Our pear is grafted to a thorny pear (non-fruiting) because the roots are more hardy than a Bradford pear, so it's more than likely not any kind of tree you want growing from the base of the 2nd fuyu. They send out trees like that bare rooted in the winter when they are dormant...it enables reasonable shipping across the country. I got a bunch of hardwoods given to me bare rooted last winter that I put in pots that will end up on the farm. BTW....deer love fuyu and it thrives in our Zone 9 Florida climate. I feel like there should have been some Meg backhoe footage in here somewhere....🤔 Trommel is a rock star.... 🤩

The trommel hopper - Consider making a tractor bucket sized receiver with long steep chute to the trommel. Inside the chute have sliding metal gates to deliver the precise load you desire. This would allow the tractor to do o dump and go for a second load while a second person manages the gates.

Enjoyed your trommel build (I worked at a factory that produced 500 hp trommels). It works great. If you want to use it for soil or compost, performance will increase if you add mixer bars inside the drum; like two or three pieces of one inch angle iron equally spaced inside the length of the drum.

"Random plastic containers" come from the "recycle & reuse" bin! 😉At least that's where they always come from at my house! My garden pots for seedlings are nearly all made of recycled yogurt cups. I'm curious to learn how long your welded wire mesh lasts, given the beating it will take from the rocks you're tumbling. If it fails, it's cheap and easy to replace, of course. If you want to replace it with something stronger, you might try expanded metal mesh. It's much tougher, since it has no welds to fail. The welds on that welded wire mesh break easily. I use it as a garden fence. Too often, when deer try to jump the fence and hit it, the welds break and leave a mangled mess.

You kids sure work good together. I was so happy to see that you listened to Meg and tried her idea and didn't just shoot it down. I think that proved two things, #1 Jon your a very smart young man. #2. Women are right and are very well gifted at problem salving. Good job on the upgrade, smart thinking, consider raising it. This will give ample room for the products from the trammel, park the trailer at the end for rocks and access to the dirt below. We all need a Meg sometimes, love your content, keep them coming.

So happy to see a new post - I was beginning to worry about you. I really enjoy watching you guys.

I am also planning on using two automotive solid rear axles and let the trommel run on the tires. Both differential pinion gears could be driven with a single drive shaft and chains. Rear axles usually have 3:1 to 4:1 ratios so that would already provide part of the required reduction. Not suggesting that you rebuild yours, just putting this out there for anyone who wants to build a strong trommel. The axles would be placed longitudinally with the trommel resting on the "V" between the tires.

Answer to the washer problem: use a tiny bit of Elmer's glue to glue the washers-wheel-washers sandwich together. Then you can easily insert it into the bracket and slip the bolt in.

I've been gardening in Mt. since the 50's and I think you're right about the grafting deal and I'd be mighty suspicious of those tree shoots, too.

Concrete truck chute for your trommel. The graft stock is growing on your damaged tree. Get it outta the ground before it roots to deeply. A replacement is in order. Read up on bare root stock planting. Bare root nursery stock has been around for decades. Get your tree shipped while its still cold. They ship better and will wake up with the spring. Once the budding process begin, results can be sketchy for transplants.

I would use black plastic drainpipe around the fruit trees instead of the wire cages. - it really protects the trunk better and it's easy to remove when the trees are big enough. Also, it helps prevent the root stock from sending up shoots.

Ya done great! Im proud of ya. Now the fun part. What works best in industry is a conveyor belt with a hopper over it. Basically use the conveyor as the floor. Add an adjustable "striker bar" to control how much material comes out of the hopper and your in business. Slowly add more and more material at a time until everything clogs up and stops! After you manually dig enough out to get goin again you will know how hard to push it. A little caution though. Belting can be repaired from rips but but those rocks can be sharp. Know before you get started that rollers are not cheap. If you have an asphalt or concrete plant anywhere close to you talk to them. Most times they would be glad to show you around so you can visualize what you're going for. Good luck! 😎

Hi Guy's looking good, try a nylock hex nut on the skateboard wheel bolt. That way you can allow the washers to run free.

