Oil filter housing is 1 and 1/4 inch socket too. Also, I found it easier to loosen the line above the oil filter (one TORX screw). And finally, the drain plug gasket hard to change, I guess you have to buy the PLUG with gasket if you want to replace. Oil turns black in a hurry for diesel, not sure why. THX again for taking the time to make video.

Two small corrections please. The oil capacity of this CJAA engine including the filter volume is 5.3 quarts or 5 liters (not 4.3 quarts as posted at 5:08) and the Socket to lift the filter cap is 32mm (not 32.5mm as posted at 1:04 ). Otherwise this is all good. I do find this to be a very useful video. One of the best.
@InTheGarageDIY2 жыл бұрын
It's 4.3qts, at least for the US spec Golf TDI. In reality though I think the best practice is to get the oil level close and then slowly add oil while checking the dipstick. The 32.5mm socket is what VW parts websites will sell to you as a specific oil filter socket, but 32mm or 1 1/4" socket will fit just fine. Cheers for the complement! www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/MC-10068943-3639.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjTw7XHu_j1AhXPnWoFHZmAB3kQFnoECCwQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1QmMwSHaoK_UdhGzWB5n_W

Yes! All the same tools/parts. You will need special oil due to the DPF. The spec is VW 507.00 and it's a 5w30. I recommend IDparts.com as the best place to get VW diesel stuff.

Excellent Video, I’ve only been running the VW recommended Castro Edge Syn 5w30 VW507.00.. my Jetta 6 2013 TDI is at 80k is it best to say with Castro? Also what are your thoughts on on running Opti lube XPD as a HPFP lubricant? I’m concerned about that pump, but the 2 filters I’ve done were clean and didn’t see any metal flakes.. do you recommend Opti lube?

My Golf is around 87k now and over those miles I've used Castrol, Pentosin, Mobil 1, Total, and Liquimoly. All 507 spec and they all performed well according to the used oil analysis I did on each one. I run Power Service (grey bottle) every fill up without issues. Optilube makes great stuff, I've even considered switching. Power service is just more available in my area.

Only thing I would do differently is let the oil filter drain while I drain the crankcase. Yes it's up, down, up down, up. But it would less messy allowing the filter time to drain.
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
On these 2.0L common rail engines the oil filter housing has a valve that prevents oil from draining into the crankcase when the filter is in place. This just ensures that both the filter and housing are always full of oil on cold starts. So regardless of when you drain the oil pan/crankcase, the filter housing will always be full of oil which is why you loosen the cap slowly to allow the oil to drain through the release valve as the filter comes out.
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
This is also why you can fill the housing with new oil once the filter is in place and it doesn't drain down into the oil pan @ 4:10

Picked up a 2014 CPO JSW TDI 6m last year. Had 16,400 miles. Now has ~26k miles. Going to do my 2nd oil change today. I also use 5-30 Liquid moly and Mann filters. I believe they are the best. $70us for oil and filter. Changing oil every 5k +/-... Not waiting the recommended 10k. I also built the same ramps outta 2×12s, mine are a little higher though. This is probably the best car I have ever owned. German quality at its finest. Was wondering if you knew why some of these TDIs require Add Blue and some don't. Thankfully mine does not... Great video BTW. Right to the point, no fluff, etc... Also, there is a recommended service interval at 30k. For a reasonably mechanical person with auto tools (me), do you recommend DIY or take in for service at shop or dealer?

507 is what I would use in the TDI if you still have all of your emissions equipment.
@garybeckwith5 ай бұрын
thanks for the vid. but i believe VW says we should be using 0w30 and correct me if i'm wrong but i think only their OEM oil will keep you from voiding your warranty, even if it has the 507 spec?
@InTheGarageDIY5 ай бұрын
They may have changed the recommendations since 2013. I used the factory Castrol 5w30 507 spec during the warranty period. The day after the warranty was up I deleted the DPF, added the Rawtek Turbo-back exhaust, and did a Malone stage 2 tune lol I wouldn't have a problem running 0w30 though. I've actually still been using the 507 oils even though there is no emissions equipment on the car anymore. I've been considering switching to plain old Rotella T6 5w40 for the better additive package. I did have the oil analyzed by Blackstone for the first 75-80k miles and wear metals were always super low. Engine still runs perfect at 106k miles, no issues with the car at all. Still love it.

@InTheGarageDIY4 жыл бұрын
Likely not a huge issue, I just do it while I'm in there. People argue that it prevents any oil starvation on start up, but lots of cars have the filter in a location where it's impossible to fill it up so I'm sure it's fine.

Is that a coolant bypass filter on the other side of your car? Or a catch can?
@InTheGarageDIY5 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed your comment. It's a secondary 2 micron fuel filter kit. Protects the fuel lines, tank, injectors, fuel rail..etc in case of a high pressure fuel pump failure. Contains all the metal shards so in case of a failure you're just out $600 for a new fuel pump and not $7000 for the entire fuel system.

@nicholassimmons97065 жыл бұрын
@@QLFProductions Yes I did get it back on. The front of the plastic belly pan was curved/ bent in such a way that it was pressing against part of the car; it was a while ago so I can't remember exactly what it was caught on. The angle made it impossible to slide it on as it was without this happening. So I just had someone else hold a flashlight so I could see what was going on because I anticipated this might be the problem. While they were holding the flashlight so I could see I used a bamboo gardening stake to press the plastic belly pan downward in front where it was getting caught while simultaneously pushing the belly pan forward into place.
