In this episode we visit Ólafsfjörður, a small Icelandic town surrounded by mountains and the home of 800 people close by the Arctic Circle. It's no easy way to visit this town for sure.

Don´t be so sure, I grew up in this little town, and it’s absolutly on the edge of civilisation…and the mountain road was horrible, specifically during the winter. I once got stuck up there between two avalanches at the top, and had to be rescued by the local search and rescue group. That was no fun☹️ Anyway, it’s a beautiful little place that I visit every summer, the midnight sun is spectacularly beautiful if you hike up the old mountain road

I fell in love with Olafsfjoður many years ago on my 1st trip to Iceland - even if I just went past it quite quickly. 2nd time I had almost no time to stop either... but this place touches me deeply, even if I don't know why. Perhaps because it's so icelandic, living up there is such inhospitable conditions... no wonder people are hard. As Grimsey's house seems to have been sold, Olaffjoður is probably my 1st choice if could finally live in Iceland. Of course Siglufjorður looks nicer, touristy... and Disneyish! As always, massive THANKS for the video! And, happy new year!

Incredibly remote and what a treacherous journey (even today with the tunnels) when the weather is bad. I can't quite understand such huge expense on the road infrastructure when this place was traditionally accessed via the sea - wouldn't it be better to improve the coastal access, and cheaper to buy everyone a decent boat (like we community cycles in big cities these days). If a community can't naturally prosper in a given location, won't people relocate naturally? Let nature take its course over blasting away mountains for roads at incredible cost.

Wonderfully-crafted post: thank you JI. The problem with not wishing to live in places with a GEOLOGICAL or VOLCANIC risk, is that you would avoid some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Think of the Bay of Naples, and the Amalfi Coast, or the Tengger Caldera in Indonesia. What of Seattle and Mount Rainier? Sicily has its second largest city, Catania, sitting on the slopes of Etna. The problem is that 'Earth-time' is so much more extensive than the human lifespan of one individual; that assessing 'risk' can be difficult, even with the modern sciences to help us.

Another great video from Just Icelandic! Another coincidence with my summer 2021 travel and the decision to skip N1 road after Akureyri and go North. Amazing road with amazing views. Unfortunately we didn't camp anywhere there and that's a goal for 2022 summer. For anyone coming to Iceland, I recommend at least two weeks with planned camps and lots of hiking around campsites. I've seen groups of travelers traveling for a month and that's adventurous and exciting but expensive of course.

Great video again! I can see the good and bad sides about tourism as well. Maybe it's better if some towns are not flooded by tourists. Tourism is important of course, but a country shouldn't rely too heavily on it either. Do people in Ólafsfjörður mainly work in their own village, or do they commute to other towns?

I disagree with you on this. I get sick sometimes on KZfaq when so many of the videos are so short. They seem to be made for people with very short attention spans and often end up being too superficial. Sometimes it's nice to hear somebody talking for a bit longer.
