 🤷‍♂

Currently I have a Ryzen 3 2200g, 16 GB of 3200 RAM and a GTX 1650 video card. Any info you can provide will help me a lot! Also, are you using Future Pinball or Visual Pinball X - or both? LOL sorry for all the questions. BTW I have decide to repurpose a nonworking Williams Pinball cabinet and use that as my cabinet. Thanks Bruh! I am using an i5 roughly 3.1 ghz with 16g of ddr3 ram and a gtx 770 plus a 500g ssd. I saw your specs, you will have no problems with 1080p and maybe even 4k at 60 hz. Cool, a standard size Williams cabinet? I looked for one myself, but everyone wanted way too much for them. Decided to just make my own and I'm currently assembling the wood cabinet, if ya wanna see pics, check my instagram. Cheers!

@@wayofthewrench Thanks for the quick reply!! My brother gave me a Swords of Fury pinball by Williams and it is poor shape. I finally decided to gut it and make virtualpinball machine out of it. He really wanted me to "fix" it but the money involved in doing so were stupidly expensive. Thanks for your info it really helps a lot. I am a PC nerd by trade and have a lot of monitors an such laying around - but for the playing field I plan on buying a 4K 43 inch Best Buy Insignia model TV - they are like $260. I have the same model as my home TV and it rocks for the money! I hope to see your progres on your build!! Thanks again. BTW Future Pinball or Future Pinball? Or both for your build?

One thing to possibly consider is to change the long spring on the plunger. For a VPin cabinet you don't need such a strong spring as originally fitted. And the springs are colour coded. White or brown springs are weaker but perfect for VPins. They still give the feel of a plunger without being stiff and clunky as they don't need much potential energy for a real ball. My mate got a plunger without swapping the spring and the difference is night and day.

Yeah I have heard about doing this change but I was going to see how it felt on my cabinet before I looked into the springs. Do you know where the softer springs can be bought? I'm assuming somewhere like pinball life? Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench Any pinball place should be able to help. I'm in the UK and there are only about two or three small suppliers. But one guy I bought the entire plunger assembly from told me about this when I mentioned it was for a VPin. He advised to change the spring and sent me a white one already fitted and a spare brown one. Mine is only a 2/3 sized mini cab and it works great. Lovely and smooth to operate.

I don't think I've seen any build that uses a bass exciter with the 4 side exciters. Curious how that works out as I'm going full SSF as well. I think I'm going to add solenoids too, but maybe down the road and see if SSF is enough. Loving the detail and thoroughness. Makes me excited about getting mine going!

The switch on the coin door is the slam switch, works like tilt so people didn't try to beat the door and get free games.

@28:42 - You always get Robertson head screws, because you live in Canada, and that is a very popular screw head in that country. Invented in Canada I believe. In the US they can be found but you have to look real hard to find them. Yes I agree, the Robertson head screws are superior for wood working because it does not slip off of the bit. My preferred screw head when wood working.

thank you very much for your video and your help. I wanted to ask you if you consider the 2x Dayton Audio BST-1 Bass Shaker necessary? I was thinking in order to reduce the cost, I used only 4 small Dayton Audio's DAEX58FP. or is it just one bass shaker instead of two?

Tempered is what turns into a bunch of small pieces. Laminated safety glass has a film that keeps it in one piece(ish)

Yup sounds right. The front wind shield of a vehicle is usually laminated but the sides are tempered. For pinball we just need it to not turn into shards and it makes the glass stronger too. Thanks for the watch!

I've been searching amps and the one flaw with these TB21's is the Bluetooth addition itself. Without pass protection anyone can tap into pin audio and bt overrides pc connectivity. I've been trying to see if the bt chip can be disabled but no luck. Would be nice if these were available without the bt 5. Someone posted they had to cycle power on the amp to break the bt signal, but all the neighbor need to do is reconnect back to amp

I didn't even think these had BT but as long as your neighboor isn't a ding dong this shouldn't be a problem. If they are, invite them over for beer and pinball....problem solved. LOL. I actually want BT and bought a 2.1 Logitech for it. Good to know about the BT possibility though, I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the watch.

Your videos have all been interesting and this one is the best. Great suggestions, the right level of detail and indexing to help get right to the recommendations when looking things up. Thank You. I do have a question regarding the smart power strip and concept. Most TVs or monitors do not power on when power is introduced so having the device receive power in itself will not power the monitor on (without remote control intervention). Is there a jumper or setting which can be enabled to have it power when the smart strip enables power to the monitor?

