Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Tim Burton's reboot of 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which had a mixed reception on release. Looking back at it now, was it as good as critics say? Or was it just another weird Johnny Depp movie?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 2005
Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers (Deep Roy), Wonka has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

It's probably the closer movie to the original book, of the two movies. The original story is also an allegory for the Garden of Eden, people in the town used to live in a veritable paradise, until someone took knowledge out of the factory, at which point, Willy kicked the humans out and started using an unexplained work force to do everything with methods no one can understand. Also also: If Charlie hadn't bought that last chocolate bar, someone else in town would have, it just might have taken longer since everyone thought the last ticket was already found.

While it's just as messed up, I could've sworn that his house was the only one left when they return near the end of the film, and the others had been demolished. Dang, this movie continues to baffle me 15 years later 😂

"Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is a mouth-watering, epic comeback from the vastly disappointing original. The movie is truly a fantastical rollercoaster of chocolatey goodness. It absolutely blows the 1971 Gene Wilder movie out of the water with its perfect set design, faithfulness to its source and its hit of that Tim Burton twisted magic that we all know and love! For those many of us that were disappointed by the old movie, you're in for a treat with this one! Its got the wondrous trio of Tim burton, Roald Dahl and Johnny Depp and it actually has a nut room making it way more like the book and way more like we'd imagined it! Enjoy this movie, it really is the only true adaption of this beautiful book!" - everyone every year in the google review section

It should be worth noting that Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is actually a book by Roald Dahl that has been adapted to the big screen twice so far. The Willy Wonka one from 1971 is remembered fondly despite it's deviations from the book. This one (directed by Tim Burton) gets a bad rap for being more faithful to the book. It's also mistakenly called a remake of the 1971 film, when in reality it's not. Another interesting factoid, Tim Burton wasn't a fan of the 1971 as he called it too sweet and sappy.
