VW is expecting the new Volkswagen ID.3 to be the new benchmark for electric family cars, just as the original Golf was when it was launched back in 1974. What I wanted to know is what's the ID.3 like to live with over a week and how far can it really go on just one charge? Find out here..

@@jay-uo2bi I have been reading many of the forums. The 2.0 (pre-release) software seems to be a big improvement but not perfect. I think most issues seem to be around the 12-volt battery drain which was sort of "worked around" in software by automatically recharging it when that happens and quite a lot of other things got better but I don't get the impression that anyone has 0 problems yet. There also seem to be hardware variants and the current update is only for 2 of the 3 variants etc etc etc. It's all just a software project that's been underestimated which I find very unsurprising as a programmer.

We all lived with nonsense range / mpg in ICE cars because refilling takes 5 mins. When getting more range takes much longer, they need to be more accurate.
@topcat4265
@topcat4265 3 жыл бұрын
I simpathise but that completely depends on your driving style, the weather, speed, the terrain & traffic. The WLTP has never been accurate. We need to be accustom to knocking 20% off what the WLTP give us.
@BlatentlyFakeName
@BlatentlyFakeName 3 жыл бұрын
Probably like MPG, they test it with no AC on, no heating, tape up panel gaps, drive like an old woman, etc. So it's not a realistic figure. In a petrol/diesel car losing 50 miles on a tank isn't a big deal, but it is on an EV. That is the difference between getting to your destination and waiting hours for a tow and recharge. Because if it goes flat, you are stuffed even if you are only a few 100 meters from a charging point. You can't just walk to a petrol station and come back with a jerry can.
@johnkeepin7527
@johnkeepin7527 3 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is the structure of the WLTP method compared with reality. It’s worth studying the graph of how it works - percentage at different speeds etc, and see if it fits with your normal journeys or not. A trip which is mostly 70 mph is often wildly out in any car - unless you benefit from a tail wind!

@captain pugwash I completely agree. I wonder if Honda are hoping that no one buys it so helping to prove that ice cars are better. Mazda are doing something similar with the MX-30 which is a really odd car now, 5 years ago perhaps but now? Not sure both those companies will survive the EV transition with attitudes like that. I get really small EVs are tough to make at a profit, given the battery size compromise. Even the ID1 will be Polo size, according to the press. I think the Zoe and the fiat 500e leave the Honda in the dust. But then I am old enough to care about practicalities over the wow factor.

'If only every thing in life was as reliable...............' Unfortunately my experience of VW is one of frequent faults and niggles. Had a Touareg that would randomly refuse to unlock on keyless, suddenly be unable to detect the key, and most worryingly, randomly go into limp mode and once did this in the middle of an overtake. It could only be resolved by pulling over, switching off, waiting 30 secs or so and turning it back on. No one could ever find an actual fault. The touchscreen randomly freezing sounds eerily familiar and so very VW.

Harry, great video thanks. 25k miles into eGolf ownership here. We treat the range given by the car as a useless guessometer, a much more useful method requires some mental maths. As the car bases all of its predictions on previous use, whereas you know how you are going to drive the car going forward. So use the 'petrol tank guage' to work out remaining kWh available... eg 1/3 tank is about 12kWh for the eGolf. Then times by a miles per kWh factor appropriate to the driving style you are going to drive (2 spirited | 3 normal | 4 eco) to give expected range. Adding all season tyres reduced range by around 5-10%, but it's a commuting weapon on them.

