Nice " 03 ". Where I lived in New York state. There was a USMC reserve armory across the street from my grandmother's house. I use to like hanging around in the armory. One day I went in and the people were taking " 03s" from storage racks and putting them into large crates. They were being turned in. This was around 1959. The reserve used Garands. My uncle had joined this reserve outfit right after high school in 1940. His company was in the 1st Battallion, 5th Marine Regiment. They were activated and the battallion was eventually became the 1st Marine Raiders. On August 7 1942 my uncle landed on an island, Tulagi. Which was 20 miles away from Guadalcanal. The fight for Tulagi took two days, no Japanese taken prisoner. My uncle was KIA the first day. My reason for the story is because those " 03s" were carried on that island and when I carried two rifles to the crate, I kept wondering did I get to hold the rifle my uncle carried. Those rifles almost had black wood from oil and the metal finish were very worn, no rust. I have wondered what happened to those " 03s" and when I come across a rifle I wonder might it be my uncle's.

Great video.. very informative. Is there a way to find out if that Springfield 1903 was used in the Philippines during the American administration/ pacification campaign with the locals here during that era? I would love to get one myself and own a piece of history (but I gathered from your discussion it's only open to US citizen-which is unfortunate). Same thing with the M1 Garand. More power to your channel.

Your 1903 has a Pederson device cut on the left side of the receiver. Those were actions manufactured especially for the device, but were later used in WWII for m1903 rifles. Not very common.

I would like to see the store some day , but coming from Kansas City it will take awhile . I would also like to get the 1903 , 1903-A3, & the Grarand . I did purchase from a local gun shop a United States Rifle .30 Caliber Model 1917 , Winchester ( made a video) . I had gone to the last gun show of the year here and passed on a low serial number 1903 & a 1903-A3 by National Ordnance . I will keep looking , thanks for the video , got a nice rifle & accessories

@markbrennan1393
@markbrennan1393 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, all the Springfield 1903 Mark 1 rifles were built to accept the Pederson Device. Also, that bayonet he bought more than likely will only fit on an M1 Garand and be a very tight fit on the 1903. If you do get it on the 1903 it will be a tight and just drop off when you shoot it.
@kmitchellw9ln
@kmitchellw9ln 3 жыл бұрын
It is an M1905 bayonet and will fit both rifles just fine. They designed them that way because both rifles were used in WW2. The difference being that the WW1 bayonet was a standard 16" long bayonet while in WW2 they decided the shorten the bayonet to 10". Most of the existing stock of 16" bayonets were shortened to 10". The one he has in the video was not a cut down it was the standard 10" bayonet.

@@kmitchellw9ln I have a 16 inch bayonet from WWII and it only snaps into place on my M1 Garand. I own a 1903 and an 03 A3, and it will mount on the barrel, but its an incredibly tight fight and doesn't snap into place. I've seen that with a lot of the longer bayonets.
@kmitchellw9ln
@kmitchellw9ln 3 жыл бұрын
@@markbrennan1393 I have a bayonet that had that problem. First, I made sure the bayonet lug was clean and free of nicks on the edge. Next, I disassembled the handle. Cleaned and lubricated the mechanism inside that locked it into place and it worked much better.

@@kmitchellw9ln thanks for the info I'll give it a try. A few of mine have had the bayonet lug re parked which could be the reason it's so tight as well.
