What a beautiful design. The beetle timeless shape is beautiful because it barrows it's lines from nature. It really looks like a lady bug.

This has got to be one of the best VW rebuilds in the world. And I thought that I was fussy! Wow. Perfect conversion too. I would call this vehicle "detail perfect". Thanks for sharing...and when can I pick it up! 😉😀

My dad had 4 "bugs", the latest was a '69. They were slow, loud, with a particularly shrill valve noise, and stank due to running rich. How wonderful these are. The smell of a VW interior was so unique.

Takes me back to 1969 and my first car was a 66 V/W beetle. Red with white interior. 1300 on the lid, the only year with that engine. I love the concept, saving these old cars from the scrap heap and giving them a second life.

My first car was the 1966 VW Type 3 Fastback. I knew even then that I did not want the bug. To elaborate: my dad had one of the earliest VW's to be imported to the U.S. , a 1950 bug with the butterfly rear windows and electro-mechanical turn indicators which flipped up on each side. As a kid I both loved that car and knew all of its foibles. Besides I had seen the Karmann Ghia and really wanted that one despite its low seating position. However the Fastback had a bigger engine(1600cc), more room for passengers and two trunks. It shares that distinction with the Tesla but beat it to the punch by decades. Also the Type 3 had a better heater, and had a subframe to isolate engine noise....a little. In the twelve years I drove that car I used every trick I could think of to get better mileage, including lowering that subframe with spacers to use bigger rear tires while preserving the negative camber I had added to improve cornering. The conversion of that two carburetor engine to fuel injection was a nightmare. The fuel needed to have a return-line added to the gas tank, and an electric fuel pump fitted where none had been. To top it off, I had to convert the whole electric system to 12v from the original 6v. That would have required a new flywheel to match the tooth pattern to the 12v starter, but failing to get the old flywheel off, I was convinced that the counter EMF of the 6v starter would be sufficient if starting was quickly accomplished before it burned out.... It was, mostly. The hotter camshaft and twin intake port heads(polished) from the rebuild to fuel injected gave it better speed, along with better mileage and better performance at altitude. The bigger tires had more bite. I do not miss the monthly valve adjustments and distributor gap adjustments or the spark plug checks even the fuel injected engines of that period needed. That fuel injection was the first electronic injection in a production vehicle because VW had such bad emissions, on a parts per million basis. Cadillacs that met the spec had more smog per mile by far, but the ppm measurement was lobbied into existence without considering engine size. Surprisingly, the CAFE standards for mileage along with the EPA smog requirements have taken away those dutiful periodic maintenances and given us much better performing cars. Part of the reason we have taken so long to go electric. Back when that Bug was first sold, a San Diego utility was developing an electrified Karman Ghia. I might have bought one then if they had not been stymied by the Automobile manufacturers. My electronics shop teacher in high school was an old WWII Submarine Sailor and we knew about NiCad batteries from him. Those and the NiMh variants would have come a lot quicker had the stifling not been so successful. We learned about catalytic converters in that high school too. It took almost two decades of obfuscation before the oil companies and car companies would allow that maybe they could get the lead out of gas to use them. I hope this history lesson has got your attention.

I just love it. But the hubcaps should not be baby moons but be the flat style for a ‘66 and the wheel colours are mixed up, the inner part with the bolt holes should be in satin charcoal and the outer part should be ivory. Just an authentic detail though because your work is amazing!

@zelectric but the hubcaps and wheels are on display for anyone to see, while the motor is hidden away under the engine cover. So I think Steve K makes a valid point. My 2 cents. 🙂

Have Fond Memories of the Old VW's, I owned two of them-a 1965 that I used as a Mud Machine and a New 1972 Super Beetle. The only problem was the Constant Valve Adjustment if you wanted the Engine to last and the Heater/ Defrost was Terrible also no Air Conditioning was available. If you Took care of them, they were very dependable transportation. Oh the 1972 VW cost me $2070 but it had Cragger Mags and Chrome Performance Muffler and Extra Factory Speakers...

I was raised on the classic Herbie movies, so from the earliest of ages I was programmed to be attracted to bugs. This seems like by far the best way to own one. I love how the electric conversion solves the reliability and performance issues of the original vehicle. I would not miss most of the convenience features of modern cars, such as power windows and especially keyless entry and ignition (push-button start). I hate this kind of computerization of modern cars, which makes them susceptible to being hacked and otherwise manipulated by someone else with a computer. About the only thing that I would miss are modern safety features, and in particular airbags. And yes, the metal dashboard looks great, but the reason why automakers stopped putting it in vehicles has to do primarily with safety in an accident.
