fun fact: Aaron Dessner (producer who worked on folklore and evermore) said in a interview that he'd send this track to taylor and she wrote willow in less than 10 minutes, and she was like "we gonna have to make a new album". So folklore sister was born

Maybe it's just me, but I've always taken the "lost in your current like a priceless wine" line to be a clever play on words. Lost in your current - because she starts off talking about ships/water, and also as in the word currant, like what certain wines are made from. You can certainly get lost in both an actual current, and get lost in a bottle of wine - made from currants.

The Internet says that often expensive wines that were being shipped across oceans were lost in shipwrecks. When on the ocean floor they undergo an aging process that makes them highly prized when recovered (this is from Genius, couldn’t figure out how to put a screenshot in the comments).

The witchcraft part could represent reputation era, which was after her downhill fall (I come back stronger than a 90's trend). And even on her lowest he was there to support her. And they ended up walking toward the daylight (which is a song from lover era, right after Rep era. And in the song she sings: threw out our cloaks and our daggers because it's morning now, aka Rep going to lover)

The priceless wine line has multiple levels. Wine lost at sea would "mature" fast under the pressure of the water and become priceless. Also, currant as in grape currant. It has multiple levels.

My interpretation: "I'm like the water when your ship rolled in that night Rough on the surface but you cut through like a knife And if it was an open-shut case I never would've known from that look on your face Lost in your current like a priceless wine" His ship is creating a current that is making her feel lost in it (like how a priceless wine would get lost in a shipwreck). She is falling for him in a way that she doesnt understand, falling in love so strongly that its confusing and making her feel lost in his current.

"lost in your current like a priceless wine" I think is a play on "currant" wine.

I do think this and Invisible String are about her ex Joe Alwyn (the one that she was with for 6 or however many years) because she often referenced the color gold in songs that were referencing him.

Haha, it's from evermore, which was a surprise album that came out a few months after folklore. Basically, they came together to perform the Longpond Studio sessions (Audrey has watched those!) and that night started writing... and kept writing until it turned into an album. So they're both storytelling albums that are a mixture of "folk story" type songs that are allegories for her own life(if you know you'll know and if not they're just fiction), but sonically a little different.

so, about the "lost in your current like a priceless wine" line : I'm not an English speaker so I might be very off here but the way I interpret it is that Tay is saying, life used to be big and full of purpose, with ambitions, big as a massive willow tree, but they bent right to your will. you put everything in a different perspective, and as you say, since the guy was shy almost, staying away from cameras and flashes, I feel like she's saying - all the castles I built were suddenly pointless, I lost interest, you became my point of gravity. I used to think of my life as a priceless wine, rough on the surface, untouchable, now it's lost in your current,you cut through like a knife, you consume me, now I am drifting away, finding myself only when it's in context of you, nothing else that used to make sense, makes sense anymore. I also think her choice of words adds to it. she could've said:"I am a priceless wine lost in your current" or "you are like a current and I am like a priceless wine, lost in it". but no. she treats herself as a simile and him as a metaphor. he IS the current, she is just "like" a priceless wine. I think it's meant to admire him and belittle herself, like a tiny bottle, that has no realistic value in the big ocean. I think it's about shifting perspectives. basically I think this is a song about falling in love so deeply you almost lose a sense of self. it's like almost disturbing or self deprecating, but said out of love.

I love you two!! I know we should not idealize couples, but you two are just couple goals when it comes to partnership and admiration. She is just so comfortable of being her in front of you, and you seem to enjoy each part of her being her (like when she does something and you start laughing and agreeing with your head… almost like “yep, that’s my girl and I made her my wife”) ❤❤❤❤❤

Folklore came out first btw, then Evermore, then Midnights (which just won a Grammy for Album of the Year), and her new album The Tortured Poets Department coming out in April! With a title like that you know it's going to be sad, deep, with amazing lyrics and storytelling. Love your videos!

Willow is from evermore. And evermore is kind of a continuation of folklore. But evermore is more about her life and folklore is a made up story of a teenage love triangel of betty, james, and augustine that she made up in her head like 5 days into lockdown
@elizabethjulia20
@elizabethjulia20 2 ай бұрын
It's so hard for me to find the balance of explaining to people that folklore/evermore are indeed not entirely autobiographical when people are reading into it that way... but also that it's not about her while also being all about her, because the stories are allegories for her personal life. My tears ricochet is about a divorce with an ex at a funeral as far as Taylor describes... but we know it's about her losing her albums. Cardigan is a part of the teenage love triangle... but the music video hints at it being about her holding onto music and her fans who would stand by her until the end. I'm like NO it's not about her don't over read.... but also no no it's not just some fictional breakup. Lol.

@@elizabethjulia20Exactly. As Taylor would say, both of these things can be true. Also interesting that she at first appears to be trapped in that glass case that’s so similar to the Eras Tour cases the past Taylor’s are trapped in during Rep, but she finds a trap door as she cheekily looks at the camera and delivers that “But I come back stronger than a 90s trend” line. Seems like a reference to the masters debacle and Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun stupidly thinking they’d outwitted her.

Also I just wanted to add that cardigan=folklore - invisible string- willow My theory is that Betty in cardigan got James in the end because they are invisible string. Lyrics from cardigan- "But I knew you Playing hide-and-seek and Giving me your weekends... Once in 20 lifetimes, I And when I felt like I was an old cardigan..." "I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired And you'd be standin' in my front porch light And I knew you'd come back to me" Willow- "Every bait and switch was a work of art ("playing hide and seek" ts said in interview that the guy is fickle so she's doing love spell) The more that you say The less I know" (the guy is confusing and could be leading her on) Wherever you stray I follow I'm begging for you to take my hand Wreck my plans That's my man"

I think a lot of the repetition that you are relating to music videos actually has a larger artistic purpose. There are a couple of different approaches in both poetry and music: One can repeat the same line multiple times. This could be a refrain, inclusio, or whole chorus. It's also standard in basic music theory phrase structures like sentences, which use a presentation and a continuation subphrase. The continuation could use fragmentation, which just repeats a fragment of the presentation. The other type is a period, which consists of an antecedent and a consequent. The consequent is a repetition of the antecedent, but in a different intonation - question -> answer. One could use different words/lines every time. In music theory, this might be the development section in a Sonata, in between the exposition and recapitulation, or contrasting sections. The last is absence/minimalism/space. Repetition evokes emotions. Repeating a chorus evokes a different emotion from repeating the same line throughout the whole chorus, or even repeating a verse. Repeating a long line "Are we out of the woods yet, are we out of the woods?" evokes something different from repeating a short line "yes, and?". They have different pacings. All of this is to say that I think Taylor writes her songs to evoke emotions that are easily conveyable through film, and different forms of repetition lend towards this naturally.

I think "That's my man" is repeated 13 times in this song, so that's part of the repetition that you're hearing.

I don't think she's necessarily connecting cardigan and willow, more that she is connecting folklore and evermore, since they are sister albums. With cardigan being from folklore and willow being from evermore. As far as the "lost in your current like a priceless wine" I took to to paint a picture calling back to the first line of a ship. Which just makes me think of ships carrying loot/treasures/etc. and shipwrecks where things get lost out to sea. That's the connection I felt when I listen to those lyrics. She's describing herself as the priceless wine that is lost in his current. I also don't believe this is written for a music video. I feel as though the repetitiveness is done to emphasize a point or an atmosphere, in this case I felt she was repeating the songs to emphasize how she felt about her man, and to show him off and how much she loved him.
