In this episode, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and journalist Jo Confino, talk about how to find peace in ourselves and to encourage peace in the world during times of war. They remember Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, who himself lived through a conflict - the Vietnam War - yet found a way to peace, and to become an activist for transformation.
They also discuss inherited war traumas; the importance of maintaining compassion and balance during these times; the limits of compassion; going beyond our ‘roles’ and ‘labels’; chanelling anger; practicing when we feel ‘on the edge’; racism and discrimination; coming back to our humanity; cultivating love, peace, and nonviolence, every day. And: can we bear arms without hatred?
Brother Phap Huu shares his own family’s experience of the war in Vietnam and, subsequently, as refugees; Thay’s creation of a nonviolent movement in wartime; and surprising insights from a retreat for Palestinians and Israelis in Plum Village.
He also delves into recognizing the thoughts that manifest during wartime; taking refuge in the energy and wisdom of the practice; coming back to our human nature during hard times; nonviolence as a way, not a tool; grounding and moderation; becoming a refuge for those who are suffering; teaching the awareness of interbeing; and how to not drown in our own despair.
Jo considers the difficulty of transforming our feelings about the war through practice (such as not becoming consumed by the news, not taking sides, being equanimous); inherited war trauma; the transformational power of vulnerability; and the perils of hierarchies.
The episode ends with a chant on peace recited by Brother Phap Huu.

Thank you so much, Brother Phap Huu and Jo Cofino. The current war in Ukraine will probably not be the last war but this talk gives me hope for what could be called World Peace One, one person at a time. May there be no World War Three. Thich Nhat Hanh taught me about the concept of being peace to the best of my ability. For that I am grateful. A Noble Truth is a sacred creed (Bob Dylan) Please call me by my true names, so I can hear all my cries and my laughter at once, so I can see that my joy and pain are one. (Thich Nhat Hanh)

I am originally from Syria, and this war was a trauma for me as my family became refuge after 2011 war. I am angry and try hard to be mindful but it is too hard. The pain is strong and sadness overcome my heart. I stay in silence and pray hard for peace and blessings to earth and hope for peace.

I am so grateful to you both, to Plum Village and to your dedication to continue Thay. I really needed to hear how even Thay and Brother Phap Huu must practice diligently walking meditation to care for their feelings. If they can and need to work so hard for inner peace then I guess I can, too. It feels more attainable, somehow, knowing they have strong emotions just like me. 🙏🏿❤️

Thank you so much for this talk 🌱 For me it is very encouraging and healing. Thank you, Brother, particularly for honestly and clearly naming the injustice of racism, the pain and harm racism causes … it needs to be recognised and named if we want to overcome and heal it. You showed us a way of practice for healing 🙏🏿🙏🏻🙏

This conversation was brilliant, insightful, and full of heart. Both of you have so much wisdom to offer. Brother Phap Huu, if is evident you have DEEPLY internalized Thay's teaching. Your responses were fluid and full. You speak with such ease, such breadth and depth of understanding. How proud Thay is of you! You are indeed his continuation.

Thank you for this. It is tough to look at the violence of hate and war with peace and love in my heart! I wonder what am I, a complete fool? But I know with my basic goodness comes an infinite capacity for love and in compassion there is justice too. When I allow some hate in me more follows. My own family fled to Canada from Russia two generations ago. Looking at destruction directly and putting down or releasing the pain of terrible injury requires enormous courage and strength. You both really brought those in this podcast! Thank you!

“What we’re saying is not to kill each other, we want peace”.There is no more beautiful sentence than this for humanity. I’m an Israeli.the attempt for peace between Israel and the Palestinians was unsuccessful. And to this day we are in bloody conflict. In the Hebrew language you greet someone you meet with the word Shalom which means peace. We hope that peace will come soon.

Why can’t we get beyond war! Yes, I ran away from the Pain I felt over all wars, and have gone to altar again and again, And god makes the way out of no way. Brother you have been the soothing balm again. Trauma brings more trauma. Be still and dig into own roots. Don’t name it, feel it. plant new seeds of beauty kindness. It’s springtime, it’ be something of peace. Be the drawing light. Blessings for the wisdom. These past months have been a heart felt time. Deeply connecting to the Self. I’m afraid it’s more silence that will wake us up one by one. Thank you for demonstrating such beautiful. Love and blessings, and thank god you are

Catching up on some of these older podcasts. I know why I am still a struggling layperson to Buddhism and not close to being a master or a Bodhisattva. I don't disagree with the contention that the person who is mean and ugly and doing despicable things like Putin or 45 is full of self-loathing and anger and hatred. OK, fine, be angry and hateful on your own time but don't put your inadequacies onto the world or anyone else. I am at a point where I can understand they are in pain and are suffering but for the love of all that is good and holy, do they have to kill other people to satisfy some horrible attachment to greed or power or money??? How as an engaged Buddhist do you 'look past' that aspect of a person and feel compassion for that? Do you just 'let them go' and act as if there is nothing you can do or let them get away with their horrific actions?? Do you think they'd have a New York second's bit of compassion for anyone else? It's been a year since this terrible war began and I am still struggling with it.
