Who am I?
I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 17. I teach from my own studio and via Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. I have been around!
In 2008 I wrote the Vocaltutor Guide, 21 set lessons for singing teachers to get started, learning to teach, and produced 3 vocal exercise CD/Downloads.

Ludi 26 she wasn’t at all..she was sick it makes no sense for her to sing some certain parts of the song and not the rest she was obviously singing the whole time. That’s called background vocals ur hearing

Jakub Lachout oh please. Either people are hateful or just ass kissers. Sia has an odd voice and I remember half of her live performances for “chandelier” were awful. She has Graves’ disease and is a former drunk and addict. Her voice is in worse shape than Mariah Carey’s. People can’t be honest anymore. Sia peaked around “Breathe me” her vocals were still clear then. They have seriously deteriorated. I hope she gets better.

I just think she should have been allowed to back out of performing. Imagine how painful it must have been, singing with such a hoarse voice. I'm getting tonsilitis from just listening to her singing.

What's heartbreaking is that she has a genetic disorder that's deteriorating her voice, among other things. Might not be the cause of the problems in this performance, but it's such a shame.

I love Sia's reaction to the failed notes, like *oh shit* 😂 she's so down to earth and honest and knows from the beginning of the performance it's going to be not good. Every artist has those days, specially when you're on promo tour with songs like Chandelier, such a hard track to sing every day. I think it's still a likable performance cuz of her personality, she saved it with humor. 😅👍🏻

She still slayed while under the weather. Most artists wouldn't perform sick so I'll take my hat off her for not disappointing her fans by canceling. She's amazing.

I was a bit upset that you chose this performance, but after what you said I'm actually pretty happy that you got it right. She was super sick that day, didn't want to miss it for all the fans that came, and she'll never lip it. She just gave it all she had that day for the fans. She's such a true artist and person. She also said she cried a lot that day because of it. What a beautiful soul. When she's healthy she's killing it tho!

Guys, this is part of Georgina's series about "What Went Wrong?" So of course she is going to take a performance where something went wrong and analyze it! I see a lot of comments saying, why would you react to a bad performance? But I think that's actually the whole point of this series- to kindly but honestly discuss what can go wrong and why in live performances. In this case, Sia was sick, as Georgina said. So I don't think she was being rude or shady or at all. And I'm also a huge Sia fan.

It's so funny to me when supposed experts insist Sia is definitely damaging her voice and definitely has nodules/polyps when her voice has been exactly the same for twenty years and this is one of her rare bad performances and was, like you said, because of illness. Definitely seen this performance used as "evidence," of her damaging herself, which it's just not at all. I get why vocal coaches caution people not to try and sing like her, because the average singer would probably tear themselves completely apart trying, but she's clearly not hurting herself. Really wish people would stop saying that she is.

She was sick that day, she cried in backstage because of that, but a live tv show (Good Morning America) can't be canceled because the singer invited has a cold. She wouldn't have canceled anyway, she's not afraid to be imperfect, she's an adorable human. Who loves her loves her bad notes too. You go Sia! That was kind of painful to watch because your freaking brilliant and can out sing so many. But I loved some of the riffs and things she did with her voice at a lower octave. Still great. And I love your videos! I don’t think your critique was inappropriate whatsoever! Keep going HVC!

BUT I don’t think that sia has ruined her voice. She was clearly sick here because she has done many life performances that were amazing.

Sia has indie, jazzy, pop-rock roots, she performed in these generes over 15 years before bringing this style in commercial pop music and breaking all molds. Her nasal, raw, piercing, sometimes full of tension vocal delivery, her amazing vocal breaks and her passion of singing every time „like tomorrow doesn’t exists“, bleeding her soul out, will be always rejected by the conventional pop listeners who can only accept breathy, overpolished, „perfect“ techniques. Funy tho, even the most conventional pop singers try, knowingly or unknowingly, to imitate her style when they cover her songs or when they perform songs written by Sia for them. But, bad news, no one is like her and no one can top her.

I would much rather watch a performer struggle and sing live than be fake and mime any day. You could tell the audience knew something was up with her voice but they supported her and that was wonderful to see 😊

She must have been really sick. I went to see Elton John in auckland this January just gone and he managed to get through nearly 2 hours with walking pneumonia, near the end he could barely talk but still somehow managed to sing flawlessly until his voice finally completely went and he had to quit in tears.

I started teaching this year and my voice falters like this by every Friday evening. I used to sing happily on my drives but now I just sit in silence to rest my voice as much as possible over the weekend to rinse and repeat ☹
