In part 1, the Krenim Captain had an aggressive tone while talking to Janeway. When Janeway mentions that she was under the belief that they were in Zahl Space, He got offended and threatened Voyager if they do not turn back. As she doesn't like it when people threaten her and her ship, Janeway ignores him and continues on triggering the events of the Year of Hell. The reset at the end of Part 2 which goes back to before the Astrometrics Lab was opened and before they entered or even know about the Krenim/Zahl Sector. Voyager encounters the Same Krenim Captain again far earlier in time than in Part 1. He actually speaks to them in a calm and professional tone informing them that the area is in dispute and asks them to avoid their space. Janeway thanks him for the warning and acknowledges the request. Avoiding a Year of Hell. Lesson: Always Ask nicely and you may get what you want. 😁

This is a terrific episode and a glimpse at what Voyager might have been. A ship lost at the far side of the galaxy without supplies, space-dock and with two clashing crews. It could have been SO good but the big red reset button always put things back the way they were by the start of the next episode. Year of Hell, briefly shows what the show might have been like without that magic button.
@NimhLabs
@NimhLabs 4 жыл бұрын
@@doctordave3586 yeah, but at the time, it would not have worked. So much discussion of Voyager takes place thinking of how shows work on Netflix and with DVD Seasons released. And yes... people mention Babylon-5... but considering that the majority of people first learned of Babylon-5 from a running gag Ryan Style's character in the Drew Carry show made for a single episode--a character whose main feature is being the resident CuckooCloudLander... it kind of shows that Babylon-5 was a bit ahead of its time, hence why it didn't really work.

I watched most of TNG, DS9, voyager, Enterprise AND Babylon 5 when it first aired on TV, and I can totally attest to the fact that ongoing stories are a pain in the ass in that environment. I never truly made sense of the ongoing continuity of Star Trek (and yes, there IS some even in the fully episodic series) until I got pretty much all of it on DVD something like 15 years later. On TV you have the factor of it being a week between episodes, sometimes the TV station skip episodes or show things out of order, or you wouldn't be able to watch/record one (by the time voyager was on TV it was often on at anything from 11pm to 1 AM, where TNG had been on at 8:30pm - a big deal if you're still in school, or have a job.) Oh, but video rental stores were a thing, and sure enough, I rented Star Trek a LOT from such places over the years. But guess what? Most such places had a haphazard collection of VHS tapes, often totalling about 10 tapes for any given series (tapes held roughly 2 episodes each). And these weren't even consecutive, they were a haphazard collection. I was truly over the moon when I finally lived near a Video Rental store in the late 90's that had ALL of TNG and DS9... That sure took up a lot of shelf space by the way. Each season is roughly 13 tapes (not all seasons are 26 episodes), so that's close to 90 tapes per series. Contrast this to the DVD collection I had (which I have since lost while moving house but I re-bought some of it, taking the opportunity to get the TNG blurays instead) Each season box set coming in a package that is roughly equivalent in size to a VHS tape, all 21 seasons of TNG, DS9 and Voyager combined is only 21 such boxes, which means on VHS a single series takes up more than 4 times as much room as all 3 series from that era combined... And Babylon 5? Oh, that was fascinating when I caught a glimpse of it, but making sense of the ongoing narrative from TV broadcasts was basically impossible. So... Episodic TV existed for a reason, and it was only widespread availability of DVD's that made an ongoing story workable in practice. (Technically video rental stores could allow for it, but as noted few of them bothered to collect 'complete' series; and given the bulk of VHS tapes, you can hardly blame them, so while possible in theory it was a moot point in practice) DVD's and streaming services have changed things, but ongoing stories really were NOT fun to try and follow on TV... A two part story is different, because it's short enough that finding both halves isn't too hard. Another solution that has worked since the early days of TV is the 'Soap Opera' model, but that relies on the fact that missing individual episodes rarely matters that much. You can miss a week's worth of episodes (about 5 of them) in most Soaps and still easily follow what the story is doing, because of how agonisingly slow it is... Ongoing narratives are great NOW, but they weren't anywhere near as much fun when you couldn't count on not missing large chunks of the story, and had to wait a long time to learn what happened next. (weekly broadcasts.) I mean that whole 'last time on Star Trek' thing existed because it could be hard to remember after a week what had happened in the last episode otherwise, but now it's just a redundant nuisance... Things are products of their times. And it's easy to forget what that really means...

