This is a basic intro to VoIP (Voice over IP) as well as a discussion of the benefits. VoIP is the the quickly up-and-coming replacement for traditional copper (analogue) telephone service. As a business decision-maker, you need to understand what VoIP is because by 2020 it will be the standard medium for voice communication.

T1 lines are also on the way out, if not already gone. The old TDM digital system it relied on is also fading fast. BTW, one job I worked on several years ago, had an ATA, connected to the cable TV network, that could provide several phone lines in one box.

In the example where you have a Cisco VoIP adapter connected to a Nortel/Norstar phone, is it possible for the VoIP adapter to power up a phone in that manner?

Thanks for a great intro. Can you tell me if we have two people working in two offices in two different locations could the incoming call be shared between two computers/phones/mobiles and more importantly when each person makes outgoing calls would the office number be sent from both locations then?? Giving the impression of two people working side by side but infact 30km away from each other??

Can you say if it is possible to have a mixed VOIP + Traditional Telephony over a FFTC provided to traditional Household (with copper wiring in walls and many derived telephone sockets)...? Thanks,

@southernphonemanstelecom2634 4 жыл бұрын
Yes its possible, but you will have to know how to configure the connections, and that might take a telecom expert, unless you have some kmowledge.

I was wondering if you could tell me why the nortel phone is plugged into the ATA when normally the nortel phone would be hooked into a nortel KSU or PBX?

Because that is a Nortel Single Line Telephone (SLT) It is actually an Analog phone. Looks like the Nortel 9316CW.

The future is to take care of existing situations in households. It is lasting and demanding to have a telephonic fixtures and installation (I am thinking of masonry work on walls to have sockets with hiding or inconspicuous wires, etc.). Providers that offer VOIP do not consider enough that many people would procrastinate or not make decisions because of the many changes - last but not least, the purchase of new equipment - involved...

VoIP and Cellular is the future. Eventually, most traditional TDM and analog type phones will go away. And, wifi has been a wonderful help in solving problems where wiring a location was inaccessible. I suspect the rise of 5G cellular data will be a game-changer too. Thanks for your comments!

hi Tre, not sure what your comment means. If you're asserting that The Nortel Guy and the Network Advisor (kzfaq.info) are related, then yes, you're on to something. 😉

Hello, please I have a similar situation to this, I need analog to SIP converter similar to what I saw on your video i.e the black box with two cable RJ45 and RJ11, what is the name and how can I get it? It is possible to get box with 8 port of Rj11 and 2 port of Rj45? Tanks
@thenortelguy
@thenortelguy 3 жыл бұрын
Murphy, for converter box, I would look at a brand called Obihai (owned by Poly which is world renown for their quality in the VoIP equipment world). They make 1 port and 8 port boxes (called ATA or analog terminal adapters). Before you jump in and start buying things, you are going to need some technical understanding of VoIP setup. And you’ll need a VoIP service like Voip.ms or CallCentric.

@thenortelguy
@thenortelguy 5 жыл бұрын
The most important thing is you need to select a VoIP carrier (i.e 8x8, Ring Central, Fuse). Do not buy any hardware or phones until you’ve done that. Then, you will know what you need. excellent question 😄

Ya I'm only 13 and I love ip phone and I love computers to but nortel is my number one fav brand👍, so some one told me on KZfaq to go a head and download Aterisk which I did and from there I need to figure out what to do also since I'm only 13 my dad watched this vid and he will let me get some ip phones but my dad will not want to pay another bill for VOIP every month since we pay Rogers for are Internet and home phone and cell service so is there a way that I could get say some Cisco phones it out on Aterisk and make it work for free instead of paying? Also in nortel Canadian because I am?

voip uses unique ports, as opposed to the "lines" most are accustomed to. The system builds a unique "port" which is a path through the network from phone to phone.

Chris, you could setup your own VoIP server, but imo, the cloud services are so cheap that it’s not with the hassle. Take a look at CallCentric or Voipms.

That's great, but I bet they themselves will keep their copper lines as well as all secret services. But, the little people will have to switch over to "controlled" lines. Any ways thank you.

actually, these days, copper is getting less reliable than VoiP. And, ironically, I trust cellular more than I trust anything when it comes to a good connection and encryption. Thanks for the comment. :)

Hey, great video.... yes, I'm late but I am here...... I sure could use some help in the best way to move forward. I have a good gaming laptop w/ all kinds of wireless connectivity options & I'd like to get the best value for my money. Over 10 yrs ago I had a magicjack device that was pretty cool but I'm sure they offer more today? I liked your "Soft-phone" setup.... I intend to use it as a business line & with my laptop while I travel. I don't use cell phones so I need help to get decent company/apps that offer some service? Can you direct me..... The MJ voip I had worked fine & I plugged any phone into the box but now I must carry the devices w/ my laptop & I really liked the soft phone idea if you liked it..... you must... lol, hey thanks,, night , diggy

Diggy, if you’re just a one-man shop and looking for a fairly reliable VoIP service thats also pretty cost-efficient - Callcentric. Ive been using them for about 7 years or so. I am not sure if they have their own soft phone, but their is no shortage of soft phones out there. Good luck 😄