Don't forget that you will need a way to clear all the dirt and small stones that fall underneath the trommel. I am thinking something on wheels that you could pull out and move over to one side before emptying. Great work and loving every episode !!

You could use a pulley tensioner instead of a clutch. That would make it easer to control the rotational speed

If you tip the trommel so the output is 6 to 10 inches lower it will be faster , also put a lip at the out put so that it lifts the rock out.

From hoot to atta boy/girl is a term well meant. Great stuff, now a smaller bucket on tractor so its not as hard to get it full and dump it into your hopper feeder. Your close to making a unit!

John is correct - You need a conveyor (of sorts). A hopper the size of the tractor bucket should feed the trommel. Where the hopper meets the trommel (removing the stabilizing skate wheel) , the lip of the trommel will stick out (maybe even in two places) to scoop material out of the hopper. A portion of the intake of the trommel will be blocked to hold back the majority of the hopper load until the scoop rotates around a grabs a portion and sends it through the trommel.

Good job. I would just ask for my money back. Even a small tree should have leaves if it’s going to grow properly. One other thought, they sell really nice safety glasses at Lowes. I think it was 7 and some change for either clear or the sun glass type. Your on such an exciting adventure. I envy the journey and your youth. Later.

expanded metal, one sheet, measure, cut, not all small pieces to fit the holes.it is heavy, you can choose your thicknes, /holes size.

It is imprecise to say that a key and keyway are "supposed to keep the 2 together." The purpose of a key and keyway is to ensure that the rotational forces of the driveshaft are transferred without fail to the attachment, whether it is a clutch or a direct drive pulley. If you just tightened the allen screw down without the key in a keyway, eventually (especially under load) the shaft would slip inside of the clutch or pulley, but with a key and keyway, the only way for it to slip is if you shear the key. The way you assembled it without the key will eventually cause uneven wear on the shaft, imbalance and eventual engine failure when it is under load and the clutch slips off because it isnt keyed on. Also, you can get snap ring pliers with interchangable heads at Harbor Freight for 5$, as well as loctite for $2.50, the bottle is small but mine has lasted me at least 10 years now

On your precision tree it you have new growth below the graft lint that is suckers from the root stock they used, whatever that was. If you had used trees from Stark brothers nursery they guarantee their trees to grow for one years. I had a problem with a apricot tree and the replaced it on problem.

You can use fingernail polish as locktite or spray paint bolt and assemble while wet.

You were right, the Kaki trees are engrafted on a more different trunk. There are various reasons behind you do this: one is many fruit plants grown from their own seeds are randomly hybridized, so you will not get the original variety and quality. As a consequence you multiply your plants by engraving on other trunks which fit. Another reason to engrave is, resistance on soil and pest situation. Wines for example in Europe often grow on American trunk varieties due to better resistance against the grape phylloxera, which damaged in the 19th century wide ranges of European wine cultivation.

FYI the foot switches can often be wired NO (normal open) or NC (normal closed) by swapping a wire press to turn on is probably how it comes, but can be wired press to kill... but must stay on it to keep it off)

the switch is made to hold so if it hangs up or jumps you can shut it off befor it hurts you or cuts a finger or something off

I have to agree, everyone should have a Meg. Maybe he who has one should listen more often? Don't know where Meg got her engineering training but the triangle is the strongest form there is. You have taken advantage of it on the end legs of your trammel and I noticed the corners are reinforced that way as well. I know everyone who is doing hates to have kibitzers telling them after the fact how they should have done this or that, but eventually you will have to rebuild your trammel. When you do you might consider attaching the lower end of your arm that holds the upper rollers with small hinges so that you can remove the drum and replace it if needed due to wear or accident without grinding away welds. You could run an angle arm from the other side (triangle again) to hold it in place. Great work any way. Love what you are doing and envy you more than just a bit.

Outlet diameter of hopper will control flow rate into the trommel, conveyor is for trommel discharge end.

You built your trommel, I am still thinking about mine. My design has four or more long small angle iron pieces welded on the inside for the full length of the trommel. This would help strengthen the trommel plus help break up lumps. Just putting it out there.

