I used to live in Sunbury, Georgia, approximately 25 miles South of Savannah, and there was an older Black Lady that lived way back in the swamp that was reputed to be a “Root Worker”, which is how the locals referred to her, but supposedly she was really good at Casting Spells, removing bad luck, etc.. The House I was renting at the time had a HUGE pecan tree in the yard, and one day a fellow of about 15, maybe 17 years old showed up at the house and asked us if he could harvest the pecans from our tree, because his Grandma (The Root Worker Lady) also baked homemade Pecan pies and sold them all over Liberty County. Needless to say, we told him he was welcome to as many pecans as he was able to harvest, and he actually got to be a fairly frequent visitor to our house; he used to like to catch Catfish in the pond/Small Lake we had on the property. Anyway, after he had harvested two very large trash bags full of Pecans, he thanked us and left. About 2 weeks later, Miss Root Worker herself pulled up into our driveway with Darrel (Her Grandson) and she got out and gave us three DELICIOUS homemade Pecan Pies, she thanked us for being decent neighbors and she offered to Bless our Home and the Property, which of course we were Happy to allow her to do.. There are some FASCINATING people in Coastal Georgia, and I really loved living there for two years, I’d love to go back down there for a visit, it’s been more than 20 years since I left there for the last time…

Mike , thats an awesome story. Speaking of Sunbury we did an episode about Sunbury that you might like. And we loved Sunbury so much we almost bought a house there. Here's the link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdWff7mo29islXk.html

@@KeepingHistoryontwowheels Thank you, I will check it out! I LOVED living in Sunbury/Midway, but then again, after growing up in Baltimore City, I’m pretty impressed with ANYPLACE that doesn’t have shootouts in the street on a daily basis, which is exactly what Baltimore City is like, at least for the last 25, 30 years or so..

MZneesh, absolutely love hearing from you. I really hope you liked the story. I actually tried to keep her from getting unknowns visiting her grave site because I can see from the older stories that they don't like that. I hope I did her justice with my story. I would love to ask you about what part of Colleton County she was born at. One of my great grandfathers kicked a woman (who was related to us and mixed/probably former slave decent) off of his land. Cut to the 70's and my father took part of her old torn up house to build our home. The sides of her home were weathered and perfect for the subfloor. He had no idea of the history. We were tormented as kids by spirits who hated us. My father fought them the rest of his life. Thank God we are pentecostal and know that hoodoo can be used against the Lord. We respect and I really revere the gullah and hoodoo culture, but being tortured by the same manifested spirits my older sisters were 10 years before (we could both describe them to a T) made me terrified of anything like that for a long time . I don't know if there is good too. I understand gullah speak and went to church and school in Walterboro as the minority lol. I get and got picked on for being a "white" girl who talks geechee. I don't mean no disrespect, I was just born and raised there and I moved up north where white people don't talk like me. I am gonna paint my porch ceiling haint blue once we finally have our own home. Anyway the area I grew up in and now own part of that land is called "horse pen" near Walterboro. I grew up with my Momma asking if the boo hag was riddin' me all night when I didn't want to get up to go to school. BTW, my older sisters would find small animals bound in scraps of fabric, and buried near what was left of the stone walkway up to her home

One reason they painted the ceiling sky blue was so dirt Dobbers a type of wasp that makes dirt nest, when they fly in the porch they see the blue and they think it’s sky so they go on to the next porch. That is mainly the reason they painted them sky blue.

I’ve resided in the Coastal region and I’m familiar with the stories of Minerva. For the most part whenever we did see her, she didn’t like speaking with anyone or making eye contact. Some of the local shop owners were familiar with her. There really hasn’t been extensive information or stories shared about Minerva or her practices. She had a feature in the film. The way it was presented made people curious because it ties into the mystic, supernatural culture of Savannah. That wanted to hear something scary/ spooky. Unfortunately, due to her family not knowing how to maximize the opportunities that came from her feature in the film, they probably are still angry about it. All in all, you did a great piece and I enjoyed watching it.

@@trueblue5028 Hi true blue, Minerva wasn't entreated the way that she should have been after the production. It wasn't fair to Minerva or her family. Minerva's family should have been granted life time royalties for her being used in the film. She didn't. However, Paula Deen made sandwiches out of a station wagon for production that led to a multimillionaire. I don't see how in the world you see the comment as a slight. The true Dr. Buzzard from years ago, around the same time as my Aunt who was a practitioner. He maximized who he was and made the practices accessible to all. That's what I'm talking about. You're talk about harming someone Bec they're disappointed with how she was treated!?!?!!?

@@trueblue5028 Ms. Minerva wasn't the only practitioner or the last one. People violated Ms. Minerva's family's privacy by constantly showing up unannounced. Furthermore, practitioners maintain and conceal their identities for a reason. Prime example was Dr. Buzzard. The name remained well after the original Dr. Buzzard was deceased. However, they extended the lifeline of his work with various booklets, pamphlets, numbers and so forth that were distributed statewide for a price. No, I don't like that similar opportunities were not presented to Ms. Minerva. Paula Deen got rich off of the same film and didn't provide nearly what Mrs.Minerva did for that film! We do not do ANY ill dealings as practitioners NONE. Nor do we threaten people with our heritage, legacy, and knowledge. Signed, 4th Generation and the Legacy
