What was supposed to be a quick off roading day trip with the wife, showing her the magic of the Backway to Crown King, turned into an EPIC journey that pushed the limits of my new Tacoma in stock form.
I dragged the skid plate, hit the rear axle, dropped the truck on the frame and high centered more times than I can count.
It almost became an overland adventure when we high centered and could not get free.
These are what got me free after high centering.

I’ve done that trail 12 times. The last time probably three years ago. I have never seen that rock/water area (6minutes in). I have used lifted Tacoma‘s & Jeeps, also my 2021 Stock Tacoma. Did all bypasses find in stock. I had to build up a couple of rocks for the stair step area. Note to viewers always put your truck in 4low before you need it. This is the reason why. Beautiful area. Thanks for posting.

You probably already know this but to get into 4Lo after 4Hi is engaged, you need to be stopped and in neutral in order to get 4Lo engaged. It doesn't engage when you are in gear.

Getting into 4 low can be tough depending on terrain. You have to be stopped and put it into neutral. Sometimes will need some space to go forward and backward to engage/disengage especially if the surface you are on is comprised of rocks and such that will make it more difficult to lock in, or get out for that matter. It's why you should put it in 4 lo before you get to this point, meaning once you know you will need it and before technical terrain like this where rocks binds up your transmission.

Last Wednesday, 2/19, a Jeep JKU and me in my Jeep TJ came down the backway from CK. You are correct - it is in bad shape in places right now. JKU had 33" tires and I have 31" tires. With the Jeep's great articulation and slow and steady progress we both scraped belly skids only in one place. Articulation was the key to get thru the "creek trail" without any frame hits and that is where Toyota trucks have issues. Bigger tires, lifts, lockers are all band aids to fix the lack of articulation. Wheels in the air do not provide traction. Nice video. Look forward to more of your adventures.

This looks like the backroad to get to our newly purchased country cabin. Took my new 2021 SR exploring around the area and very quickly turned to a trail of tablerock and insanely high grass after a complete washout from the river leaving just mud and rock and a very steep incline. Love that you tried going all stock to begin with, it makes you appreciate all those mods sucking up dollars. I gotta say DOM rock sliders with kickouts are the most important first modification. Cheapest, least invasive, easiest to install and so protective from damage. Tires make a big difference but you get into needing body mount chops, suspension lifts, gears and wheels. Ah, why am I so attracted to expensive hobbies.

Kudos to you and the positive outlook of your wife. I enjoyed watching the capability. As I am preparing to purchase a Tacoma in the next 12 to 18 months, I learned a lot from you and your experience. I may very well go after the factory lift and pursue a set of rock sliders and get a spare set of mud terrain tires to swap out when I do go off-road. I plan on keeping the stock wheels and tires for the 90% of the time I will be on City streets and grass fields. The upfront investment should pay later as cost of labor and materials will likely only go up…

I have 17 dclb trd or, did the Sherman pass trail on stock tires and suspension, was a great challenge but deflating tires helps the grip and screws the clearance but it works as for 4 low my experience is look ahead and engaged it before is too late, Tacomas are very fuzzy with that 4 low and if it gets stuck in 4 low you need to back it up a few feed, happy trails.

My friend lives in Congress AZ, I spent the winter out there a couple times. I lived out there in the 80's and had done the Backway to CK back than in a slightly lifted Toyota pickup, the old solid axle one. Him and I did it several times in a stock Dodge Durango with BFG All Terrains in stock size, (31x10.5) and in my XJ with a 2" lift and 31x10.5's with a Spartan locker in the rear. ScreamingSkullSaloon thanks man. I also own a 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport with a 2” lift and 285 70 r17. Just installed a 2.5” Eibach Pro Truck Lift System in the 2020. It was capable stock but ground clearance is king. Very soon I’ll have 35” tires on the 2020. Gonna be sweet!

I use spend the summers jumping off an 83ft cliff into Lake Pleasant during college. You needed a serious 4x4 or boat to get to that spot.