Thanks Scott! These virtual pinball cabinets are massively complex projects so I'm just trying to share my experience with people so it's not so daunting at first. If you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate a share out on your social media so I can help more people. With the monitors, there are a bunch of tricks to get them to turn on automatically. First one is turn the monitor on and unplug it and then plug it back in. If it turns back on then you don't have to do anything. Some monitors need an hdmi signal to trigger it to turn on so try the same test with a pc on and sending the signal. Some tvs have a setting in their menu to allow it to turn on with hdmi signal. On my Raspberry Pi arcade cabinet, I had to put in a delay of a couple seconds because the tv would turn on a second or two after and the signal to connect was missed. Another trick you can do is try the original unplug method but manually hold the power on switch for the tv when you plug it back in. If that works then you have to either tape/glue down the power button or you can decase the tv and solder a jumper over the momentary button switch for the power button. The other option is to put in an IR remote switch/repeating switch that can turn on the tv like you would with a remote control. I still have to figure out what I will need for my 3 monitors once it is all setup with the smart power strip but I will share that info in a future build video. Thanks for the watch Scott!

I hope there is no noticeable latency in the external sound card since the signal has to travel through the USB bus for things like flipper sounds. There are a lot of resources on external USB sound card latency from musicians. I wonder if you could swap in with the music if you had to? Easy enough to test before installing I guess.

Me too! Well, I guess I get to be your guinea pig as I already bought it so we will see. Worst case scenario, I just buy a sound card...no biggie. I know that a lot of people use this set up though so it should be fine. I have heard though that you don't want the external sound card plugged into a powered usb hub, just straight to pc. You also want to download legit drivers from actual sound card website and not generic Windows ones.

SSF system is applied for zaccarias n pinball Fx (and pinball 3) or just for VPX? I want to add force feedback with that exciters and at the moment wasn’t playing that much VPX system, kind flip me out all those endless configurations.

You should be able to use SSF for any pinball program out there, it's just a matter of setting up the audio settings. If you have access to the surround sound audio settings on Zaccarias/FX then you can do it.

I plan to purchase one from Pinball King, shipping is insane but oh well... however, i worry about maintenance since idk jack about... jack lol. How often do things break down in these? I know it's way less than standard pins. But the one i want has solenoids and all that noise. Do those often require repairs? Should i just go with something basic without the motors and bells + whistles?

Honestly? I would recommend you make your own cabinet and learn all the stuff you don't know so that later you can work on it yourself. Plus the huge plus is you get save a ton of money by doing the cabinet yourself ( like thousands $$$). Then you get to buy all the bells and whistles.....literally...lol. As for things breaking, I would say things don't break a lot but you may have a wire detach or a monitor fail or a pc part fail. All of these will be waaay easier to fix if you built the cabinet. Have you got the chance to try the kinect? Is it worth the experience? I ask because we get a cool experience from the videos on youtube but we have stereoscopic vision and the live experience is always different.

From my experience I have heard that the Kinect/BAM setup is underwhelming. I bought a used Kinect to try it out but haven't yet. I was going to design it into my vpin cabinet but after hearing the reviews I decided against it. I will definitely try it on my cab and do a video for it and I'll give you my review/verdict of it. Im not sure exactly but I would look at the amount of good reviews and make sure the output/input specs are the same. These are pretty cheap amps so at least there is not a ton of money lost if they arent great. Vpforums.com is a good site to see what everyone is using these days.

Oh man shouldnt have seen the kinect...now i need to do this too. But how will it manage tracking if you lock down on the tablet. Is there already some tablet on youtube with this?

Well there is a bit of an issue with the kinect as it sounds amazing but people complain about issues like if there is 2 people in front it doesn't work and it's not true 3d unless you have glasses on and things like that. I am going to set it up on my finished cab to try it out but I don't want to get too excited about it yet. Stay tuned for how well or not well it works in a future video. As for tablets, I'm not sure. As long as you can install the required programs, I would say it would work. Thanks for the watch!

I haven't installed the kinect yet so I don't have any videos out yet for that but I will eventually. Yes I am focused on vpx right now but will be adding videos for future pinball and fx3 later....personally I think the vpx tables are better. Thanks for the watch!

Initially I was going to Fab a MDF lockdown bar as I was primarily using a 42", 32", 15.5 laptop screen and a pc components I already had. But the more I learn the more I want to add. So now, with all of the toys I've added, I decided to get the wide body tempered glass and lock down bar and latch. I have nearly every part now with two over-priced sheets of 3/4" Ply in the garage. I have it all set up in what I am calling my Dev-Station. I followed TerryRed's mega FP guide, last night, and added about 8 FP tables. None of them have feedback. Only the one included with ballerinstaller has dof. Seems you have to choose tables with dof.? For now I really just want to use it to setup the vpx 3d pov. Keep the awesome videos coming. Thanks.

SOMEWHERE.. i commented that i was thinking of using black form ply, but i have since learned that not much sticks to it, so glue won't work well.... though i guess i could sand the black layer off where needed for glue first..?? Or should i just go with normal ply? Thoughts?

