4. Check for "short" / "Ground" between stator and engine cases. Meaning - the stator windings are blown apart and are TOUCHING against the case. This means your volts are going to ground. Test for this by setting meter to Ohms, now cross the meter leads and you should hear a "beep"; now put one lead again the cases, and place the other in each hole of the stator plug. If you hear a beep it's the same as if you crossed the leads; meaning your stator windings are shorted / grounded.

Test is done by setting meter to Volt AC. Place both leads of the meter in the plug going to the stator. Make sure leads are not touching the metal engine case. Then start the bike and check for Volts AC. If you have 30-40 volts at 1000 rpm, then your stator should be good. As always, READ the MANUAL, then READ it AGAIN. Always verify a bad result to make sure your test is correct.

@ T.R. - I can't really say much about trouble shooting and would prefer not to get to wrapped up in offer such information as is could bog me down with more requests. The biggest thing is that you realize you have an issue. So, now that you have seen the videos, go for it. Open the primary case up and take a look. Brake pads can drag when bike is in motion; not when still. Primary noise will occur with the motor running and bike in neutral. Hope this helps, Scott

@pgleason1 - There are several very well written posts out there about how to trouble shoot your stator so will will not attempt to duplicate. I will say how "I" make a quick check my of bike. 1. Get rid of battery every four years. Note: Always check for volts first; this tests for both correct voltage and verifies no ground. 2. Check volts DC with bike running at battery; it should be 13.5-14.5 volts. If not, you bike is not charging. 3. Check volts AC at stator Plug. Should be 30-40 VAC

would the worn shoe cause a howling sound in the primary ??? i adjusting my chain with the proper tension and its howling like crazy!!! any idea?

In the primary i here a dragging noise, at first I thought it was maybe my brakes pads but after listening carefully, I found that it was coming from within the primary cover. Any idea what it might be?
