Me and the the wife like to go on walks in the evenings.
This time, I decided to hit "record" and ask her some questions inspired by recent comments.
Thanks to Mike Burk for the thoughtful comment that gave me the idea for this video.
If you have ever wondered about Taiwan or what it is like to live here as a foreigner, this might be some help. I was being as transparent and honest as possible.

Thank you Skyler. Man, this was genuinely fascinating and eye-opening. I honestly enjoyed this video more than anything I have seen in quite a while. I hope it gets the views it deserves. Big thanks also to your wife, she was a superstar. 🙏 👍

I very nearly didn't post it since I was having so much trouble with trying to record it, then trying to get it transferred to my computer to edit, then noticing that bad framing, etc. I am happy it turned out alright.

It's about time that you included my Daughter-in-Law in one of your videos. I had forgotten how beautiful she is, and how fun it is to hear her speak her mind and her heart. Great video! Maybe I need to think more seriously about moving to Taiwan . . .

Gosh I want to live or at least visit Taiwan so baaad now!! Thanks a lot for both of your insights, honest testimonies are so precious, this video is an actual gift. I was wondering how you manage language barriers ? Have you learned Mandarin, if so how difficult was it ? My grandpa used to say "love is the best way to learn a language" so I guess that having a wife who speaks Mandarin definitely helps aha! Another thing I was wondering about is the feeling you get from China ? Are people concerned ? Anyways thank you again for taking the time to shoot this video, looking forward to the next one :)

Mandarin is the official language, but old people will also typically speak Japanese (since Taiwan used to be part of Japan) and "Taiwanese" (more traditional, people who live outside cities or up in the mountains, or are aboriginal will speak it). Though, Taiwan is actually very accommodating to visitors who don't speak Mandarin. People will actually go out of their way to find a way to communicate with you (even if it is just pulling out their phone and using Google translate). These days, more and more public places have English options, somewhere. Of course, life is easier if you speak a bit of Mandarin. But, it's not a deal breaker. I speak enough to get by. At my job, none of my coworkers or my boss speak English. As far the China thing goes, I will just summarize by saying that nobody is worried about it. There are a lot of factors, the majority of which most people in the western world just aren't aware of. I think in recent years, Western media just started spamming stories about it and really twisting the information in an effort to get the public onboard with the idea of potentially having a conflict with China. But, no, nobody here is really worried about it.

Xie xie -- very nice vid. enjoyed learning a bit about life in Taiwan. i've seen several of your vids about life in Taiwan--enjoyed them all. loved hearing about the different interesting foods you've tried (i've had fish-eyes in Chinatown in NYC---don't bite the lens! don't ask!!). Actually, dated a girl from Taiwan during college---her father didn't approve (it was decades ago--times were diff), so nothing came of it. so, as one of your older channel subscribers (in my 70's and like you, ex-military---hence the bro/brother address sometimes) one thing that is of interest to me about Taiwan is medical care for the elderly. can you speak about that a bit pls. also, in terms of land and a house, what would $500K-$650K USD get someone? prob depends upon location? lastly, the pizza, don't wanna go to war with you, bro, but i hope it's Neapolitan-style thin crust (like in NYC and New Haven CT) you're getting in Taiwan!!! tell me bout the pizza there, pls. thx.

Man, the more I learn about you the more I think we have in common, lol. Healthcare, here, is amazing. On so many levels. It is actually one of the things that I appreciate most and is one of the first things I mention when it comes to the idea of moving back to the US. I will talk about it in a video, since it deserves its own spotlight. Land is very expensive, but of course the location dictates a lot. If you decided that you specifically wanted an "American style" house, where the house was built "out" and not "up" (think a ranch style house, with a few thousand square feet across a single floor, vs a New York style house where it is narrow but several stories high) and you also wanted a big yard, a driveway, garage, etc... man... you would have to be incredibly wealthy. It would likely cost several million US dollars for even a very modest setup. However, if you don't need a big yard surrounding the house and you don't mind the smaller footprint, vertical construction, then you could get an incredibly nice house for $500,000. And yes, the pizza here is New York inspired. Neapolitan-style thin crust. They use traditional pizza ovens. I think you would like it (I haven't met anyone who doesn't).

@@SkylerKing many thanks for the informative reply. appreciate it. yeah, learned about you early on, so some things definitely in common. apart from age diff, i'd be more the mini-SK version at best. except for height, weight, hair-color, and age, we might be identical twins!!! another diff, you do reps with more weight than my younger days 1RM. but there are other diffs. for example you were a power-lifter. i was a wannabe. of course, no matter how hard i would train and compete there would be one 'thing' stopping me at 2 diff weight classes...that one 'thing' had a name too: Lamar Gant. nuff said.

Wow, awesome talk about Taiwan! What a glowing testimony about what might be a hidden gem of sorts for Asia! I want to visit, and maybe even possibly retire in Taiwan, because of how great it sounds and the cost of living =] The latter being very important. As someone who lives in the states but visits Hong Kong often because extensive family lives there, I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to living in a place like Taiwan...because it sounds very much like Hong Kong, the food and transportation especially. The way you describe Taiwan, is what Hong Kong used to be. But now HK is a very expensive place to live in. Crime has gotten worse it seems too, and I would never let my younger nieces and nephews walk alone. So....Taiwan might be my desired version of HK, with many of the pros, and much of the cons removed. I seriously want to check out Taiwan now! Thanks again for this video, it was great hearing about what makes the country special =] The Taiwan government should pay you for advertising for them lol

I used to go to Hong Kong several times a year. I don't go anymore, though. Too much has changed, unfortunately. I have also met quite a few people who now live in Taiwan but are from Hong Kong originally. They typically have similar stories about how they ended up in Taiwan.

Thank you. I think it's easy to view people on KZfaq as just "a channel" or "a type of content" and forget that there are real people behind those channels. So, a comment like this, where you let me know that you watch more than just one video based on one topic, then proceed to compliment me on a personal level, is very much appreciated.

Great video. I watched from beginning to end. It sounds like my kind of place. I have 2 questions: 1. How easy would it be to get around without an interpreter? If you don’t speak Mandarin, can you get by with Google Translate? Do a lot of people speak some English? 2. How did people treat you two being an interracial couple? My dad was from Africa and my mom is American, and when they moved to Africa, his family loved and embraced her. Still, there can be a bit of a stigma when marrying outside of the traditional culture. That seems to be universal. I wondered how the locals reacted to her marrying a non-Taiwanese and how they treated you two when you first moved there.

Hey oldschool, happy to see you back. These are great questions and I think I might address them in a future video. But, a very short answer would be; 1) Most people do not speak English, but they are very friendly and will go out of their way to establish some type of workable communication (even if it is just google translate on their phone). 2) Statistically, there is always going to be someone, somewhere who doesn't like the idea of interracial couples. Here, though, it's typically not an issue. People are more likely to think it's "cool and different and interesting" than anything else. It has actually resulted in a lot of funny conversations.

As an Australian I would choose to live in Taiwan well beyond choosing to live in the United States. The United States is so far down the list in terms of my personal desirability.
@SkylerKing

Yeah, to be completely honest, I would choose most of the places I have been over the US. Australia seems to already have a pretty friendly relationship with Taiwan, too. A lot of Taiwanese people go there for vacation or for work programs.