I agree with you, I think this is what Voyager should have been. They are a stranded crew very far from home in hostile space, things should have been hard. Most of the series was luxury yacht voyager.
@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know what an intrepid class ship is designed for, but a Galaxy class is designed (assuming it has recently fully resupplied) for 7 years of independent operation. Expecting voyager to be failing THAT badly seems a little off to me as well. We need a bit of a happy medium given what Starfleet ships are actually designed to deal with. (again. Galaxy class is designed for 7 years of independent operation) Now, I WOULD assume that this 'independent operation' stuff is related to routine operations, so it doesn't include battle damage, accidents and so on, and there may still be a variety of issues that can't be repaired without a spacedock. But that would mean that while stuff does fail on voyager, it would take a while, not be failing at the rate the year of hell was implying, nor leaving the ship quite THAT badly off. I'd guess sooner or later you get damage you can't fix without supplies and outside assistance...

I think they made a mistake with the collection of item from destroyed civilisations etc. I think they should have linked it to using the item to restore the society and completely reset everything that way over the destruction of the ship and that's how they resolve it all. Then the crenium help to restore voyager, but parts of the ship are badly damaged, and the ship spends "time" in a bubble generated by them, and then suddenly we have version two of the ship, a stronger version, upgrades, including the aero shuttle, and making the ship more capable of surving, almost akin to something between warship voyager and the ablitive armour. And wolla, new season, new ship, more merc, and that season is spent not going home but reuniting the crew. We find many have died, but also many new species are met and join the crew, building a mini federation in the quadrant and the crenum destroy their time ship and form a union. Builds the opportunity for many new species on ship, many new stories and true star trek style exploration akin to TNG, even for a season. With everyone found either reunited, dead or choosing to stay they make the choice to head home again.

There were 2 reasons Janeway didn’t go around Krenim space. The first is that apparently the first indication she got that she’d entered it was when Voyager was attacked. It wasn’t until almost a week in that one ship even bothered to communicate (and that was only to threaten Janeway). The second was that in that timeline, Krenim space was too large to go around. When time reset itself at the end of the second episode, the Krenim Imperium was much smaller (as their rivals hadn’t been erased) and thus it was practical to go around their territory.

Well, my guess on this is simple: In the alternate timeline before and after the 1st temporal incursion in the episode part 1, Kes never had a time shift to the Year of hell. Like Annorax said, if you remove even one asteroid, you alter the fates of billions. When Annorax removed the civilization, he affected the fabric of reality and Kes might have never underwent that procedure in that timeline at all or shifted to another point in history. However, at the end of Part 2, we are back in the "Prime" timeline and Janeway does remember the warnings from Kes about the Year of Hell. She accepts that a longer journey was needed rather than fight a losing battle against Krenim. The end of Part 2 in essence is the "Real" reality, it is also why Time Agents of 29th Century Temporal Integrity Commission and 31st Century Federation Temporal Defense Agency would not intervene. (Based on the logic I am rationalizing from DTI novels, they won't mess with events native to their historical timeline aka this version of Voyager and Krenim encounter).

The show has a lot of problems, but for the entire show, the ship was basically falling apart, and was constantly getting its ass kicked by pretty much every other ship they came across. Enterprise (in the timelined fork where Archer has those things in his head and T'pol is the captain) with 1 warp nacelle was limited to a very slow warp speed. So in theory, you can go to warp with only one nacelle, at a much reduced speed. So voyager may be able to do something like... warp 2 or something with only one.

The Year of Hell episode did not state explicitly that whenever the time ship altered the timeline that the region controlled by their forces also changed, therefore, Voyager was going to be in conflict with the time ship eventually because the whole region of space in that sector isn't stable and the mapping or intelligence gathering of Voyager in regards to who controls space from one area to the next would not be accurate enough to help.

