Evermore (song) is about the time after she was "cancelled" in 2016 and she thought her career was over. She was catching her "Death". The motion capture was the illegal edited phone call Kanye and Kim recorded. She was depressed and filled with Anxiety. Marjorie is one of those songs that I can only listen to if I've prepared myself ahead of time. The line "Should've kept every grocery store receipt, because every scrap of you would be taken from me" breaks me every time without fail. I still have my mom's last grocery list on my bedside table, nearly 15 years after she died, just so I can remind myself of her handwriting. It's a beautiful song, but man it hurts.

In evermore (the song) the change in pace is the breakthrough moment. Before she is stuck in the pain - motionless. Then a memory of him changes it all - 'and when I was shipwrecked, I though of you. In the cracks of light I thought of you. It was real enough to get me through. and I swear, you were there. ' and from there, back to resolution, but this time peace.

In my head when evermore switches up I can just see a music video situation. Taylor is in bed grieving and then she hears the piano playing in another room. She immediately throws the covers off and starts running to the sound (seeing flashbacks of the dude playing) and then when she turns the corner, she sees an empty piano bench and there is no music playing.. That visual the tempo change gives me makes evermore one of my favorites.

It is an album that seems to talk about time, distance and deterioration. I liked it a little more than Folklore because Taylor's narrative skill is more varied and mature. I know that many find it fun to constantly relate Taylor's personal life to each of her songs, but it is much better not to know anything and interpret them for yourself, make them your own or enjoy them like a storybook.

Taylor said that Evermore was a product of not wanting to stop the collaboration of Folklore. They’re not B-sides or throwaways but it’s a random collection of songs that push into more experimental territory without being a cohesive album. A lot of these songs are really challenging and require multiple listens before they sink into you. This is not Taylor doing pop songs. Once again, many are stories that she made up based on what she was ingesting during lockdown. She said that she wrote Tolerate It after reading the novel “Rebecca”. But of course her own feelings bubble up and become part of the stories. Because she’s an empathetic human who relates to other humans. I think Happiness is the most mature song she has ever written. It could be inspires by her friend’s story or anything else she’s experienced. It’s amazing.

I like the fact that "tis the damn season" and "dorothea" are the same story written from 2 perspectives - the song "dorothea" is from the guy's perspective, and "tis the damn season'" is from the girl's. CONEY ISLAND is a masterpiece, it has many layers and has even been performed with physically absent parents. COWBOY LIKE ME is about 2 con artists in high society who manipulate the rich to get benefits from them, two lonely souls who when they meet, they fall in love, taking the risk that everything could end badly. DOROTHEA may be talking about friendship through time, if you don't identify with it you can simply take it as a story from a storybook. With CLOSURE I am glad that the intention and essence that the artist wanted to capture was understood, but if you still don't like it, it is completely respectable. EVERMORE is a bit of the same thing, the abrupt change can be beautiful, but as a vocal coach it is understandable that you find it uncomfortable. In conclusion, the album is worth listening to more than once and paying attention to every detail, that way it grows on you more and more. Perhaps it's one of the reasons why Taylor's music is so enduring among fans and not simply a fad or trend.

Dorothea is the guy’s perspective from Tis the Damn Season. She ran off to be a star in LA but when she comes home for the holidays she’s willing, or wanting, to hook up with him for the weekend. Folklore came out before evermore and they both came out before Midnights. A big part of evermore is fictional, like folklore. It is popularly thought that Willow, Gold Rush, Cowboy like me, Long story short, Marjorie, Closure, Evermore and It's Time To Go are more diaristic to Taylor, Closure and It's Time To Go being about her label/album re-record situation, Long Story Short and Evermore being about the downfall of her reputation and Marjorie being about her late grandmother who was an opera singer and who's voice is heard in the outro. Happiness is an interesting one, some people believe it is about Scott Borchetta, her former label owner and friend, but there are also people who think she wrote it about her friend Abigail's divorce. 'Tis the damn season and Dorothea are about the same story, but from both perspectives. Of course, because Taylor wrote everything it's very possible that some songs express feelings she has had at some point in her life, even if they aren't 100 % diaristic. And also, of course, we don't know any of this for sure, but this is what we think we've figured out.

5:04 erm actually *pushes up my nerd glasses* folklore came before evermore by 5 months, so she isn’t “teasing the next album” which is confusingly the album before

Most of evermore and folklore isn’t about her personal life rather tales she’s spun into these beautiful songs, most if not all of them are unrelated to her personally

evermore itself was an acquired taste for me too but it’s now easily in my top Taylor songs of all times. You should check out her interview with Zane Lowe bc she explains this song with just enough detail for it to really come alive. As for the bridge, the lines “whether weather be the frost or the violence of the dog days, I’m on waves out being tossed” essentially saying that whether it’s the freezing winter or the hottest of summer days (the dog days), I’m constantly being bashed from all directions (on wave out being tossed) It’s poetry and the back and forth grew on me. Give it time

evermore was actually 3 years before the breakup you keep referencing and it's funny that some of the songs you think it's about Joe Alwyn were actually written with him (under the pseudonym of William Bowery). some other romantic songs such as willow, gold rush and long story short are also believed to be about him, but that's based on references that connect to their storylines. anyway, evermore is mostly ficctional, but I do believe a lot of her experiences and feelings through the pandemic were mirrored in those tales, which makes the title song as the closer so much more poetic and personal.

your reaction to evermore (title track) is soooo valid! i felt the same when the album first came out and it took me so long to appreciate the song!! but i agree how the tempo change comes out of nowhere and how his vocals change the song so much 😭😭

I love the chaos in closure. The way that awful noise keeps fading through the peaceful piano really adds to that “I’m fine, but I’m not really fine” vibe in the song

I take that line in happiness (17:07) meaning more like they're in this relationship, learning life lessons together as a couple, going through the ups and downs together, all the challenges they face in their daily lives.. but slowly you start to realize that problems are only in your expense, you're the only one compromising, or backing off, or getting hurt. It stopped being going through this together to going along knowing it doesn't bother him but wrecks you completely.

That’s so sad, evermore is one of my absolute favorite songs of hers. Bon Iver’s vocals are beautiful, and it fits perfectly for what the song is about. Edit: I actually think if you watched the version she did at the Eras Tour, you would have a whole new opinion on it. She sings the bridge by herself, and it’s one of her best performances ever.

You need to listen to the Evermore the way she performed it at the Eras tour... One of the best surprise song performances for this tour, along with Exile (and a few others but I'm only mentioning those w Justin Vernon that she performed solo)
