In which Hank is Angry About Stuff, because sometimes you just gotta let it out (and also because, when he asked, Twitter said that they'd prefer him angrily raving than just being funny.)
Rants are a weird thing, I don't think they're particularly healthy, but I do think they're entertaining. The main thing I want to avoid is getting angry at individual people...unless they're endagering others or clearly breaking a social contract (STOP USING YOUR CELL PHONES IN THE MOVIE THEATER!!!)
The first rant video is here: • 17 Rants in 4 Minutes

Where they teach you how to do your taxes, and what things like the IRS do and why they are so scary to people and what happens when they audit you, also who is the they that is doing this. How exactly does credit work and what is a credit score? Also what will make you ACTUALLY stand out on a resume? All those life things that its like ok we should be learning this but we haven't so lets go ruin our lives because we don't know what we're doing.

MC I want that class so bad. My old school was great, one of our first seventh grade projects taught us how to buy a house and determine our down payments and mortgage with our designated annual salaries. We had to consider the purchase of groceries and paying for cars and water bills and we had to work with the money we had and learn how to make sacrifices to support ourselves or our families. The problem with my high school is common core, Our math class real world applications are basically writing me off and telling me I have no hope for to be really successful. Like, we spent a month going over a recurring word problem about how to be a cafeteria lady*, or even go through graphs about teen pregnancy. *This is not to say that I am writing off cafeteria ladies, they can be happy and successful, definitely

Sunwoo Kim Assuming that each year you don't completely change habits or buy a house or something. Go to an accountant or tax specialist. They will ask for relevant info, fill out all the forms for you and send it out for you. This is the important part: they then give you a copy of everything they filled out with all the stuff you gave them. Now you have a guide to do next years taxes all by yourself. You have a list of all the forms you need, what info you require, etc.

Actually, the mitrochondria *are* the powerhouses of the cell. Each one is a mitochondrion. Well, come to think of it there's also Profesor Mitocondria, a character on the Mexican kids' show La CQ, and he's singular. If I keep this up maybe I can get Hank to mention me in a segment on annoying smartasses in a future rant video... If you don't write in cursive how do you sign your name? I sometimes wish I had taken drafting in high school even though nobody does old-school drafting anymore because part of the course was teaching how to print really really fast. I was sick last year and lost a lot of weight by not feeling like fixing myself anything to eat, so when I got desperate enough I'd eat a couple of Oreos, thus inventing the successful Bed Rest and Oreos Diet that produced about the same long-term weight loss as any other diet program. Is this annoying enough to justify a Hank Green rant? If not, what in heaven's name does it take?

Yes! The bit on majors! I'm going to school for Religious Studies (which I was stoked upon learning was one of John's majors). I'm really passionate about my major, but, whenever it comes up, copious amounts of crap fall upon me. Things such as: "Oh, yeah, because that will get you far." or "Oh, so you're trying to learn how to convert people?" or "I'M AN ATHEIST" or "How is that going to contribute to society in any way?" And I want to say, "First of all, I'm NOT religious either, you git! Secondly, you can't think of one.fucking.way in which religious understanding would benefit our species!? And third, I'm sorry that you've been indoctrinated into thinking that a corporate ladder of increasing paychecks every year is the only route to stability or happiness in our society. If you were comfortable with your major, you probably wouldn't be spending so much time giving me crap about mine." Anyway, that's what I had to say....... DFTBA

Religious Studies minor here, with some potentially useless advice on how to describe your situation. While yes, many people who go into Religious Studies may be planning on becoming a pastor/priest/rabbi/Imam etc., a lot of other people don't. I think of it as almost a sort of sociology or anthropology: you're studying religion as a human phenomenon, and one that is an incredibly important facet in a thorough understanding of the human species.

I'm going back to school in the fall to pursue a film production degree. Brb, I need to memorize your rant on majors because yes. My main argument - whenever people ask me what I plan to "do" with a degree like "that" - is: well, have fun coming home from your nine to fine business job and you have no television to watch, no books or magazines or Internet articles to read, or any movies to see on the weekend. Tell me again why storytelling isn't important or useful.

Hircine I am usually fine/happy to answer if they're genuinely interested about it, but when the pose their question as automatically assuming I'm wasting my time/money/energy/life on a "worthless" degree, I get so mad! It's not worthless.
@ChristopherRoss.
@ChristopherRoss. 9 жыл бұрын
***** As someone with an English lit degree, I can say that though not worthless, it is the worst financial decision I have ever made. I'm $40,000 in debt, have nothing to show for it (no job in the field (because unless you're VERY lucky, there ARE no jobs in the field), no practical everyday use etc), I'm accused of pretentiousness and elitism every time I use the tools I learned in school to apply literary criticism to art; and the only upside is that it's made me a much better writer. The catch 22 is that I'm either too strapped for time, or too exhausted from working (in attempting to pay off my student debt, and you know--eat) to get some decent writing done. Its been four years and I'm only 20,000 words into my first book. No, not worthless, but in my case, a poor financial decision.