@AdventureBuilt 2 жыл бұрын
Yea those spots are all closed to 4x4 now. Only by boat. Plus the lake is really low so may not be a good idea. Anyway that is still crazy!!!

I pulled a single axel trailer loaded with camping gear up this way with my 2003 Yota prerunner. I shit you not. Now I didn't care about pinstripe, rock rash etc it's 17 yrs old. But 2wd with locker towing a trailer was achieved. It has 4 in suspension lift with 31" Copper 10ply tires .

good video. just some feedback on general off-roading. lift and bigger tires are not always the answer. driver skill can play a large part in whether or not a vehicle can make a trail obstacle. as its already been said in comments, air down your tires to improve grip, especially in slippery rock conditions. Work on throttle control during crawling as well, try to keep a smooth steady throttle once you pick a line thru the hairy stuff. get out and walk the line if you have to before attempting. I have a stock '17 TRD OR and made the same route without needing assistance (still made use of skid plates though, that's what they are for!). Great point at the end as well, NEVER off road solo unless your rig is setup for it. Even then its not the best idea. Would it have been easier with a lift and bigger tires, sure, but I definitely would not have learned what I have learned about my truck without running stock first.

I've found that being on as flat a surface as possible will help engage 4 low. Nice video man.

Thank you very much and I completely agree. The electronic transfer case hates when there is any pressure on the gears. I have to move to a more flat spot or play with it to switch. Kind of a pain.

Best way to learn how to four wheel is in a stock height rig like that. Couldn't tell you how many times I've run that road in the early 90's testing our builds.

Did this trail in 2017 with a 02 4runner with a sagging rear end, that area at 9:50 mark was terrible. The creek was flowing a lot higher than too.

I did this 30 years ago in my new 4 cylinder Mazda 4x4 - Holy Shit! Never again! I did experience a bonus at the end - saw an albino deer near the top. Four wheel drive trucks do have their limits and it's easy to get into BIG trouble!

So 4lo is a separate gear set in the transfer case, meaning, if it's in 4hi then you attempt to shift to 4lo while in neutral, the gear sets have to be lined up properly to allow it to shift. In a manual transfer case engagement, you wouldn't be able to due to physical interference where an electronic system will attempt to try it, then fail without the benefit of tactile feedback. If this is the case (where you were stuck it appears to be) you typically have to roll either forward or backward a few feet to allow it to engage. It's not a common thing but can occur. It likely happened to you in this spot, because you had load on the drivetrain as you got hung up. This load prevented it from shifting. If it happens again in this type of situation, back up a few feet, release the brake while in neutral and let it move a few feet, then attempt to shift to 4lo. If you're on a hill, shift to neutral, let it roll a few feet with your foot on the brake, then attempt to select 4 lo. That should remedy this issue.

Thank you so much for the information. I was hoping that would have been the root of my issue. I think you are right since I have never been able to duplicate the problem also because I have never been stuck where I could not move a least a foot. Thanks again.

Hey, just liked and subscribed to your channel because you done it with your wife. Awesome. My wife and I will be having the same adventure soon as well. I look forward to seeing what all you do to your rig. In the tough times, why didn't you use crawl control.
@AdventureBuilt

Bong Mike Khmer Tiger thank you very much. Crawl control only works in 4L which it wouldn’t go into. Weird issue that I haven’t been able to duplicate. Hopefully won’t happen again. Great things coming. Cheers.

9:47 the absolute worse location to try and drive up this obstacle. Stay far right or what most everybody does now is the creek side on the far left. Live and learn. I, too, hate that the owner of the mining area has made the rocky section so hard to maneuver through - but it does cut down on the stock vehicles from attempting to go further up the trail and get more damage to the vehicle.

I did it 3-4 times in the '90's in a stock '85 Toyota 4x4 but I think I had 30 inch tires. It looks like it may be a little harder on the Oro Belle Rd portion than it used to be.....and I didn't do any "optional" obstacles

Very nice. I did it in the late 90’s with a wrangler and it was much easier then. I think the side by sides have definitely done a number to it.