You might need to widen the road to the house site more because you will, at the very least need to use your truck with a long trailer to get the sawed lumber to the build site, unless you milled the lumber on site.

Use an auger in a tube connected to the bottom of the hopper. fill the hopper and the auger with gravity will move the fill to the trommel.

Use an old kids slide at the handle you want and build a support to keep it there so you can dump material and let gravity feed

Put a slide gate on the button of 're hopper to regulate flow of find an old grain cart with a bad axle

Lastly, you might wish to read up on green wood shrinkage, cupping and bowing. There are a lot of advantages to drying . I believe green wood is heavily saturated with water.

if you have issues with the rock and soil not being properly separated you can add angled ribs inside the tromel to help agitate the material more or just loops inside to slow down how quickly the material moves through the tromel so it has more time to separate, you can also change the angle the tromel is tilted at. But this video is a year old so that may not be relevant anymore.

Suggest taking a clothes dryer apart check out how it functions possibly get idea for you trummel operations to keep from lifting out postion

Sorry to learn that you cut your finger on your hand grinder. An acquaintance once cut himself on one, looked up and said, sardonically: "I guess that's why they call it a hand grinder." I once mangled my hand using a wire brush in a hand grinder. Now I have a scar, in the shape of Studebaker's old "S" symbol. My scar matches the hub of my steering wheel now! I like your idea about using a foot pedal to control your grinder. I've never liked the switches on mine either. You could use a "Foredom electronic speed control pedal" which you can find on ebay for roughly $40. They are nice because they are "plug and play" You can simply plug your grinder cord into one and go to work. I don't know whether the motor on your grinder would function properly using one, though. Some electric motors work with a speed control, but some motors bet hot and eventually burn up.

Now you need to get a UTV with a bed and tow hitch for the trailer

The trommel could be considered an inverse rotating screw with interior threads. Imagine alternating crescent plates inside the trommel angled toward the discharge end. As the trommel rotates it moves the load to the next plate. Let me know if you need more details (or drawings as I am a retired engineer).

Mail polish works as a substitute

Root stock of likely same type of tree, having a stronger rooting characteristics. Idk details, however many fruit bearing trees are grown in similar fashion, personally know of citrus being same type of rootstock grafting or whatever the terminology is.

Instead of a conveyor belt to feed the trommel, consider keeping an eye out for a discarded digger auger or a farmer's grain auger as an alternative method to feed the barrels with product... Have the auger turn in an V shaped wood-plank hopper that holds a tractor bucket load of stone from your quarry... I'm certain you two could figure out a way to use the existing motor/pulley set up to drive the auger so it loads the gravel base product directly into the end of the trommel . . of .

How about guards around all the belts so if anyone accidentally falls into your contraption, the damage will be minimal?

Redeem your damaged fuju tree warranty. Adopt a pruning strategy. Hint: Consider topping off the new tree just above the four strongest branches. Train each branch to an exclusive domain of sunlight. Never cross branches. For family consumption height - nevetrr need a ladder. Not a commercial operation. Low branches are best .

Normally, astringent persimmons are used as the rootstock for grafting because astringent persimmons are stronger and grow faster than fuyu persimmons. Therefore, leaving the astringent persimmon with the top part dead will work well for pollination of the Fuyu. Incidentally, planting and growing seeds of fuyu persimmons will not result in a sweet fuyu persimmon, but an astringent astringent persimmon.

Let the tree seller know, they will likely replace those trees.

Do you anticipate any problem when you need to replace the belt on the trammel?

You should fine a tree close then you will get a root ball. Through the mail you get a stick they tell you it will grow but it doesn’t, on most cases and it takes years for it to bear fruit.

The clutch is good! How often will you have to oil the engine shaft with the clutch? Is it something you could put in a grease zerk on the end and pump a shot of grease in? Don't give Meg too much credit on the wedge - she may use it against you in the future! I'm impressed with your work!

how can I make that a round pipe going all the way around to the other side and have another skateboard wheel on the other side so if you fit right in there nice and tight
