Akaashi's really one of the more underrated characters of the show, to be honest. He generally keeps a level head regardless of the situation and he has incredible awareness while out on the court, even though he thinks he's always overthinking things. He's a perfect crutch for a player like Bokuto, in my opinion.

as a girl, i dont really mind the humor around their crush on kiyoko. its not the best humor out there but theyre highschoolers and crushes are stupid at that age 😂 id be a bit unhappier if everyone thought it was okay but everyone thinks its extraordinarily weird and kiyoko can and does tell them when she doesnt like things and dishes out her own savage lines to make fun of the members 😂

I agree. these sorts of jokes only land well because the other characters see their behavior as strange. we know that those 3 aren't the type to go too far with it, either. it only bothered me /slightly/ during s1 because Kiyoko didn't have much personality outside of being the "unattainable pretty girl" trope at first but Furudate gave her enough attention to really round out her character. it was like how it'd prob actually be to get to know Kiyoko if you knew her irl - almost cold/distant at first, and then warms up over time. also... compared to how some other managers are treated in sports anime (cough Momoi from KNB cough), Furudate's jokes surrounding Kiyoko are so refreshing.

I agree, like, those three are way extra on the regular. But, it could be WAAAAAAAY worse, especially for an anime. Here it is so so tame that I think it’s ok to find it funny. If they took it a level or two further and talked about inappropriate things in regards to her, then it would not be funny or ok. This is actually one of the things I appreciate about Haikyuu. I can count on one hand the number of inappropriate/questionable humor/scenes out of four whole seasons so far, and there’s only like two or three that really make me roll my eyes. But I digress. This scene was funny, and the whole “apparently he is the only one who has been slapped by kiyoko” line gets me every time😂

To clear up some confusion, Oikawa is not part of the top 5 aces. It was just Hinata saying that he gets excited playing super strong opponents which included Ushiwaka, Bokuto, and Oikawa. And another detail is that they said the Top Aces, not top overall player. But obviously the top aces must also be good at the basics.

As a girl, I don't really mind the humor with Nishinoya and Tanaka being over the top with Kiyoko due to their crushes on her. Young guys in high school are learning how to even speak to girls, she handles herself well with them, and they never take it too far. Also the show doesn't make her value of just being the 'beautiful' manager, she gets her moments, and I never see any of the female managers be put in any light that they are just there to meet guys.

@@MsColorada The martial arts superstition for belt colorings (at least with the people I've had the opportunity of training with) is that everyone starts off with a fresh new white belt, and that as you train for years and years, the belt becomes worn, darkens, and eventually becomes a black belt. So that theory could definitely well be.

Praise this anime. The BBQ scene could be seen as slow filler that doesn't add to anything. But it has perfect cuts and tempo it moves from one conversation to another that is happening close by. It really feels like they are live people having real time conversations in a bbq the way it is shot and edited. And of course adds SO MUCH to everyone's relationship, conversations and personalities. They do not just "hang with their teammates", they mix, they talk to who we can assume they have made relationships with. Even in the last scene you can FEEL the friendships that have been made. Eveything about the sceen makes it feel very wel put together and doesn't feel like extra at all. It is the perfect break between the training arc and the now upcoming hype tournament.

It's a different field of sports but if you're in for more realistic depiction, try Baseball manga/anime; and i'm recommending Last Inning. They got toxic environment-or rather extra intense internal competitions, obsession toward winning as the be-all-and-end-all and false ideologies surrounding the most popular sport for Japanese demographics (second to Sumo) right into your face. Maybe Haikyuu were written this way because, like SLAMDUNK (during 90's and early 2000), the author wants the sport to get more exposure to the public.

coach just to clarify abt the convo tsukki had w his brother, tsukki understands why his brother had to lie. the root of his confusion and his hesitation towards volleyball was bcuz he saw his brother's dedication and hardwork result to nothing, that passion could just make one miserable. that's why this talk is important to tsukki bcuz it kind of free him and solidies the idea or the answer bokuto gave him from the camp.

