I walk through the neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens. This section is known to be a major shopping district, and comparable to Brooklyn's Fulton Street. It is also a major transit hub, with connections to numerous buses, NYC Subway Lines on the E, F, J, and Z trains, Airtrain to JFK Airport, and the Long Island Railroad.
From Wikipedia:
"Jamaica is a middle-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is mainly composed of a large commercial and retail area, though part of the neighborhood is also residential. Jamaica is bordered by Hollis to the east; St. Albans, Springfield Gardens, Rochdale Village to the southeast; and South Jamaica to the south; Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park to the west; Briarwood to the northwest; and Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Hills, and Jamaica Estates to the north.
Jamaica was settled under Dutch rule in 1656 in New Netherland as Rustdorp. Under British rule, Jamaica became the center of the "Town of Jamaica". Jamaica was the first county seat of Queens County, holding that title from 1683 to 1788, and was also the first incorporated village on Long Island. When Queens was incorporated into the City of Greater New York in 1898, both the Town of Jamaica and the Village of Jamaica were dissolved, but the neighborhood of Jamaica regained its role as county seat. Today, some locals group Jamaica's surrounding neighborhoods into an unofficial Greater Jamaica, roughly corresponding to the former Town of Jamaica."

Action Kid thank you for setting the record straight regarding the origin of the geographical name, Jamaica. Many people - even many New Yorkers and Queens residents - mistakenly believe that it came from the Caribbean population living there. Thank you for straightening that out

For those who are from Queens. You can see that Jamaica Avenue is being gentrified. The new high rise buildings on Archer, the new Burlington and H&M there. Jamaica center or to us natives "THE AVE " is no longer the mom and pop, hustle man, let's make a deal shopping area as it was in the days of old. They're making it to look like Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Five more years it will look like Willimsburg. I'm just saying.

Maybe he can save up $400 to see a thearpist so he can deal with being afraid of walking around a dangerous neighborhood. I mean everyone knows that it is abnormal to be scared of wonderful dangerous neighborhoods. Baby steps first try the Hamptons then work for yourself up to neighborhoods like the south Bronx.

Wow! Thank you ActionKid for the walk down memory lane. Even though Jamaica & Suphtin have changed so much. I left Jamaica, Queens in 1989, haven't been back even for a visit.(not that I didn't want to)I was totally lost where you started off. When you got to Kings Park I started remembering certain places. That was long walk. I use to walk that walk many times. Not now though. Well thanks again for sharing...✌🏽

This area has a lot of character to it, which is what I like about this area and other areas like it in New York City. Great video of an interesting and character-filled offbeat area; I love how you can buy transit tickets from a ticket machine *_on the street_* in New York, a thing that I wish we had here in Toronto.

Left NY over 50 years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed this Doesn't look like the Jamaica Ave I knew. I noticed he walked by the Tabernacle church. Wish he had looked up because that was probably the old Valencia Theater I used to go to. It was a beautiful building designed by an architect who designed only 7 of these. I went to one in Kalamazoo, MI and it was so much like the Valencia but now used for concerts. Thanks for the memories!