Chris McCartney Well, that is a very unfortunate situation to be in. I'm still a teenager so you don't have to listen to me or whatever but just don't worry and it's okay if it's taking you forever to write a book. It takes everyone a long time to write a book, especially if it's your first one. I recommend a weekend of doing nothing to unwind and reevaluate the work you're doing and some exercises to increase the speed at which you can type. You'll be alright :). Also, kickstarter is a great way to fund creative projects.

Chris McCartney Hi, current English major here. I wondered how many jobs "in the field" you've looked into. The program at my school stresses the flexibility of English degrees. I know people who are going to law school, and a few of my professors did marketing/other business stuff before going back to school and teaching. So... have you looked into these fields? If not, there might still be hope. Or are my profs exaggerating?

Maddi Page Learning how to do taxes probably would be a good idea for school. But all the other things you said, are, in my opinion, simply things you should learn from your parents. I definetely did. My mother showed me how do to the laundry when I was about ten. And when I got my first car and had to change tires for the first time, my father did it with me.
@UnproductiveSunbeam
@UnproductiveSunbeam 9 жыл бұрын
Fran H Good for you, but a lot of people don't get on well with their parents, or their parents are not around enough to teach these things or there parents are alcoholics\drug addicts or something else that makes it difficult\impossible for them to explain the things everyone expects the children to be able to do. That said trying to explain everything from cooking to laundry to taxes to tire changing to everyone at school could lead to a lot of wasted time. I don't pretend to know the answer but "my parents taught me these things when I was younger why didn't everyone elses" isn't a valid reason to not teach something at school.
@franh3682
@franh3682 9 жыл бұрын
Stanislav I know not everyone has a family life like that. But I just don't think the problem lies within the school system. In my opinion it is not their job to teach "life skills" like that. Primarily it's the parents job. And if for whatever reason parents are not around or inable to teach their kids then there should be social institutions that take care about disadvantaged kids. Of course these can work together with the schools. But as you already said, having a mandatory class about doing laundry etc. would just mean that the majority of children (or at least I hope it's the majority) would be bored to hell in those classes and the already full curriculum only gets fuller.

I am about to graduate with an English degree, and as a result have experienced four years of abuse from STEM people (including professors). It is doubtful that you'll be able to change these irrational opinions but know that you are getting a quality education in a field that you value. My friends in science constantly complain about professors that don't care about their students, but every English professor I have had was willing to bend over backwards so that everyone could excel. Perhaps the application of your degree is not as readily apparent as it is for some of your fellow classmates, but an English degree teaches you to speak and think critically about the world around you and to communicate eloquently. These are highly valuable skills that will surely help you with whatever career aspirations you have. Don't let the haters get you down, and not all STEM people will be condescending. If they insult your major its an indication of their own insecurities and has nothing to do with you.

JANA VLOGS The problem is that many people understand "literally" to mean what the dictionary says it means, so when you use it in a way that is different from the dictionary definition, they literally don't know what you mean, and not understanding what someone means is very frustrating. Why do you hate that people get frustrated by something that is understandably frustrating? Also, I don't think that you literally "hate" when people get annoyed. I think you are using a colloquial meaning of "hate" which is different from the dictionary definition, which is frustrating because now I am not sure how you actually feel. JANA VLOGS Erm no, nobody is redefining anything in this case, because the word "literally" is used as a hyperbole (I guess the confusion stems from the fact that the word "literally" is used figuratively). Words suddenly changing their meaning to the exact opposite would be pretty stupid... but this is not the case with "literally".
@OneBigBug
@OneBigBug 9 жыл бұрын
JANA VLOGS Language is defined by humans for the purpose of communication. I don't complain about people using "literally" for hyperbole because they're not allowed to change the meaning of words. Certainly, "literally" has been used for ages for hyperbole, and even if it hadn't, you're right to say that language can change. The reason I complain is because I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS LITERAL. If you take all the good words for "literally" and give them two meanings, then I can't express myself properly, which means that language has lost the function it is intended for. If I am *literally* going to kill someone, then I want that to be understood separate from "I am going to kill him for spilling my drink". That's an important concept to be able to express.

I understand that learning to do your taxes is important, don't get me wrong. Learning to do your taxes in school would be a great idea. My point is that we still need kids to be taught to do basic algebra at a young age. If I didn't start learning algebra at secondary school I would never be able to solve differential equations at this age. Unfortunately this means that some people who won't need to use it in their lives will have to learn it.

