Good video and review of the device 👏 I'm using this Satmap Active 20 since January 2019 ( no much in 2020 because of the lockdown ) and I'm very happy with. It's a good & reliable GPS 👍 working well even in challenging conditions ! 👌 Petr

Hi, just finished my first walk trying out the Active 20 I recently purchased from you - thought I had a problem when the screen appeared black. After removing my polarized sunglasses the screen was revealed in all it"s beauty, very happy so far.

Nice walk... and a brilliant unit. I have it myself, and it’s never let me down. I used to own Garmin stuff, but I find those very hard to configure, with too many options, and often somewhat unstable. This unit is very much for walking/hiking (in rough conditions), and maybe cycling. Combination of touch screen and physical buttons is great. Only downside is that changing cards is a bit fiddly... and the rubber enclosure for the usb input is ... well.. crap. You’re bound to loose it sooner or later. Oh and one more thing: they’ve got very good, personal online support, and bugs are actually fixed if you send those in (sooner or later).

It's always a hard one - Garmin or SatMap, both have their strong and weak points and you have touched on a number of these. It's funny you mention the bung issue, on one of my edits of this video I did mention it, but decided it should end up on the clipping room floor as these videos should be looking at the benefits of each of the GPS units.

Hi John. Thanks for the review. Would it be possible for you to put up a little tutorial covering some of the more advanced features and the options available in Expedition 2 for route planning, for example, you mentioned the snap to track feature ? Rob.

Hello. Im considering buying this. 1) does it float? 2) does it have any temperature features? Also do you know of any GPS unit that has tide levels? It seems strange that no GPS has tide tables that use GPS, time and location. You can even buy mechanical tide clocks but nothing electronically.

Tony, sadly no 'outdoor gps unit' has tide times built in. The Garmin chart plotters and watches made for the water will have this info, but sadly I don't know much about those products.

Hi, I’m new to the whole gps thing as I’ve always used a map and compass. If you get the platinum active 20 GB (currently £600 on there site) would it have the same kind of maps as the os explorer? Also is there any monthly/yearly subscriptions required for the route planning etc. shown in this video and keeping the map up to date? Thanks.

Yes, the Platinum version has 1:10k, 1:25k and 1:50k OS maps with the 25k being the same as the explorer OS map. The Xpedition 2 route planning software is £40.00/ year, but don't forget you can use ours for FREE - gpstraining.co.uk/pages/ordnance-survey-route-planner. What's the best map to have on the sat map active 20? 1:25 or 1:50 OS Map SD card, only the UK 1:250 ??

The Platinum map card which has 1:10l, 1:25k and 1:50k OS maps. this is the best option. I hope this helps.

I still use an active10, I didn't see you calibrate the compass is this automatically done when starting up

Well spotted, sadly no automatic compass calibration on any current Outdoor GPS unit.

Sadly your premium subscription with OS does not work on any Outdoor GPS Unit

Sadly we don't have any SatMap Active 12 units anymore, if I remember though the interface is very similar to that of the 20. BUT, we still have a full training course for the SatMap Active 12 in the online resource with many of those training videos being free to access - gpsonlinecourse.co.uk/