@@gazfish it's a combination that needs focusing on and explaining.. A very new phenomenon called "charging anxiety" will be very real to many new EV users. It's a huge new industry that currently is way behind the curve. Other major countries are miles ahead and conversely larger nations lagging. Chinese lead the market in battery dvelopment but the whole product and infrastructure needs explaining and showing to the public now. The major reason for the slow sales is the basic question..... @@nigelbullock9039 2021 is a big year for EV infrastructure for sure in terms of general public awareness. According to Zap Map, there are currently 36k connectors across the UK with 650 added in the last month alone, with a number of high profile charge hubs opening recently. Charging Anxiety is not really a thing once you own an EV as you soon work out where and how you are going to charge for your personal circumstances. its just a new thing to learn. Remember, even with years and years and years of ICE ownership, 800k ran out of fuel in 2015, so not managing your journey properly is not exactly new. However, it is correct that winter driving hammers the range, as does running on the motorway, especially compared to city / suburban driving which is very kind to all EVs. EVs have been about in increasing numbers for around 10 years, Tesla, Nissan, Renault and BMW being the most high profile along with Kia and Hyundai. Most manufactures have what are known as compliance cars so they all have experience with selling EVs. VW has been selling EVs for a number of years now with the E-Up! and the E-Golf. So, the technology is not in any way new or untested. It is just, apart from Telsa, just under the radar until the government's recent announcement. The switch to a mainly EV car fleet will be much quicker than the deadline, as with all things, once your friends have them, they will encourage you to have one too.

A great review Harry really appreciate the way you go about these in such an informative manner. I work in a Volkswagen and run a teamselling electric vehicles and have run my own for 3 years. Getting used to the whole range conundrum does take some time but temperature plays a massive part in it as far as I can see. I do believe these cars will reach these ranges in the summer and of course when you are not using all the consumable items and driving in ideal conditions. WLTP testing is a little bit like NEDC in some regards as they will present the uppermost possibilities that the vehicle will achieve. For most I suspect 150+ miles are plenty and compromises worth taking when fuel savings become evident so quickly. Getting into your warm car in freezing temperatures is such a novelty and essential part of life we'll soon expect, you will never want to be without it!

This is at the expensive end for a small-ish EV. In fact it's at the expensive end for the ID3, being the launch model; later ones are supposed to be cheaper. But yes, right now it's not a good value deal. You can get a Fiat 500e for under £20k though, or a bit over for one with reasonable range. He also had the car in his garage/port and on charge the night before so the battery was already warm. That's not worst case by a long way. He's also working out the range based on the promise of whats left which in some ev's can be quite a bit more than can actually be had - though I have no experience in the I.D.3 on that one I have experienced it in a lot of ev's. I never trust range remaining. Always go from mi/kWh used and total used vs percentage remaining and you know what you're likely to actually get.

I bet you that 260 WLTP figure is coming from a test vehicle that is doing the majority of its driving in a Stop and Go enviroment. Doing all city driving would create lots more regen braking from making more stops (thus enhancing the range ability more) versus doing his run that was majority highway driving with a lot less braking, lot less regen action going on to extend the battery range.

Great review as per usual Harry. Just a note to say that I learned recently that ID3’s in the uk market and Irish market don’t come equipped with a heat pump and in every other market it does. This has a huge impact on range. As a recent EV owner I can also attest to optimistic range figures and noticeable range decreases at motorway speeds and temperatures below 8 degrees. However, my model 3 is one of the first rhd European model 3’s which didn’t come with a heat pump for the ventilation system and on the new model 3’s it has transformed range since they started fitting them. In summer temperatures with all the a/c off the range in my car is hugely improved and I drove an e kona with a heat pump at motorway speeds and it actually improved its stated range with full regeneration on. I believe Kia e nero owners with the same drivetrain report same. The ID3 for me is a huge disappointment with it’s drum brakes and regular a/c system that’s years behind Korean cars that were originally designed for petrol and diesel configurations as well! Are VW arrogant with north Western European customers? Will they assume that we’ll just keep buying their products even though technically they’re “behind the curve”? The lack of heat pump which Nissan Leaf etc has had for years will put me off buying a škoda Enyaq for my wife if like the id3 it doesn’t come with a heat pump as the difference it makes is unbelievable. As Harry quite rightly pointed out; “we’re used to having the temperature where we like it with the seat warmers on” in modern cars and when they cost what modern ev’s cost, these modest creature comforts shouldn’t have to be given a second thought.
