Keeping History on two wheels

In 1981 Danny Hansford's life was ended in the Mercer House in Savannah Georgia by antique dealer Jim Williams. William was the only person in the state to ever be tried 4 times for the same crime. Eventually acquitted, Williams passed away 6 months later. The book "Midnight in the garden of good and evil " was Author John Berendt's account of the trial and the many colorful real life Savannah Characters surrounding the trial and life in Savannah.

Lady Chablis played herself in the movie. She was Excellent in the movie! She REALLY brought some festivity as herself to the movie 🥰 She passed away a few years ago at age 59. Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil is one of my favorite top 3 films! ❤️

I remember Jimmy Williams. We had a brief, unremarkable 2-3 month 'affair' in mid-1960's, and Kevin Spacey 'nailed' Jimmy with the exception of Jimmy's unique hand gesture when dismissing an individual or an idea posed by another.

True. I have lived in Savannah all my life and know a lot of the characters from the book but I was offended by the movie portrayal of some people. Luther Driggers was portrayed as crazy and with flies circling him and that is so silly. That was not like him - not even a little bit. The gentleman who walked the invisible dog did walk a dead dog but he never used that joke of a leash. I guess the moviemakers thought we were too stupid to understand what he was doing without that.

Yoi are correct, the visuals in the movie are outstanding. Are uou talking about the cemetery where she did the midnight speaking with her dead husband? That was very Edgar Allen Poe. However the actual cemetery as it turns out was not so much Poe-ish. Once I found the actual grave of her husband its no where near as spooky. I will link the video where I went looking for their graves for you.

The book was great but "Hollywood" didn't, and probably couldn't, do it justice. After watching the movie I suspected that the script writer was given a copy of the book but said that he didn't need the book because he would makeup his own story. It seemed like an attempt to make Clint Eastwood's daughter famous rather than make a movie.

My husband and I spent an evening with Nancy Hillis (Mandy in the book) listening to her stories My husband didn't want to go with me but eventually did. At the end of the evening he said that she was the most fascinating person he had ever met in his life! She said that almost all of the stories in the book were told to John Berendt ( the author ) by Joe Odum According to her everybody liked Joe and he was able to introduce Berendt to people in Savannah and get him into places he otherwise wouldn't be welcomed.

I saw Lady Chablis on her last show at Club One in 2016. I always saw her around town when i live there but a moved away for a few years and when she came out on stage , i knew she must have been sick. Her character in the movie was real and not made up, others where embellish . A good book to read is by Nancy Hillis "the Vamp of Savannah", i got to know her a little through Facebook. I believe Jeffery Hall still lives in Savannah and was best friend with Nancy.

Jack Thompson, the actor who played Sonny in the movie, is Australian and has a deep Australian accent in his normal speaking voice. Watch him in Breaker Morant. Great actor, and a great job handling the accent of a deep South lawyer. He turns 80 in a couple of weeks. I once helped The Lady Chablis with a problem with her website before she passed. You should all buy her autobiography, "Hiding My Candy: The Autobiography of the Grand Empress of Savannah." There should be a movie about her! And what a grand, fine lady she was.

Oh I totally agree about there should be a movie about her. I personally dont agree about what she did but that's not for me to judge. She took criticism on the chin and felt with it. And led the pack for others. That's called being strong.

@@KeepingHistoryontwowheels no we visited historical Savannah. I did hear they have a tour just about the murder. Next time we visit, I will definitely take that tour. The Mercer House tour was about the art Jim Williams collected. The only time the murder was mentioned was when we were in the room that Danny was murdered in. Unfortunately they didn’t allow pictures! I was at a park speaking to someone about the tour. As my husband and I were leaving, Jerry Spence said he overheard me speaking about the movie. He introduced himself as the only survivor of the story. He said he was in the movie as the hairdresser during the scene with Allison Eastwood. I recognized him immediately. Of course it’s been over 20 years but his voice hasn’t changed and I recognized the eyes. When we returned to our room I googled him. I found out he is homeless now.

@PungiFungi
@PungiFungi 2 жыл бұрын
It is said Serena was based on Helen Drexel, who passed away in the 1970s so Berendt was manipulating the chronology. Which also meant he never met her and whatever written about her came from people who knew her. This would mean Drexel would’ve been on those cigarette ads that Dawes posed for. I wonder if any still exists to verify this.

Sonny Seiler passed recently in Savannah. He was in his 90's.... Jim died before his mother. She inherited the mansion but left it to her daughter, Dorothy, when she passed.
