Filmmaker and director of media production company Wandern House, Emma Bryceland-McCourt, has worked with Atomos products for many years. So, when she was given the chance to take a first look at the new Ninja Ultra and Atomos Connect module, it was an opportunity she couldn't refuse.
The picturesque Loch Lomond Lake in the Scottish Highlands seemed the ideal backdrop for Emma to put the Ninja Ultra through its paces. Even with plenty of natural sunlight, Emma was still able to clearly view her footage on the Ninja’s high-definition 1000 nit display. The Ninja Ultra is very portable, can be mounted on to hand-held rigs, yet above all lightweight, which means it is the perfect travelling companion.
The Ninja Ultra harnesses the existing built-in tools of the Ninja V but is more responsive thanks to the new AtomOS 11 operating system. “It has all the monitoring tools I know and love, but it’s faster with more features. When you team that with the Atomos Connect module, it’s a gamechanger,” said Emma.
The new RecordAssist feature enables Emma to work remotely, yet still have greater control over the footage she captures. It was because of this that she was able to take a moment to reflect on the beauty of ‘golden hour’ over the Scottish countryside. “I can dial in a time for my Ninja to record, and totally trust that it won’t miss the action,” she explained.
While recording takes place, the Atomos Connect module simultaneously sends proxy files via the cloud back to Emma’s studio. This means the postproduction process is quicker, as she can get a head-start editing the footage without having to wait for filming to finish. Excited to use the Ninja Ultra and Atomos Connect further, Emma said: “I can’t wait to do even more with this set-up and tap into its capabilities.”

It's still missing a USB-C out so I can record to my own SSD drives. I was hoping otherwise, there were quite a few features I like on the Ultra.

All software of ninja, ninja+ and ultra MUST have common false color, el zone etc. options which are very critical to match exposures of different cameras. Imagine a set (which would have been very proud moment for Atomos) having a ninja, a plus and a A cam ultra..If the A cam is exposing using EL Zones, how can you expect the B and C cam's to reference perfectly to the same exposure system?

To achieve the desired exposure uniformity with your specific configuration, it's imperative to confirm that both your B and C cameras are equipped with compatible ATOMOS EL Zone recorders. By doing so, utilizing a supported EL Zone-capable device for your B camera will ensure precise exposure referencing. The main difference between the Ninja and Ninja Ultra is the IC3 chip in the Ultra, which allows higher frame rate recording and even 8K recording in Apple ProRes RAW, whereas the Ninja is limited to 6.2K. The Ultra also has new features like Dual Record, SDI Cine and 4K NDI TX available when combined with the Atomos Connect module. That puke green color on the Ninja is hideous. Why would they do that???

Hi Troy, Thanks for your question. If you're referring to the False Color engine being displayed on the device at TC 1min 13 secs, they are using this to better expose the footage. The false color mode shows your different exposure values as different colours on the display to visually manage exposure. The False Color Scale on the left-hand side of the screen is a legend that correlates brightness values in the image with specific colours. The numbers in this scale represent the IRE%. As an example, mid-grey is present between 44-47 IRE (green), underexposed footage is -7 to 2 IRE (purple), and overexposed footage is from 96-109 IRE (bright orange). @@AtomosChannel I think Troy is talking about the brownish color the unit itself. I know this may be silly, but this unit would probably be higher up on my wish list if it was just black or grey.
