I love how you always add extra history and personal knowledge about these old amps. I used to install these “old school” amps back in 1990 for a small shop in Florida. I even went to the IASCA finals in Tempe AZ in 1990 or 1991. It was all so different back then.

My older brother had a 2 channel version of this amp. The Autotek 44. He had it running two 12” MTX Blue Thunder subs if my memory serves me right. I’m sure he was running the amp at 2 ohm mono, and eventually he killed the amp doing this. It was loud in the meantime though, especially being in a hatchback!! Thanks Big D!! I’m loving this memory lane series!!!

I can vouch that the older Autotek amps were something special. I had the Autotek 7300 BTS 300 watt(150X2) back then. I had it bridged to four 15" Kicker Competitions. Mono bridged was supposed to be 500 watts. They would jump over an inch and make my front windshield vibrate almost a quarter inch. It sounded amazing. I got so many compliments on it. Definitely not your average amp. I would easily rate them with Fosgates.

I've been in the Car Audio business since the late 80s. When these came out as you say it was hard to convince customers to buy over the Rockford amps, But if I remeber these were quite a bit more reliable. I ran them for a while and they were great. Alot of great memories back then!

All Zed built amps were fantastic and could go toe to toe with the big three back in the day: Orion, PPI, Rockford. My favorite would probably be the HiFonics VII series and the blue stripe BTS. Few years back a guy listed his Autotek BTS amps on Craigslist: 9050, 7100, 7050, 7054 and a broken 7150, all near mint with original plugs. Said they're old technology not like the new class D's. Took my offer of $180 for the lot. I've owned multiples of every blue stripe BTS amp and that champagne 9050. 9100 was the only amp I never could find.

Good morning anything was the 50 SHC the way were cleaner Amplifiers than any that was ever made if you’re running mid and eyes this is the way to go. I used to learn these from my base and was in a 200 W class. No one would win, but me when I did this back in the day a lot more to know about all of this, but these were the cleanest Amplifiers ever made. If you look at the ratings on them it’s pretty incredible. When you hear it in sound of tweeters and it’s incredible, especially with the plug-in modules I started running Jl Audio tweaks these really make a big difference, when I say big difference I mean cleaner problem is old music like Fleetwood Mac has that little hiss that she’ll always hear new music doesn’t have that it is crystal clear big difference in Bass from old to New so much to know about this stuff. I’m glad I got to experience it in my life, once you get your combs set for your base and some really nice mids and high it’s unbelievable but yes there is more to it than just that I hope someday I get to meet you big D I think you’re amazing

boy, seeing this Autotek on the bench brings back some memories for sure! I had a Autotek 9050 driving a pair of RF series 1 15s mounted isobarically inside the cab of a Dodge RAM 50. The outer sub's magnet stuck out between the Fiero bucket seats i salvaged for the ride. Loved the way it sounded, but the load wasn't low enough to exploit the full potential of the amp. The subs were louder when I had a Hifonics Hercules driving them... Sadly, the autotek 9050 was stolen out of my truck while i was in boot camp...

Yep, Autotek made some great apps. Back in the day one of the last systems I was running before I got into other things and stepped away from car audio was a pair of Jensen XS Bass 12's w/ a 900 watt Targa hexfet 6 channel amp bridged @ 4 ohm's with 6x9's & 6 5" door speakers and it sounded great. In some ways it sounded better than my new system with a 200 watt receiver, four 6 5 speakers in the doors and a 1000 watt XXX amp & two matching XXX 10" subs. It's clean, sounds really good and the subs hit surprisingly well however I still miss that Target amp and I think it would have done a lot better in this rig 🤣

What everyone is missing is that in the late 80's this was a pretty strong amp. Autotek's competitors weren't any more powerful for the same money. Also, the emphasis was still on SQ so, flexing trunks and rattling license plates wasn't a goal. I believe Autotek even had a high current competition series as well. These low power amps (by today's standard) paved the way for the crazy power we see in today's amps.

I wasn’t a big fan or Autotek .I liked RF for thrashing .PG for Power and SQ For 1-1/2 ohm US Amps They were a ZED amplifier. So of course it will make its rating I had a store from 1987-1997 . Autotek were good amplifiers But for the same $$$ You could get a RF,PG,Hifonics ,Orion or US Amps All would exceed their rating by 4-8 times .Its rated power Why buy a amplifier that is 22 watts That does 35 watts When you can get a old Punch 45 That will do 4-5 times its rated power Even run 16 even 32 speakers Thank you again for an amazing video Big D

Yeah, the power numbers back then were WAYYY lower, but it might surprise you how little power it takes to drive a set of door speakers. I recall having a Punch 40ix and it would push anything I connected to it and sound awesome. Also, I have a home amp with VU meters for the power output and even playing music really loud, I've not seen the meters exceed 15 watts per channel.

10:38 I grew up using a Technics home receiver to power all of my speakers and subwoofers (in my room obviously, not a car). Rated at 100w x2 it pushed the common style old school 10’s through 15’s pretty good. It was plenty to have the next door neighbors angry 😅. 100w real world power is even great for the door speakers in a car, plenty of volume and headroom over head unit power for normal music listening. Quite frankly, 100w will power an efficient sub(s) fairly well too and still get pretty loud.

bass and treble controls were important because of deck voltage and lack of a preamp

I've always used Rockford but I swapped a Punch 150 out for a 9050 and the 9050 ran circles around the Punch150.

Big D did you know you can use spade connectors with those screw terminals? You slide the spade under the whole screw and it's thread then tighten the screw against the spade and bottom plastic. I thought this was a gimmick but upon further inspection it looks like it was designed for that. Might not be all screw terminals

Didn't have 14.4v back in the day? What day? 1950? I've been playing with car audio since 1989 and the alternator was 14.4v back then.

Those are getting very hard to find. I would like to find some old Rodek amps, but I haven't seen one in years.

We didn't have much choice. Either spend a knot and try to be happy or pick up a Craig or sparkomatic and guaranteed miserable lol

I feel like box building was taken more seriously back then to really make use of the power and sound quality these amps put out.

I have an old amp at home i found at my dads after he passed last year. Its physically larger that my Orion Splx 3k, and i think it says 400 watts? Ill have to look at brand when i get in from work, i cant find anything on the company except a cassette deck they made long ago.
