Now that I'm [mostly] settled into life in New York City, I have started my first week of graduate school at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. It was a crazy hectic week, but I tried to chronicle it for you here! During my first week, I adjusted more to life in Manhattan, learned about "the Core" curriculum that I'm in, and celebrated the end of the week with a Statue of Liberty Cruise.
Let me know if you have any questions about Mailman, public health, premed life, or AMWA in the comments down below. And be sure to tell me how your first weeks of school went! I know it was probably a few weeks ago by now but let me know (:

Hey! I'm not technically a student of Columbia's School of Graduate Studies (GSAS) because I'm a student of Columbia's Medical School so I don't know too much about it, but this is the link to the JD/PhD dual-degree program through GSAS, however, I don't see any medical science graduate degree options listed on my brief look through their website. gsas.columbia.edu/degree-programs/dual-degree-certificate-programs/list-dual-degree-certificate-programs/jdphd

How would you compare graduate school to undergrad? I recently got accepted into the MPH program and I'm strongly considering it, but I'm worried about how difficult the transition will be in terms of workload and location since I'm from CA. Also I'm sorry if you answered this already, but what set Columbia apart from any other school you were considering? Thank you for sharing this video :)

Hi Ingrid! I'm sorry it took me a while to get back to you. I think the difference in workload from undergrad to grad school depends on what you studied in undergrad and the program. I was in a rigorous "basic science" type program for undergrad so that included a lot of memorization and out of class studying. Comparing that to my MPH program here, it is very different. For grad school, I have a lot of assignments and the workload is high but outside of those assignments there isn't very much studying the same way I experienced in undergrad. Also, I know a lot of people from California that are in my program so I know that it is doable and you will certainly have a support system of people going through the same thing. As for why I chose Columbia, in short, they had the most resources and the most established program. Hope this helped and maybe I'll see you on campus next year!

I was just admitted to start next semester, and I was wondering how easy or difficult it was to find community within the program and living in NY?

Hi Lorena! First of all, congrats! I find that everyone finds a group during the CORE (first semester) and that "core" group of friends (pun-intended) typically stays very close during the program. But you will also likely become pretty close with the people in your certificate as well (:
