Laura, see about buying a prototyping "breadboard" kit for your electronic experiments. You can build, teardown and modify your ideas to your hearts content until it works like you want to. It won't keep you from failing but you'll recover quicker and move ahead with your ideas.

Hi, Laura! Usually you don't want to use potentiometer to control speed because you loose power that way. What you could look into is pwm controller which basically runs on/off signal to the motor very fast. This frequency controls speed without loosing power. PWM can be bought as a ready to use device or assembled on 555 chip + couple of diods and transistor. Tutorials are plenty. Anyway, nice vlog and videos, carry on and have a nice day!

I have a cheap slider rail I bought from ebay and to move it I am using geared 30rpm 12v motor from china(10 euro) with a 10am 12v speed pwm comtroller (10 euro) linked to a couple of switches one for direction the on off and a 12v alarm lead acid battery (15 euro). To move on the track I am using some gt2 cnc belt and pulleys from Germany, again about (10 euro). It will be interesting to see what you come up with. I used to use the motor out of an old cordless drill

For the camera slider you definitely want a PWM speed controller rather than a resistive controller. Also look into the simple circuit to make it reversible (DPDT switch, and easy to add in limit switched). You also really want a gearing system for the motor so you can use a weaker motor with fewer problems. To power it you can salvage 18650 Lithium cells from old laptop batteries, much much better than a crappy 9v battery.

Modest Mouse is great, haven't listened to them in a long time. I think you will need a lot more power than a 9V battery to run your slider (only about 3Watt), you could try using old laptop chargers (19V/2A) or printer powersupplies (12V/2A), also there are some PWM controlled motor-regulators on ebay with variable input voltage rated for 2-3A which should be enough. Hope this helps. I built a timelapse-slider myself but used a stepper-motor and an arduino to control it, along with a 12V Blei-Gel Akku (don't know the english word ;)) but for camera movement in video that would be overkill and too loud. grüße aus bonn, Christoph

In AUS, for "potentiometer" we say "POT" for short. Not sure, but going by the video it kinda looks like your soldering could use a few tips. Make sure the surfaces of both the wire and tag or whatever your are trying to solder together are very clean. Obviously you are using resin core solder? If not, need to flux the job. And please use eye protection. Soldering accidents are rare, but a splat of hot solder in the eye can be devastating and it does happen more often than most people realize. Anyway, hope you have fun. Regards, Dave Kahlbaum. Adelaide South Australia.
@Centar1964
@Centar1964 7 жыл бұрын
The POT is too small to control the current to that motor, the addition of just 1 power transistor would make it right...a Darlington type would be a perfect fit.

You might consider using a variable speed drill or some of it's parts for your camera dolly. If you could find a use one for cheep like ones you already have then you would not have to pay for a battery. For short I call a potentiometer a POT but you did well pronouncing it.

Hey Laura, try modifying an old model servo they run on 5-9V and are pretty strong due to many internal gears. Also they are cheap (chinese ones start at 5€) and you might be able to trade one in for free at a local model hobby shop for a favor on you lathe ;-). To modify unscrew the housing and take out the potentiometer and electric, just leave the motor and reconnect two wires to it . Sometimes you need to break of a small mechanical endstop. Any questions you can ask me back in german as well :)

@SimonE-fz5pc
@SimonE-fz5pc 8 жыл бұрын

Goto an auto wrecking yard and buy a windshield wiper motor OR an automatic car radio antenna motor. As they operate on 12v dc, powering them is easy AND they have lots more torque when used with a potentiometer (speed controller) than the little gutless tape deck motor you were using in this video.

+Raphioso upvoted for the scraps vs. scratch clarification, which I would have posted in a similar way otherwise. Then I read the rest of your comment and thought that's worth another upvote or two... So if anybody reads this who doesn't know German: Raphioso not only provided excellent language advice, but also shared some (very understandable) knowledge that might help with Laura's technical problems. Raise your thumbs, people!

HA!! Isaak Brock (singer) has been known for that sort of thing... he drinks a little much sometimes. Good record though! I kinda lost touch with them. They went a little pop and then off the radar. Question: What are your top 5 favorite youtube channels? I don't mean "Maker" channels but just in general. I use youtube for inspiration on new projects and like to see what other people have found. Keep up the fantastic work!

Schon mal über ein Getriebe nachgedacht? Aus einem Modellauto oder so? Allerdings gilt hier: je mehr Kraft, desto weniger Geschwindigkeit. Ansonsten hilft nur mehr Strom...

Laura, you should really look at using a 555 timer to do the motor speed control. The circuit is simple. www.electroniccircuitsdesign.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/main/img/555-timer-dc-motor-driver.jpg you can get the parts pretty much from any supply place and they will be dirt cheap.

Laura, you seem to have the Maker Movement energy in you. Look up a device called "Arduino" . Millions of creators are using the Arduino platform micro controller to control lighting and camera slides with no limits to the possibilities.

If want to control the motor speed without losing power you will need to connect a transistor or a driver like the l293d wich is reversible. Link to do diagram www.electroons.com/8051/electroons/images/ckt_mtr.jpg

I've not heard 'made from scrap' as an expression. I've always said and heard 'made from scratch' or 'scratch made'. :) Especially when it comes to cooking. I.e. this cake is scratch made...which means that you didn't buy it or buy a boxed mix from the store. But this might be a southern U.S. expression. english.stackexchange.com/questions/39551/where-does-the-saying-made-from-scratch-originate

If you made it out of scrap wood you could say "Made from scraps" but "made from scratch" is similar to saying it is hand made. English is hard. Idiomatic English is really hard. :) Examples: www.made-from-scratch.com/ www.wcpo.com/news/insider/dayton-ky-schools-food www.wcpo.com/news/insider/tela-bar-kitchen-offers-pub-grub-made-from-scratch-in-wyoming

I don't really get in details, but I'm 60 years old, I love to work with my hands, I'm a tradesman (maintenance fitter) and here in Australia trade people get paid well, so doing these type of things (craft) can be tough. But I love the way that you do things, you seem to be a very nice young lady! Keep it up