Hrmm....personally I would go with cabinet grade plywood so the glue will have way stronger joints for the long term. The laminated black ply is nice because if you don't want to paint, then it's pretty much done though. Honestly, I'm treating my vpin cab like my baby and I am doing everything the way I would suggest someone else do it. It's just my take though, technically there is no wrong way to do these projects. Did you have to pay crazy duty, if so, how much? Also, i am interested in the KL25Z board, but not the plunger. Do you know where that can be purchased separately? Please keep up the great videos.

Why are you not interested in the plunger? It's the best part no? I know right now the kl25Z board is very hard to get. Was your aluminum c-channel .5 x .5 external? The Amazon link you have has the internal (channel) dimension at .5 and the exterior at 5/8". My guess is you meant to say .5 x .5 internal dimensions but wanted to double-check. Thanks!

As far as I know, VPX doesn't care what type of brand table it is and you can select in preferences whatever keyboard button or button you want. It is usually 4 or 5 though if you didn't change it. Thanks for the watch!

I don't have any square buttons on mine and I'm not sure where you would get them, maybe a google search will find them. I used one of the rectangle buttons from the plunger kit but I used the round buttons on the front. I actually liked the chrome bezel on my other buttons so I swapped them in. Thanks for the watch!

Is it OK to use 22 awg wire for the 12v stuff (LEDs,beacons,motors eyc)?

I would say no. You can use 22 gauge for signal wires like button press inputs but anything running power should be at least 18 gauge maybe even 16 gauge. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch!

Just my hobby from a day job data analyst. I started with a $1200 Simpsons machine that had been through a flood. That same machine would probably be double now. The old cabinets I had and tossed out on the curb to get them out of the way were GONE within minutes. Xenon cabinet, Future Spa cabinet, even plywood hand made crappily cabinets were snatched up. What is going on! My worst machine now will fetch about $3k. Best vertical MAME games... Donkey Kong's - Gyruss

Now that I'm done with mine, I can tell you that my $1500 CAN vpin build is just as good as any of those big budget builds.....you just have to build it. A lot of the money is the labour. You should build one! Thanks for the watch!

@@wayofthewrench yeah if I could do it for under $3k I would do it, but I just dont see how you manage to do that. the screen and video card would be like half that budget, the only part I really dont want to deal with is building the case and legs. I'm perfectly happy to do all the wiring, painting, sticking, etc. But would really want 4k 120 and to have proper tilt and solenoid bumpers and surround etc, and finding out everything you need to make all of that work just is a big hill to climb. Congrats on working through all of that! This was a nice series to watch!

If you watch my series through from the start I explain how I did it but yes it will be much harder to do it for 4k and 120 hz. There is a big jump to that; however, I am loving my 1080p at 60hz vpin and will enjoy it while I save up to upgrade it to 4k 120hz. The trick is to use your social network and see if you can get free/cheap monitors/pcs/gpus that they have laying around the house from their recent upgrades. you'd be surprised what people have laying around. 41:24 This is bad advice. Dunno if I'm understanding correctly. But you should ONLY use the cables that came with the PSU. Do NOT use other modular cables that you "have lying about the house". The thing is the motherboard/GPU/drive end of the lead is standardised. So the wires in the block that plugs into your hardware will always be in the same positions no matter what PSU it comes from. But that's NOT always true at the PSU end. The different wires can be in different positions in the plug from one PSU to another. So you might send 12V to a 5V USB device if you pull a lead "from somewhere about the house".

Yeah I should have been more clear on this. I have a bunch of PSU wire harnesses that I would plug into the PSU and the figure out what wire was what voltage with a multimeter. Once I found the voltage I want, I would trim/cap all other positive voltage wires. There should be a couple wires that will most likely need to be wired together to cause the PSU to switch on as well (green and black I think). One thing I'm not 100% sure about is what wire needs to be connected to be a common reference ground with other power supplies. You happen to know which for sure? I think I remember seeing something about V-.

@@wayofthewrench Well I've only ever put 2x PSUs together like that twice before. But the way I understand it is that all the earth/ground wires connect together inside the PSU case anyway. So it shouldn't matter which ground wires you take. As for the modular leads, a decent modular PSU should come with plenty of leads and you know for sure they'll be OK. Don't think I've ever come across a modular supply with no leads... unless someone were to pick up a freebie or used unit.

Yeah the PSU always have tons of extra harnesses and you never use all of them. Those are the ones that I was originally referring to. If I had to buy a PSU for this project, I would just buy the other type mentioned in the video as they are more compact and way cheaper. Cheers from across the pond!

Yes but you will pay through the nose for a mini PC that is really lower end, especially in the GPU department. Way better to buy a better PC and decase it to fit. Thanks for the watch!

