The way the two parts separate is you push DOWNward on the top half with the key compared with the bottom half. Rock it back and forth a bit and it will release.

Actually, the correct way is; you separate the two parts. With the battery side facing up, you slide the part with the key down. So do not force by pulling forward from the T9 as there are two clips latched on either side of the T9 hole. Look closely and you will see what am talking about.