(I know this is a super old thread) That's the thing. The problem with school is that it is a one size fits all. It was established during the industrial era where children are packaged for factories, mines, etc. Yet we are still using the basic structure of the school system to this day. Thank goodness that schools have electives where you can choose some of your courses based on your interests, but I feel like it should be available at elementary and middle school too, not just high school. Not everyone is going to use the knowledge of solving quadratic equations, but inevitably there will be students who will use it regularly. Same goes for many other subjects in school. Why are students required to take classes in a language other than English in high school? Quite some people will definitely benefit from it, but I see no use because I will just forget everything because I will never use it again.

@@GraceChen-clay-charms-rock (I know this is a super old thread.) I think it's because when you're young, you really don't know what you're going to want to do when you're much older. I see the value in having a foundation for a wide array of things. When you're 11, you might think science is the last thing you'd be interested in, but by the end of the year, you might love biology. At 10 you might think you'd love to be an author one day--within a few years' time you might have lost that interest (and also found out that you hated English class), and you'd be glad that you have so many other options open for you. I think one nice thing about school is that it tries not to box young people into overly specific niches that they may detest being in when they're older. Your point about wanting electives in elementary school--my question is, how is an 8-year-old supposed to know whether they want to be an engineer one day without having a good experience in maths and physics?

My family has always insisted that I chose English lit because it is an "easy degree." However, ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHOVE SEND THAT openly admit they were never good at English in school, they aren't good writers, and they really don't read often. At this point I'm taking 3 lit classes in one semester, with reading lists that have a minimum of 6 novels/essays/short stories each and my assignments are all writing and analyzing. Now how could that POSSIBLY be the "easy degree?!"

I missed reading and writing so I added a double major in liberal arts to my engineering degree. It was nice having all of these literature analysis classes that added no real workload to my semesters. If english is something you like doing, it's not difficult. ozziewithanie Personally, I don't want to spend the rest of my life saying that I "extremely dislike that unintellectually skilled, distasteful person" just because someone might be upset that I used a word. Language is meant to clearly and effectively communicate ideas, and a person who is listening is much more likely to understand if I say I hate that stupid asshole. Political correctness is good to me only so long as it doesn't obfuscate language. I'm not going to go around spouting slurs, but I will absolutely dismiss someone who wants me to stop saying 'stupid' or some other common and essential word.

amanda cooper Yeah I agree with this. I'm also more likely to go more out of my way for people I care about than for people I don't know (I'm not perfect ahahaha). But obviously that doesn't apply for slurs (which I don't use anyway? but I obviously don't know every slur ever). I think it's important to recognize why some words are problematic though, even if we don't necessarily stop using them. I find this to be an issue which causes me great cognitive dissonance....

***** Of course the internet is a great tool to buy and sell things, but what I think Hank is referring to is that sometimes a marketing department will notice that an online creator has an engaged and enthusiastic community of followers, and want to milk that for every penny. It doesn't matter how the community was formed, what they stand for, or what value the community is creating for itself and the world. They fail to see that being part of an online community creates genuine connections to others, and if they only see it as a tool for profit, it means that they haven't even tried to understand. Those who do understand online communities (like the Vlogbrothers) will never try to profit at the expense of the community, because they not only appreciate the beauty and power (of Nerdfighteria) but also realize that it's precisely because of their genuine care that the engaged and enthusiastic community exists in the first place. And it shows in the way they run businesses like DFTBA Records. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this interpretation of Hank's views!

Rant on the taxes rant: One of my number one pet peeves is when people say schools should teach taxes instead of teaching how to solve a quadratic equation (this happens more often than you might think). Solving a quadratic equation is not about learning how to factor or complete the square or apply the quadratic formula; it instead presents students with a simple task that helps them develop problem solving skills to complete other simple tasks (like paying taxes). Think about it: to solve a quadratic equation you have to a) recognize what kind of problem you're dealing with (hmm...I'm looking for x and x squared is the highest power here) b) frame the problem in a familiar context (put it in the form Ax^2 + Bx + C = 0) c) choose which tool you have available that will work best (this seems hard to factor, so I should use the quadratic formula) d) apply said tool and check your result (plug the x values back in and make sure it works out) To pay your taxes with no prior knowledge you have to: a) recognize it's time to pay taxes (whether it's Jan-April for most people, or the end of the quarter/year if you have a different fiscal year) b) put it into familiar context (remember how you get paid, whether you're married, own a business, have children, etc) c) choose a tool available (if you're old school you can go to the library, or you can read your state and country's web how to guide, or just use turbotax like everyone else) d) Apply the tool and check your result (get a letter from the IRS with a check or a bill) You can use this same method to solve most problems with non-creative solutions. My main complaint with quadratic equations is that I think people should have to derive or prove the quadratic formula in order to learn how to create a general solution to a certain type of problem, which is the next level of problem solving. That's how we end up with things like tax software, which requires much less time and thinking out of the user.
@GiuliaSocolof

kaitlin menzie True, but there are probably better ways to teach effective problem-solving skills other than making kids memorize the quadratic formula. Although, I will say that as an advanced math student I use the quadratic formula quite often and it's pretty helpful.