As long as I can get 3 screens for now I can live without all the toys that go along with it.. lol… I’ll look on Facebook marketplace.

Hey do what I did and look for a free or cheap PC and ask friends for any used GPUs or PCs. My PC cost me $50 and runs 3 screens easily.

Nope, it's a slight variation of the Williams widebody plans....which are on mjrnet. Mines a custom ultra wide to fit my tv. Should fit a 48" lg OLED c2.

These videos have inspired me to make my own pinball cabinet, and the detail and info is top notch! If I’m someone that has a fear of electrical issues trying use my own terminal blocks and stuff…. Can I use the appropriate d/c adapters for things like the amps and lights with an extension cord in the cabinet? Or do I need to do the advanced electrical stuff here? Thank you again!!!

Awesome! Glad you're enjoying the series and I have been able to get you into it. Honestly, just start with the screens, a PC, and baller installer. Have fun installing/playing tables and then figure out a cabinet. You could just stop there if you wanted. However, all the extra toys and ssf is the cool stuff. I tear pinball machines apart all the time. If they are junk and not worth saving. My Xenon had a nice cabinet but the table was literally black and the bottom was "burned" like it had been in a fire. Or old Atari pinball machines that were gosh awful anyway. I saved the playfields for artwork. It does take a long while to build these and get them working with motors and gears and knockers but in the end you will have hundreds of machines in one instead of one machine that will require maintenance and fixing and board troubleshooting and switch fixing and waxing and cleaning and modding. I just want to play a game and go back to my day.

Is this your hobby or do you do this for work? I haven't messed with pinball cabinets yet but I did try to find a fixer upper for this vpin cab.....just couldn't find any cheap and they were all fully working so I couldn't do it. Yeah I hear ya about just wanting to play, I've been putting a bunch of time into fx3 on my ps4....easy to play while I build the real thing. Thanks for the watch!

This video is part of a series on how to build a virtual pinball cabinet. This video was the parts I am using and a little bit of info of why and where I got them/how much they are. There will be more videos explaining everything you need to know about installing and setting up the cabinet. The button kit and plunger kit is from Virtuapin. The plunger kit is a Williams original plunger with a kl25z board and sensor tube to detect analog movement and convert to digital movement in the game. The board also allows nudge to be set up in the game. Did you have some specific questions you had about the parts?

Cool dude! What Gottlieb cabinet is it? Yeah I'm still a ways away from making mine but there will be a video soonish. I just ordered my 16 gauge brushed stainless steel sheet and I will wait until the cabinet is assembled and standing on legs, that way I have my exact dimension to go off of.

That sounds cool, I am just going to use a wireless game controller with the dongle plugged in underneath the cab in a usb pass through socket. That way the cab will look clean and no extra buttons/joysticks. Interested to see your idea though. Cheers!

Yup the parts start to add up plus shipping and taxes and duty. That's why I didn't buy the lockdown bar and receiver, those items alone were like $500 CAN so I made them. Either way, don't let the cost of part stop ya, you can always buy slowly over time so the $1500 doesn't seem like much. Remember, you are trying to build an $8,000 vpin cabinet so you're saving a lot of money overall. Good luck on your build!

@@wayofthewrench I am in central Wisconsin. Really nice here as well. I was actually long distance dating a girl living in Vancouver, so in 2018 and 2019 I think I visited 6 times. I was actually there enough that I knew my way around downtown pretty well. Any time I see Vancouver on TV I recognize places I have been to. Thanks for the cool pinball build videos. I hope to have a virtual pinball machine and a sweet arcade in the mancave soon. I have woodworking tools, metal working tools, CNC router and mill. Just no time.

Finish watching the video....the total for all of the parts is $1,500 and yes I am doing SSF with exciters. I just finished installing them and they are amazing. If you're wanting contactors or solenoids, it would only be a hundred or 2 more. Everything else is needed for a budget 1080p build.

Ya know, I'm a pretty complex guy despite my rough exterior....lol. Ya sometimes I have other people or I have to film when and how I can because of how the shop is and my stoopid hectic schedule. I hope you can still hear me as I spend a metric ton of time filming/editing to ensure my videos are as good as I can get for you guys. I think sometimes I play with my voice levels a little because I do that a lot as a teacher too. Thanks for the watch!

Great info so far and enjoyed your other videos. Do you need a KL25Z to control everything?

Thanks bruh! You need something to convert the button presses into something the pc can recognize. You could use a ipac usb controller for this too but the kl25z also does nudging and plunger control. There are other boards too if you want to have other ( more) outputs like rgb buttons, solenoids, flashers, shaker motors etc. I'm planning on doing as much as I can with the kl25z board and go from there.