This popped up in my recommendations, probably because of my comments on Guardian of Forever stuff (KZfaq has interesting algorithm) With Star Trek Picard season 2 featuring time as the main plot device and "Q" returning to help likely guide events, I think we may see the Krenim again. Annorax is an amazing character, he's like the Captain of the Flying Dutchman, doomed to sail the seas for all eternity to atone for his sins. @Lore, I am big fan of Wagner classic operas and thematically, I think Annorax is a tragic villain. Also, for more contemporary comparisons, Annorax maybe the Star Trek equivalent of Thanos from Infinity War, he will give up anything and everything to achieve an unachievable goal. If the Krenim become a recurring race, I hope they are treated like the Cardassians and we learn more about them as a species. They have unique view on history, individuality, and destiny that is refreshing in science fiction. In a way, I find them very Operatic as not beyond redemption, but always choosing the course that will improve their fate rather than seeking to improve the universe with their capabilities.

After so many people had died and they were dealing with what is basically time travel I knew something was going to happen. However the fact that no one remembers the year of hell annoys me because it was a foreshadowed plot point when Kes was going backwards through time. It's just such a shame that this wasn't a season like originally planned and had to end with the crew hitting the reset button. It also boggles my mind when you tell the boss how much time you need and they give you half. If only B'elanna said what she said in season one, I don't remember the exact quote but it was something along the lines of "It'll take six hours" "You have four" "No. I don't exaggerate. If I say it'll take six hours it'll take about six hours, possibly more." I do like the villain in this story though. One of my rules for good story telling is "No one thinks of themselves as the villain" a quote I stole from Quark. Him and his crew started with the best intentions but as time went on they started to question what they were doing. Like you said I think the captain has regret but is convinced they have to keep going because the next one will fix it. At the end I don't think there was any doubt that they were trying to fix a mistake and had to keep going to fix it. Just one more time and everything will be fixed, just one more spin and I'm sure I'll hit the jackpot, just one more...

Janeway's decision to avoid krenim space or not was not so much based on whether or not they could do damage to Voyager, but rather the krenim captain's handling of the situation. The first time around the krenim just opened fire with no warning or provocation (aside from the mere presence of voyager at or near the border of the disputed territory). Conversely, the second time around, the krenim captain was more polite and business-like. If you're going to criticize Janeway (and by extension the entire crew because none of them really objected- not even Tuvok), criticize her (them) for basing the decision on pride. It was basically "oh you think you're tough in your little ship taking potshots at us? Bitch, please, we fought the BORG and species 8472 and SURVIVED!" Whereas the second time was like "oh you're giving us a polite warning and treating us with respect, ok, we will comply"

People talk about how Voyager should have been like this... kind of miss how television shows that were like this all the time didn't work in the 90s, as there was no easy way to binge watch episodes you missed. The lack of DVD compilations and Tivo (let alone Netflix) meant that Status Quo was needed... otherwise people would stop watching if they missed a couple of episodes. Yeah... we did have "Last time on" start to show up on television shows in the 90s... but it was still a rather new concept to include. Just for refrance SatAM X-Men had to fight to have it not just be a ridiculous Status Quo show. Imagine if X-Men was pretty much just Superfriends but with more analogies to be big gay than Superfriends. That being said... it would be possible to do a "reboot/reimagining" of Voyager--as after Janeway returns there are three main time lines (One in the Delta Quadrant, One with Voyager Decommissioned as Pegasus Station w/ the Borg defeated, and the third with Voyager still flying about and the Borg still active)... it wouldn't be two far fetched to have too main timelines that lead to those three timelines. With each of those two timelines not being linear as Janeway breaks the Prime Temporal directive five times an episode (though sometimes not until several seasons later).

My issue with the episode is that in season 3, Kes warned them to stay clear of the Krenim! She provided Tuvok with a detailed report of what she saw when she time traveled. See Season 3, episode 21 (before and after). Regardless of Voyager running into the Zahl first, the second Janeway heard the name "Krenim," they should have tucked tail and ran!
@NimhLabs
@NimhLabs 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the common answer is the timeline had already been altered at the start of The Year of Hell, so that Kes did not give that detailed report. It is also not the timeline Kes experienced as the Krenim are in a completely different location from where Kes knew them to be.

