I loathe touch screens in cars, they simply aren't suitable for something like a moving vehicle.

We all lived with nonsense range / mpg in ICE cars because refilling takes 5 mins. When getting more range takes much longer, they need to be more accurate.

All digital controls for new VWs is a mistake. Every review I’ve seen of the new Golf or ID.3 the thing freezes or stops working correctly!

It's a VW, it just works.... apart from when you can't do anything becasue the screen locks up.

Harry, my VW sliced my finger open too. A 2016 Golf R. The trim in front of the shifter had just begun peeling (a known issue), and as I finally came to a stop, parking at the 2019 U.S. Grand Prix, I ripped open the whole freaking length of my middle finger. So, I MacGyver’d some treatment out of hand sanitizer, paper towel, and a disposable glove, and ”cleaned” it and ”protected” it enough to be able to watch Lewis win his sixth title in person. Good stuff.

Now let’s see a review of that beautiful Silver GTI used to have a Silver Mk1 Golf 1100 L in the back in the 1980s great handling reliable car I still miss it👍

I just hope that someone driving one of these cars pressing a million buttons and not looking at the road does not crash into one of my classics - awful design for driver functionality and safety.

Harry, great video thanks. 25k miles into eGolf ownership here. We treat the range given by the car as a useless guessometer, a much more useful method requires some mental maths. As the car bases all of its predictions on previous use, whereas you know how you are going to drive the car going forward. So use the 'petrol tank guage' to work out remaining kWh available... eg 1/3 tank is about 12kWh for the eGolf. Then times by a miles per kWh factor appropriate to the driving style you are going to drive (2 spirited | 3 normal | 4 eco) to give expected range. Adding all season tyres reduced range by around 5-10%, but it's a commuting weapon on them.

Remember when VW’s slogan was, “If only everything in life was reliable as a VW”? Dieselgate, that new touchscreen and the sharp dangerous plastic would suggest not! 🤣

Try unplugging it then plugging it back in.

I wasn’t aware just how deep VW’s cost cutting had gone until I sat in the Golf 8 yesterday and watched this ID3 review. Absolutely woeful.

Love your videos they're spot on. I've just bought an ID 3. The car is fantastic but I've got software issues so it's back in the dealers on 4/1/21 for a full reprogramming. Hopefully that sorts it out!

Being new and it freezes, I'm willing to imagine it must freeze everytime when the eletronics get old. Scary

In Germany, you get a €9,480 environmental bonus - €3,000 + 16% VAT from VW and €6,000 from the government - when buying an ID.3. The government bonus applies to any electric car with a net MSRP of less than €40,000. That's a massive incentive but also shows how desperate the government is to get as many e-cars on the road as possible.

A great review Harry really appreciate the way you go about these in such an informative manner. I work in a Volkswagen and run a teamselling electric vehicles and have run my own for 3 years. Getting used to the whole range conundrum does take some time but temperature plays a massive part in it as far as I can see. I do believe these cars will reach these ranges in the summer and of course when you are not using all the consumable items and driving in ideal conditions. WLTP testing is a little bit like NEDC in some regards as they will present the uppermost possibilities that the vehicle will achieve. For most I suspect 150+ miles are plenty and compromises worth taking when fuel savings become evident so quickly. Getting into your warm car in freezing temperatures is such a novelty and essential part of life we'll soon expect, you will never want to be without it!

As well as quoted range, the elephant in the room is still price. Electric cars are still not mass market, technology still has some way to go to mature. Good video as always.

Fiddling with that touch screen while driving is just as bad as texting on your phone. 6 points please

Another great, honest review. The good thing about knobs and dials is, with a bit of fumbling, you can navigate your way around all the controls without your eyes leaving the road. I don't like the touch-screen stuff at all, especially if it becomes frustrating to use. Surely less use of novelty strip lighting in the cabin could be put to better battery range instead too?

I’ll admit I love the white steering wheel with the minimalist VW logo. It reminds me of the original VW Bus yet looks very contemporary considering white steering wheels are unheard of today.

Out on the heated seats, radio on, wipers on non stop as it was a wet day, this car would have needed a charge to get home.

They need to turn the touch screen upside down so you have a little palm rest along the bottom and buttons on top. Love that you had that Silver GTI next to it! 🏁

Great review as per usual Harry. Just a note to say that I learned recently that ID3’s in the uk market and Irish market don’t come equipped with a heat pump and in every other market it does. This has a huge impact on range. As a recent EV owner I can also attest to optimistic range figures and noticeable range decreases at motorway speeds and temperatures below 8 degrees. However, my model 3 is one of the first rhd European model 3’s which didn’t come with a heat pump for the ventilation system and on the new model 3’s it has transformed range since they started fitting them. In summer temperatures with all the a/c off the range in my car is hugely improved and I drove an e kona with a heat pump at motorway speeds and it actually improved its stated range with full regeneration on. I believe Kia e nero owners with the same drivetrain report same. The ID3 for me is a huge disappointment with it’s drum brakes and regular a/c system that’s years behind Korean cars that were originally designed for petrol and diesel configurations as well! Are VW arrogant with north Western European customers? Will they assume that we’ll just keep buying their products even though technically they’re “behind the curve”? The lack of heat pump which Nissan Leaf etc has had for years will put me off buying a škoda Enyaq for my wife if like the id3 it doesn’t come with a heat pump as the difference it makes is unbelievable. As Harry quite rightly pointed out; “we’re used to having the temperature where we like it with the seat warmers on” in modern cars and when they cost what modern ev’s cost, these modest creature comforts shouldn’t have to be given a second thought.