And even when that scene have some comedic elements, example the way Hinata react, if the show wasn't Haikyuu, literally touching and acosing the female cast will be the focus of the joke. Sadly I have seen that in a lot of shounen, I don't want to say names 👀 (I'm focusing in the comedic aspects, in reference at the scene coach point out btw) but yeah ;)

I find in comparison to other anime the fanservice and sexism in Haikyuu is relatively low (the girls actually have conversations and isn't just "the girlfriend" or "the award the main character gets at the end"). I feel the anime added a lot of fanservice shots tbh. The girly who ate all the riceballs (one of fukurodani's managers) is a competitive eater and she's stuffing her face in every frame haha. I'm not sure if you remember but Kiyoko slapped Nishinoya the first episode we met him. Another fun detail is that Kuroo confiscated Kenma's video game when he was forcing him and Tsuki to eat more food. So many fun details this episode it's just so delightful.

Shirofuku Yukie's eating is actually one reason I love Haikyuu! Most anime would rather have a girl shy away from food or someone make a fatphobic comment, but Yukie bravely and boldly eats the entire plate of onigiri and is shown to enjoy it. It's such a positive moment to see a girl positively enjoying food rather than rejecting it or denying it to themselves.

The way Tsukki's brother feels about volleyball is how I felt when I started in rugby. I was only 5,10 and 120 lbs. in grade 9, but I always wanted to play rugby after watching my cousin play in a match once when I was in middle school. He was one of the top 3 players in the province and was what would be considered an "ace player". People always asked me why I wanted to play such a physical sport when I was so small and physically weak. I just told them that I saw this as another challenge to complete and something I wanted to work hard at and be proud of by the time I finished high school despite the fact that the odds were against me. By the end of high school, I was 5,11 and had bulked up to 170 lbs. found myself really happy with what I had accomplished. I did what I set out to do, do something I could be satisfied with.

To elaborate on your question, Coach: "Ushiwaka" is Ushijima Wakatoshi, Shiratorizawa's ace. They shorten it by removing the 2nd and 4th characters of his full name and mashing together the 1st & 3rd because it's easier to say. Most people do this when referring to him casually. Related fun fact: They do this same thing with Oikawa's school, Aoba Josei, by calling it Seijoh. The first character for Ao is more commonly, alternatively pronounce Sei.

31:20 the moment tsukki's brother is talking about is actually when he was the ace of his middle school team. basically, he already had that moment that hooked him on volleyball back in middle school, when he was a celebrated player and able to enjoy the games he played in, so even though his time at karasuno was deeply frustrating and humiliating, he didn't give up. he already knew how fun volleyball could be. 23:41 tsukki doesn't want to be called that because it's actually a nickname (that everyone picked up because it's what yamaguchi calls him). his surname is actually tsukishima, and in japan, it's polite and expected to refer to someone by their surname unless they've said it's okay for you to call them something else. bokuto is basically jumping the gun here and talking to tsukki like they're good friends, and tsukki, being tsukki, is disgruntled over it. 19:47 "why is tanaka in there" it's because tanaka, noya, and tora (as dutiful worshippers of kiyoko) are trying to run interference and keep all the guys away from her, haha. girl managers get hit on a lot in haikyuu, but because kiyoko is beautiful, she gets extra attention, and the three gargoyles don't like that at all, haha. 36:44 oikawa isn't one of the top five aces of the country, because he's a setter, not a power hitter; although he is considered one of the all-around best players, and won an award for being the best setter in the prefecture when he was in middle school. he's shown in the group of players who are "a lot better" because he's just a monster player and terrifyingly good, not an ace. ;) also, this is just an observation, but one of my favorite little details of haikyuu are the similarities between tsukki and his older brother. when his brother was lying to tsukki about being the ace at karasuno, he had a wide, giant smile on his face -- a fake smile. and similarly, when tsukki is obviously lying and trolling people or being sarcastic and getting under their skin, he tends to use a similar giant, fake smile. but in this private moment, their real smiles are small and understated -- and it is just a really subtle way of showing how similar they are, and also how special this moment is. 🥺🥺🥺

The "Top Player" list they were talking about is the top 3/5 Aces in Japan. Ushiwaka is in the top 3 and Bokuto is in the top 5. Oikawa isn't in this list since he isn't an ace, but he is one of the best players in Japan, he just hasn't been given an exact ranking that we've been made aware of. Nishinoya, Tanaka, and Yamamoto were grouping together to defend Kiyoko/Shimizu from any guys that would have tried to us the BBQ to try to flirt with her. Another fantastic reaction, Coach.