When I watched Voyager we were still watching it on a weekly time schedule there was no sky 1 block of four episodes a day reruns or Netflix to binge on. So in hindsight the idea of changing random aspects like having Chakotay as acting captain in one or two episodes with Janeway never mentioned or Having the original Doctor appear with maybe a character like Kes having a strange feeling or odd reaction but not enough of a reaction to make it a plot point would of been a pretty good setup for the year of hell. The problem with Star Trek other than the later seasons of TNG and DS9 is that they don't seem to realise that the show thrives when you've got long running subtle changes occurring whilst also keeping a weekly problem of the day format. The new Picard series has this written all over it. To make the longer story arch work I fear they'll skip the reasons to tune in and enjoy each episode as a standalone episode. From the first to the last each episode will not feel complete only leaving the viewer with more questions demanding that they binge onto the next episode. Somewhat like how Moffat handled Dr Who.... He's an amazing writter with great ideas, but he's lousy at creating resolution.

Voyager should have always been built around season long arcs. Instead of it trying to emulate TOSs Alien of the week premise they should have had each season feature a regional power. They almost did this or could have accomplished it between the Kazon/Vidieans, The Krenim, The Borg, The Void/Malon, The Undine, The Hirogen but the implementation was all over the place. It would have made a lot more sense and mapping out the delta quadrant powers borders would have been a lot more logical. You would also logically see prior seasons enemies in the beginning of new seasons as they move out of that space and you would see previews of new threats at the end of a season as they move into a new territory. Yes the borg likely would have had varying levels of presence through the entire run to illustrate their dominance over the delta quadrant. In fact I dare say Voyager should have ran for closer to 10 years in such a format but I guess the ratings were just not supporting it. The only thing that bugs me about Voyager is why a race like the Hirogen that were as close as they are to Alpha/beta quadrant and their nomadic nature only appear in Voyager. Especially with their comm tech being able to effectively reach the alpha quadrant. A race like that should have at least been rumored about. Someone in the A/B should have known of their existence even if it was not knowledge the Federation personally had. You see similar problems with the Gamma quadrant. Its like there is this quadrant sized void of nothing between each quadrant EXCEPT A/B where we know nothing of that area. Technically it likely means there are still considerable swaths of area and regional powers that have yet to be discovered. Like for example who is the threat on the Romulans back door that we never really see? I highly doubt that with the expansionist nature of the milky way species that there would be large swaths of interstellar space that major powers would not be swarming to fill.

I think the year of hell such impact because voyager was truly out gun and they could not out run out. they could not stop some where to for repairs. if voyager was all the year of hell they never made it back. some detail make sense like have ship look battered.

It was 98%, actually. Then, Annorax tells them it’s a do over. Heh, you’d think the crew wouldn’t have needed Tom’s encouragement to start mutinying after that one. IMO, you might’ve wanted to end with...well, the actual ending, with Annorax deciding to spend the day with his wife and setting aside a data pad with a diagram that looks a lot like the displays on the Weapon Ship. I liked the ambiguity therein, making us wonder if Annorax has gotten his priorities straight this time, or if he’s just taking a five minute break before causing this whole mess again. But, that’s just my opinion. What’s yours? ...sorry, couldn’t resist.

Ok anarax is both a level 1 and a level 5 at once. He is a split personality due to the loss of his wife AND living well past ones lifespan (being over 200 years since they did the first temporal incursion). He in his heart knew he could end his living hell by erasing the timeship from history but his level one ego just cockblocks him. His level five ego cry's he can fix this with one more calculation. This is why scientists make bad learner's from mistakes. We are prone to do it again and again until we find one way it works Everytime.

Janeway had evacuated the rest of the crew. As for shields, yes, SF shields are versatile. We've seen numerous times where there has been a gaping hole in the side of the ship, and yet no one dies. Think of ST: Generations, the scene where Kirk 'dies' in the E-B. Chekov & Co go to the deflector control, and see a massive gaping hole in the hull. Yet, Chekov & Co are all fine. The shields are holding back space and keeping the gasses in. Yes, oxygen, Co2, etc, are gasses.

The deflector shield work by keeping a large amount of particles stuck around the craft, that hold something akin to space lint... which keeps meteors from striking the ship while impulse engines are active. A few lore channels have gone over the mechanics of the shields.
