I love the sound of a good 5 Cylinder engine, and I've had the pleasure of reviewing a couple cars with the aforementioned engine. And here we go again!

The same (similar) volvo 5 cylinders are in so many other volvos, which are more common than this s60r-m, so you can get this amazing sound out of the base models such as 850/S70/V70/C70/C30/S40/V50.. list goes on. Volvo gets award for best sound-for-money.

Yeah problem is they get horrendous fuel economy for poor performance. IMO you can get a good sound out of say a Type R Honda or I6 from BMW with better performance and efficiency. The only Volvo I’d buy is an R like this, not a standard one. For instance: Volvo S40 2.4i - 125kW/11.5L/100km BMW 325i E90 - 160kW/10.8L/100km Accord Euro CU2 - 148kW/9.9L/100km Volvo makes nice cars but they don’t offer anything above any other brand which is why I’ve never considered buying one. They do sound unique though!

The Top Gear review in 2004 made me want one. If I remember correctly, the Advanced button does some sort of dynamic vector control for the drive so power is actively split between all 4 wheels when cornering.

Good review. These S60 high pressure turbocharged engines in the T5 and R and wonderful. The growl is intoxicating. The seats feel like your sitting in a Bentley.

For the kiwis wanting to get one. NZ models only had Automatics. For any modern Volvo. All manuals are either transmission swapped or imported.

Is this only on the S60R? A few years ago (pre Covid if I recall) I remember looking at an NZ new V70R wagon that was manual and passing on it at the time as was just about to buy a house (regret it now as the prices on even import automatic ones have gone crazy). I bought my dad a low pressure turbo V70 wagon (with the 5 cylinder engine) as a retirement gift as he had to turn his company car back in, and it has been brilliant. Sounds fantastic for what it is. I had a 940 wagon when I was younger too and that was great. Now I'm off to Trademe to find another Volvo.

This one is definitely factory manual and nz new so I think there must be an error in your calculation. I’m told there’s 16 manuals in nz

Lies, they imported a few of them registered as auto’s. However they are factory m66! Don’t believe me, check the VIN!

I've got this same model but Non-R, it has the 2.0T 5 cylinder petrol engine, auto gearbox, makes a lovely noise, doesn't like to rev at all though, midrange is where it feels happy, my one only has 180bhp, weighing in at 1500kg, I love it

i love my 07 S60R, its such an amazing vehicle. mine is black sapphire over nordkapp (the blue shown in the video) and I would buy another one if I could.

Have seen this one up on the volvo buy sell group, ended up buying my megane rs trophy but this was the one I couldn't quite afford, yes I bought a renault but this also delves into my track day addiction a bit more than the volvo could and I wouldn't have had the money to buy that Volvo atm. Maybe 10 years down the road when I'm not 17 (they'll probably be worth 6 figures by then though)!

Oh tbh I don't really see these becoming valuable cars, they're cool and rare but it'll never be on the level of an E46 M3 or B7 RS4

@KiwiCarLife Yeah won't get that high, but they're definitely climbing, basically any old hot volvo is climbing now, especially the t5 wagons. Dream car garage is the btcc Era t5 wagon 850.

4:27 thats called rev-hang. And its a eco/gas-milage thing. My Civic does it as well... But it cannot be tuned out, because it bricks the cruise control otherwise. Actually makes it very difficult even with putting around to match the engine to the gears. I had smoother shifts with my lighter flywheel K24...

@@KiwiCarLife Actually, they made manuals so unappealing these days with stuff like this, to the point where you're just opting for the automatic instead. I'm actually second-guessing my decision to go for the manual instead of the CVT. May aswell get one NPC mobile for reliability, and have a second car for fun. To have both, in a modern car, is too expensive for us mere morrtals. And by modern I mean 2018/2019+.

Fark! These are early fly by wire throttle cars and all of the Volvos of this era were a little laggy in throttle response. Now you’ve hit a sweet spot for me. Love Volvos, I’m alive because even a ‘79 264 had side intrusion bars that stopped a falcon that hit my door at 60km/h. We even repaired it and put it back the road.

I wonder what you're reaction would be if you took my manual 850 t5 for a spin. Mildly tuned, id say 280ish hp. But probably half a tonne lighter than the s60r. Mad torque!

Did you experiment with the active chassis settings while driving? There are Comfort, Sport, and Advanced modes. There is a dramatic difference in suspension feel and throttle response when in Advanced mode versus Comfort or even Sport modes. The suspension is bone-jarring when in Advanced mode, unfortunately.
