Engines like these are amongst my favorite to shoot a video about. Especially that KrAZ is something really really cool and that Tatra - I have a soft spot for Tatra since it is almost like a home manufacturer. Which one do you love the most? Don't forget to follow my IG and FB @visioracer

YaMZ isn't an unusual engine. I have the V6 236 n/a variant in my truck. It weighs a bit over 800kg by itself. Originally, 238 and 236 engines were designed for big Kirov tractors, but were quickly adapted for automotive use. The n/a variants are used in the army and prized for their high torque and good durability. The turbo variants have much higher horsepower and are found in MAZ trucks and some Kirov tractors.

One thing that most people don't know about steam engines is they develop all the torque at basically zero rpm (much like an electric motor does). This is ideal for a heavily loaded vehicle such as a truck, or a freight train for that matter. Glad you included #2!

KrAZ-255 was and still is one of most legendary Soviet trucks of all time. Very favorable in our military during Soviet times, but more so in logging today. For its class, its weight capacity, fording ability and powerful engine (plus Soviet construction) makes them hard to kill. They just keep going.

These days, I drive a MAZ 5440A5 with Euro 3 variant of the KrAZ engine, the YaMZ 658. For a Yaroslavl V8, it is very economical, producing better fuel economy than many equivalent European engines of the '90s. Reliability is also good, provided, as with everything, you keep up with proper servicing. The engine previously used in this model of truck was the YaMZ 7511, a Euro 2 engine with fully mechanical high pressure fuel pump. Those engines are less fuel efficient, but far simpler in construction, and come with either single piece engine heads (considered stronger) or individual cylinder heads (considered much easier to maintain). All variants are still widely in use today.

Yes. The UK was prominent in truck manufacture in the early 20th century. I could cite a dozen marque names. Today, not a single truck is manufactured in the UK. Part of the reason for the decline was joining the EU (common market), imo.

Those old steam trucks looked a bit of a handful to drive. The cab must have been nice and warm in winter though, despite it being open, but unbearable on a hot summers day. Those Tatras though are something else. I never get bored of watching those trials on KZfaq, with the giant 6 and 8 wheeled trucks, wading through deep water, then charging up these ridiculously slippery and muddy slopes, that a Land Rover would struggle with. It's a pretty impressive sight, especially when you see the clouds of black smoke, coming from their thunderous diesel engines!

Yes there is some cool engines you left out . The Deutz air cooled v-12 and the tried and true V 12 and V16 Detroit diesels . Thank you for the great video.

Commercial vehicle designers in Britain were drinking some very strong tea to come up with the vehicles in this video. "Yeah let's just invent the heavy haulage lorry in the 1930s with a steam engine, none of that internal combustion nonsense" "You know what'd make a nice smooth engine for our trucks and vans? An opposed piston 3 cylinder." I don't have any shade for the Foden. That thing is beaut.

Great video. The one mistake I noticed was you called the Tatra a v10 instead of v12. Great engines man. Thanks for the info.

he reminds me of Fidel Castro in 1950, all we need is a Commie Cap and the uncanny resemblance will be completed! he can go Cuba anytime and enter the polls for the next Presidency as soon as Raul retires

The torque numbers on those steam tractors can be something else, I saw one on Jay Leno‘s garage that might’ve had 200 hp if that but thousands of pounds of torque! Thanks for the videos, cheers!!

KRAZ (КРАЗ) was designed and built in Soviet Ukraine. With little modifications trucks are still in production, competing with Soviet/Russian URAL trucks.

Seriously? This truck was originally called YaAZ - because it was produced in Yaroslavl, Russia. Later, production was moved to Ukraine. And the engines are still being made in this city and is called YaMZ. The author of the video correctly named the engine!

@@user-xt4zm5sg2j That's not true for at least past 5 years. Since 2015, KrAZ has stopped purchasing materials and spare parts from Russian manufacturers altogether, abandoning their engines, steel, electrical equipment, forgings, rubber products, bearings, etc.
