The Volkswagen Touareg V10 is one of the most unique, and most badass diesels ever produced. With a 5.0 litre twin turbo motor putting out 310 horsepower and a Viper beating 553 lbft of torque dropped into a perfectly proportioned full time 4WD platform.
This particular 2006 example was the first car I ever owned, and still one of my favourites to this day. They are often the subject of supposed horror stories, with these most often coming from people who have in fact never owned one, and likely never even driven the V10.
So what are these diesel monster SUV's like to drive and own, and should you consider one over something like a petrol Cayenne?...Let's review the Volkswagen Touareg 5.0 V10 TDi and find out!

I must say i agree with you it's all about the V10 for me. I bought one (Touareg v10) a couple of years back. I drove it home and started fixing it. After fixing it i just needed more so i bought my wife one, bought one more for me and fixed it up, i stopped at 4. These SUV's do need attention but when you have them going 110% believe me that's all you will drive. I take them in to the bush, mud fields. If you can work on them this is the way to go and it makes them affordable.

Well my father bought a 2003 VW Polo two months ago and the car was really awful, the big problem is with the seller he didn't mention anything about the car, my father drove the car he said it was nice and really good and after he bought it the car started to show the other face, we didn't see the car because most of the time it was in the shop to get it fixed, and with more fixing mean more money to throw on the car, after he fixed it i tried to tell him to sell it because its going to break down again and again but he said lets give it some time and. And now its alright he fixed it and everything is ok till now. Now what i mean with all that, used cars have a good side and a bad side, the good side they are cheap if you are low on budget, the bad side you don't know who was driving it or how he was driving it and that's a major problem actually.

Good review mate. Very honest and clear. I don’t think people are honest enough about the cost of repairs to these old cars. I had a 06 A8 - essentially the same car. The only real issue I had was £900 replacing 2 stuck rear callipers, which is a lot. Did 50k over 3yrs otherwise fine which made me think I could afford to run old expensive cars. Then had a 02 SL55 - £125k when new, bought for £12k. Spent £8k fixing things over 2yrs and sold it for £9k with still loads wrong. Bloody thing broke as soon as you took your eye off of it. Wish I’d found somebody being honest about the cost of repairs on the vids I watched before I bought it! I think the 00’s are the sweet spot for amazing, luxury cars on a budget but the repair bills are also pretty shocking.

Some of the early first gen touaregs has a lot of issues. Drove plenty of them when I worked in my local vw dealership. Didn’t work there long and I was just starting out at the time. But a great driving vehicle. Be prepared for the bills though. A lot of people who buy used luxury vehicles forget that it is still a very expensive vehicle at the end of the day.

The hand break issue could be just a case of a weakened hand break-pedal shock that prevents the pedal to travel all the way back to "disengage position", a 10-20 pound fix (the cost of the small shock) and 5-6 minutes to put it on (even less), been there done that. The air suspension issue is indeed major and can cost you about a 1000 pounds per corner. I got my 2005 V10 (sans DPF - thank God!) at 100k miles in 2013 from Germany for just 13k Euros and it's been great. Best car I've ever owned.

Can I get your opinions guys , I’m currently 16 and im looking at cars to buy , now I’ve been on autotrader and seen a Toyota Gt86 for £9600 now I’ve calculated in 6 years that car will be worth £3900 now I’ll be 22 when the car is worth that maybe even less , would you say that if I saved now it would be a good car to get ( I’ve also factored in insurance for when I’m 22 aswell)

If you really, I mean really want an opinion from someone else, take one from me, who's driven many cars for 15 years now: don't get that car. £9,600 for a beginner's car is way too much money. Do not buy a car that costs so much, that you couldn't replace it immediately, in case it breaks. That may sound like nonsense, because there are many people driving very expensive cars around and they couldn't afford buying the exact same car again, but don't be like them. It might be a company car or they are just careless. I've seen people throw away money after cars, it's unreal. Friends who lived in rented apartments and paid off loans on cars. If you want something nice, fun to drive but inexpensive, look at a Mazda Miata as your first car.

@@HSGAutomotive V6 and v10 diesel engines are very reliable engines and bulletproof, but only if they are looked after and controlled, and not just drive. I agree with you, most of the owners keep these cars and don't want to sell them, and when there is one who wants to sell, the price is high. But surprisingly, a car that offers more comfort and reliability than the Maybach or the Roll-Royce offered. Did you look for cars only in the UK or maybe the possibilities allow it, I would recommend looking for these cars in Central Europe.

That is such a shame, and a huge turnoff for me. Let me put it this way If someone were to sell me a Nissan GTR, in Dark blue, with the same, amazing performance as it had when it first came out, all of the practicallity, all of the legacy, all of that, for 50 Bucks, and the only drawback is the gas pedal could not be as responsive at some points, I would say hell no. People really underestimate how important reliability is for a car. I don't want to spend hundreds to thousands of bucks repairing a car I worked my ass on to purchase. This is a stealth reason why the Viper GTS is my favourite car. If something goes wrong, repairs for the car are very cheap here in NA because it's essentially built by a bunch of leftover parts from Dodge. So again, I'm sorry to hear about the Air Suspension issues from the Touareg, and I hope it doesn't diminish your love for the car.