Giulia Socolof well, sure, you are a math student. Im in the last year of engineering, and in engineering problems (aka real world stuff) the amount of non-quadratic equations is just so overwhelmingly large that if i forgot right now how to solve them, it would not affect in any perceivable way the work I do. So, hey, maybe knowing the solution to quadratic equations helps the 1%, but 99% of the kids DO NOT NEED TO KNOW IT.

I would have seen this as soon as it was posted, but I was watching Crash Course Astronomy about Saturn... Cursive should be an elective in school. Treat it like a foreign language. Or an Art class, which is closer to what it is. You want to prepare kids for the real world? Teach typing. (Or coding). Personally, I like Hank Jokes a lot more than Hank Rants. Maybe next time.

some person An herb common in Latin American/Mexican cuisine. There is actually a gene with a side-effect of controlling how much one thinks this herb tastes like soap, as Michael Aranda's 23andMe results mentioned. Personally, I have to have cilantro with other flavors or else it just plain tastes bitter. Not soapy, just bitter.

This is how I feel about clocks... When I was gone junior, a couple 7th graders told me they could only read digital clocks.. That really shocked me but they were convinced they wouldn't need to able to tell the time on any other type of clock..

Abby Johnson Yeah that's where I learned it too, and at home as well...Maybe they just didn't pay attention in kindergarten :b But even if for some weird reason they weren't taught how to read the clock in school, their parents really should have taken care of that..still baffles me to this day haha

Why. Just why. I'm pretty sure there are calculators in the real world, right? And even if you don't have a calculator, almost every phone nowadays has av built-in calculator. The only reason to learn division is to understand the mechanics, but after that point there is literally no reason to keep hammering it into kids' heads like they're going to have to do this in real life.

Sahil Dev (Math teacher here) The way kids are being taught division is actually changing a lot now! So the emphasis is on what it actually means to divide instead of the algorithm, since knowing the concept is actually useful when you get to algebra and calculus and the algorithm is not at all. So YAY!

Thank you for that humanities rant! I always felt belittled by many other majors simply because I had chosen English over the many other majors I could have chosen. Bear in mind everyone that people pick majors because they're good at that subject AND because they enjoy it. Just because I didn't choose to become an engineer doesn't mean I couldn't have.
@michaelkelly7379
@michaelkelly7379 6 жыл бұрын
To be fair the vast majority of engineering majors change majors because they couldn't handle the course load / failed a class 2/3 times in a row and were forced to change majors. There are a lot of people that "couldn't have".

I don't normally like rant videos, but yours are awesome! And I have to agree with you on cursive writing. I was in 2nd grade at a school that taught cursive in 3rd grade. Then my family moved and I started 3rd grade at a school that taught cursive in 2nd grade. So, I was always behind, my cursive was always sloppy, I hated it, and now the only cursive I write is my signature.

1.) I use cursive on a daily basis. I read it on a daily basis. Your experience with it is not defining factor. The n is too small. I've never used my knowledge that the earth travels around the sun. It is an unimportant fact for the vast majority of people on the planet. That doesn't mean that it is worthless and should not be taught. 2.) While derogatory and oppressive language should be avoided to act like a decent human being, we should not go so far as to insist on the censoring of others due to our own feelings of inadequacies thus traveling down the road of Fahrenheit 451. And we should not look to tumblr for info on what constitutes derogatory and oppressive language.

Regarding number 2 - People who try to censor others are solely using the internet to determine what oppressive speech is, without developing that feeling themselves. I think Hank is referencing people who genuinely feel uncomfortable with certain phrases.
@amiablehacker
@amiablehacker 5 жыл бұрын
And regarding number 1 - Cursive lettering can be typed so unless you have to handwrite everything, not everyone needs it? If something is job specific and only job specific, it should be included in job training/college, not taught in schools. Understanding our position in the universe isn't really a fair comparison in my opinion.

It's a severely outdated skill that we teach to children out of tradition instead of giving them useful abilities like being able to do taxes, knowing how to cook, or understanding computers. Handwriting in general is becoming obsolete. Cursive should have died years ago.
